Video Bulletin Board enables mobile-to-Blu-ray player interaction

After seeing what we saw at CEDIA this year, we knew this innovation was only a hop, skip and a jump away. RCDb and Nortel have teamed up to showcase what they're calling the Video Bulletin Board, which is an interactive application that enables cellphones and Blu-ray players to communicate like never before. With it, you can "send a photo or video from your mobile phone to your own or a friend's BD Live-enabled Blu-ray deck and then, using the remote, activate a click-to-call feature that would automatically have your phone call back the mobile user who sent you the photo." It won't be long before you're ordering pizza from your Blu-ray player and watching outtakes on your handset -- at least, we hope.

SysMaster's Tornado M50 IPTV set-top-box ready for action

To our knowledge, no IPTV provider is offering up SysMaster's Tornado M50 just yet, but judging by the specifications, it shouldn't take long to catch a few eyes. This IPTV set-top-box supports both H.264 and MPEG4 compression along with MPEG2 and WMV, and yes, it will indeed output 1080p via HDMI. Moreover, you'll find support for Dolby 5.1 audio, internet radio, video-on-demand, chat (ICQ, AOL and MSN clients), e-mail and RSS. As if that weren't enough, the unit can also fetch content from a networked computer, and if you're not quite ready for HDMI, there's also component / S-Video outputs to utilize. Alright IPTV carriers -- how long do we have to wait to get our paws around this, and while we're on the subject, how badly will it hurt our wallets?

Tasty AT&T U-Verse features seeing delays

Bad news for those sticking it out with AT&T's U-Verse. According to a slide presented at the company's investor relations webcast, it looks like a number of key features will be delayed -- some well into next year. Among the niceties that subscribers won't see until Q4 of this year are photo integration, consumer VoIP, U-Bar, Yellow Pages, etc. More importantly, however, is the note that the highly anticipated Whole Home DVR won't be ready until Q3 of next year, Caller ID will remain absent until Q4 of 2008, and two HD streams, pair bonding, and an "intelligent network interface device" won't be released until about 12 months from now. Hey, we're all for getting a product right before tossing it out to the masses, but we can imagine the patience of U-Verse customers wearing a tad thin by this point.

MovieBeam testing VOIP

MovieBeam STBWhen MovieBeam was announced I emailed them with concerns about the lack of VOIP support. This among other reasons is why I predicted their failure.

Today I received an email indicating that they were testing VOIP with their STB and an invitation to test the box with no obligation. I had to buy the box, but they waived the activation fee. I ordered one which was shipped FedEx ground and I should receive it in 3 to 5 days.

You can expect a full review to follow.
