Verizon's FiOS TV expansions: July 5, 2008

Being a holiday week here in the USA, we didn't expect too many Verizon installers to be on the clock. Even still, Verizon announced that FiOS TV would be headed to three new locales this week. Two of the three are in New York (Rockville Centre and Northport on Long Island) while the other is in the Bay State (Stoughton). Given that Verizon just boosted the high-definition lineup of its fiber-based programming service, we'd say you folks in these locations have even more reason to be excited. For more details on each announcement, venture on into the links below. We'll see you next week -- here's to hoping your neck of the woods gets covered within the next seven days.

Verizon gets official with 22 new FiOS TV HD channels

Not to beat a dead mule or anything, but Verizon has come clean and admitted that those 20-some-odd HD channels spotted yesterday in Fort Wayne, Indiana are actually supposed to be there. You know, as if to say some engineer didn't accidentally pull a magic lever. Reportedly, 15 new high-def stations are live as we speak in the aforesaid city with seven more due to hit soon, but we've heard reports that the whole lot was flipped on in select areas. Anywho, the carrier has promised to roll the newcomers out to each of its service markets in the near future, though it's anyone's guess as to which locale will claim next. The full list of new HD channels are posted in the read link.

Verizon rolls out 23 new FiOS TV HD channels in Fort Wayne

FiOSRight on schedule, Verizon's FiOS TV gets with the HD program and over doubles its lineup in at least one market, as the lucky devils in Fort Wayne IN get access to 23 new HD channels today. Now usually Verizon likes to roll out national channels nation wide on the same day, but because it is in the middle of shuting off all the analog channels, the lineups are being realigned market by market. Ironically, the new channels seem to be rolling out in the opposite order of the intial Verizon FiOS TV rollout, in which the initial two markets to get the service, are the last to get the upgrade. But even those poor souls in Tampa FL and Keller TX can expect all the HD goodness within the next 60 to 120 days.

Verizon's FiOS TV expansions: June 28, 2008

Another week of expansions are in the books, and it looks like just two new locales got the good word this week from Verizon. A meager 347 households in Poquoson, Virginia are one step closer to having access to FiOS TV (service will be turned on this summer), but Verizon did note that it will "make the service available to all households in Poquoson within three years." Further north, we see the town of Stow, Massachusetts approve a video license for the carrier, though it wasn't stated when residents there would be able to order and enjoy any of that fiber-based programming. We'll see you next week -- here's to hoping your neck of the woods gets covered within the next seven days.

Courts favor AT&T / Verizon, back new video franchising rules

While Verizon and AT&T try to work their FiOS and U-verse services into new areas, the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth circuit in Cincinnati handed them a victory today by ruling that the FCC's new rules setting time limits for local authorities to act on new franchise applications are within its authority. The new ruling at the heart of the debate gives local jurisdictions 90 days to act on apps by providers that already have access to city land to run connections, and 180 days for new entrants to citeis or towns, and bar them from mandating new requirements the FCC finds unreasonable, like building a community swimming pool. While we're big fans of municipal pools, we're also into competition and consumer choice, so if you've been waiting to get TV via telco breathe easy knowing the path just got a little smoother.

Verizon's FiOS TV expansions: June 21, 2008

Verizon's simply expanding too quickly for us to dedicate an entire post to each and every new locale, so from here on out, we'll be rounding these up weekly for those who care to take a peek. This week, the operator stretched its fiber-based TV services to Amherst, Hamburg and Lawrence, New York, six more communities in New Jersey and two more towns (Ashland and Plymouth) in Massachusetts. Furthermore, service is finally available to order in North Andover, MA, and if you're looking for more detail on those Garden State areas, we're talking parts of Bayonne, Perth Amboy, Plainfield, Loch Arbour and Lakewood. For more dirt on each, dive into the read links below. We'll see you next week -- here's to hoping your neck of the woods gets covered within the next seven days.

FTTH deployments: we don't need no stinkin' IPTV

Moto ONTWhen people think of FiOS, they think of super high speed Internet and IPTV, but in actuality FiOS only uses IPTV for VOD and the rest of the channels are distributed the old fashion way; via QAM. We're sure many of you are scratching your head right now and you might be thinking, yeah but eventually FiOS is going IPTV and if Verizon had it to do all over again, surely IPTV would be use now, right? Evidently not, as two new companies have announced a similar GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Networks) deployment to FiOS and guess what, both are using a QAM overlay system just like Verizon. Both D&P Communications and PBT Communications, both realize that QAM can't be beat, thanks to all the current hardware that is available. Sure, IPTV could take over eventually, but at this point we wouldn't dare to guess when.

Verizon pushing FiOS internet to 50Mbps throughout US

With DOCSIS 3.0 (and the corresponding 50Mbps download speeds) being deploying in varying parts of America, Verizon understands what it's up against. Reportedly, the carrier is gearing up to push its 50Mbps FiOS internet -- which is currently only available in a few of its more favored states -- to its entire US footprint. Best of all, we're hearing that all 16 FiOS-enabled states could have access to the service as early as next week, and if you're anxious to sign up, just know that it'll run you $139.95 per month with an annual contract. Thankfully, Verizon is also planning to boost speeds in the basic and middle tiers as well, with the former going from 5Mbps to 10Mbps and the latter going from 15Mbps to 20Mbps. Yeah, we like where this is headed, but we've still got aways to go before we can even sniff Sigbritt Löthberg's connection.

Update: Here's Verizon's official release.

Verizon announces FiOS TV for North Andover, Massachusetts

If it's not New York, it's Massachusetts -- well, with Oregon thrown in every now and then to keep up appearances. You guessed it -- Verizon is lighting up yet another town in the Bay State, this time heading almost to New Hampshire in order to do so. The latest city in MA to approve a cable franchise for Verizon is North Andover, though there's no word on when the outfit will actually start accepting orders. Keep those phones ringing, though.

Verizon gets official with "at least 25" new FiOS TV HD channels

As if it wasn't official enough already, Verizon has just loosed a fresh release confirming that those channels we sniffed out yesterday are indeed coming soon. Officially, the operator is aiming to add over 60 new channels to the FiOS TV lineup "this summer," with "at least 25 in HD." As predicted, it reiterated its intentions to have "up to 150 HD channels" by the year's end, and while we aren't told what regions will see the new content first, it does make mention that it will "roll out the new content, region by region, beginning by early July." Curiously, Verizon asserts that everyone should have 'em within a few months of the initial launch, but the total quantity of available HD channels will be "between 52 and 65, depending on the customer's location." For lots more on what material is just over the horizon, hit the read link and give those eyes a workout.

Damascus next Oregon town to receive FiOS TV

You downtown Portland residents must be cringing right now. Shortly after Happy Valley received word that FiOS TV was on the way, yet another locale on the outskirts of town is getting the same notification. Damascus is one step closer to having yet another option when it comes to programming, as the City Council voted to grant Verizon a cable franchise just this week. At this rate, the entire city of Portland will be surrounded with this stuff in a matter of months, but we all know how Verizon is about infiltrating actual metropolises.

Rumor confirmed: FiOS TV to add 27 new HD channels in July

FiOS pizza boxAlthough rumors from well respected forum posters give us a good reason to get excited, there's nothing quite like getting confirmation from the source. The linked PDF is the FiOS lineup that will be effective next month in Portland and includes 27 new HD channels not currently available to FiOS customers. As you might expect, Verizon had to really shuffle up the lineup -- posted after the jump -- to add this many channels, which now includes just about every HD channel anyone would want; like eight premium movie channels and all the latest cable channels like Sci Fi HD and CNN HD. These new channels will really help propel FiOS from last to first in regards to HD quantity, by over doubling the number of HD channels offered. Unfortunately, there's no word on when the rest of the FiOS customers will have access to these channels, but if you live in a FiOS area, and the analog channels are already gone, there's a good chance they'll come sooner, rather than later. Verizon loops FiOS TV to three more New York communities

Residents of Babylon, Roslyn and Manorhaven can all thank their lucky stars, as Verizon has just selected you all to keep the FiOS TV expansion alive and cranking in New York. All three locales approved agreements giving the carrier the right to offer its fiber-based TV service, with just a final thumbs-up to be given by the New York State Public Service Commission. As is customary with these type announcements, Verizon isn't serving up an estimated launch time frame, but it ought not be too long now.

Taunton, Massachusetts next to receive Verizon's FiOS TV

Another locale in Massachusetts in line to receive FiOS TV? It just can't be! All sarcasm aside, another city in the Bay State is in fact waiting in tense anticipation to have the recently approved Verizon agreement lead to something tangible. Residents of Taunton can thank Mayor Charles Crowley for granting the operator a cable franchise, bringing the total amount of Massachusetts communities where Verizon's FiOS TV is or will soon be available to 71. According to Crowley, "the signing of this agreement will mean that the citizens of Taunton will have a choice for their cable TV needs, and the competitive environment that will exist here in Taunton will ensure that our families will realize competitive prices as well." Now, the unknown wait for service to actually become available begins.

Verizon preparing to enable internet scheduling for FiOS TV

Verizon's hoping to give prospective FiOS TV subscribers yet another reason to come on board with its new FiOS TV Central website. Currently, the newly launched portal "allows customers to use any desktop or laptop computer to review their local TV schedules and information about video-on-demand (VOD) and pay-per-view offerings." All that's well, fine and good, but the real meat is in the future. "Soon," customers will be able to program their DVR from the web, ensuring that you'll never miss a recording should you remember ahead of time and be anywhere near an internet connection. C'mon Verizon, stop teasing!
