Apple TV 3.0.1 update prevents data from 'temporarily disappearing'

Enjoy your Apple TV? Not so fond of your data picking up and vanishing whenever it darn well pleases? Then you'll probably want to force your Apple TV to update to 3.0.1... assuming you've already upgraded it to 3.0, of course. According to the engineers in Cupertino, this update prevents content "from temporarily disappearing until re-synced," and we're guessing that most of you would rather keep your content around if possible. Firmware update brings file conversion, iPhone access to HP's MediaSmart ex485 / ex487

HP's MediaSmart Server ex487 (1.5TB) and ex485 (750GB) both received copious amounts of praise when launched late last year, but considering just how many issues the original two had (the ex470 and ex475), it wouldn't take much to best 'em. Today, HP is issuing its second firmware update of the year for the series, but the first ever for the newest duo -- and make no mistake, it's a big one. PlayTV upgraded with upscaling, more DVR features

The PlayTV add-on for PlayStation 3 may be delayed in Auckland, but if it's already grabbing OTA TV for your system the latest software update brings some much needed new features to the table. Among the new additions, upscaling should bring a sharper picture to HDTVs everywhere, and a new XMB option that takes you direct to TV watching should streamline things appreciably. Panasonic updates firmware for discontinued DMP-BD35 BD player

Just because it's dead and buried doesn't mean the DMP-BD35 isn't lingering in the minds of Panasonic engineers. Don't believe us? Have a look at the latest firmware update to emerge from its labs, dated 3/31/09 and meant for the aforementioned BD35/BD35PC. Of course, the 28MB download doesn't do an awful lot -- it just improves stability for decoding HD audio and all around playback -- but it's definitely not bad for the grand total of $0.00. LG's BD300 gets new firmware update, YouTube access included

LG just gifted its multifaceted BD300 with HD Netflix support in December, and today it's blessing owners with one more goodie: YouTube access. The latest update brings the deck to version BD.8.16.537, and as mentioned, the most notable inclusion is YouTube streaming. Sure, it may not change your life, but it just might make your day. Give it a go and let us know how things look.

Sony issues revised firmware for BDP-S350 Blu-ray player

Sony already gifted its BDP-S350 Blu-ray player with BD-Live functionality last September, but apparently that firmware just isn't good enough any longer. The outfit has just released a newer version that elevates the machine from 010 to 015, and with the update comes "improved BD-Java compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROMs and improved BD-Live performance." The file weighs in at a rather hefty 49.42MB, so hit up the read link if you're interested in getting it started.

HP issues software update for MediaSmart Server

It's been forever and a day since HP issued a MediaSmart Server update, but now -- at long last -- owners can suck down some more new software in order to implement a few minor changes. The HPMSS-1.3-R1 update adds in a Rollback feature, improves image processing performance in HP Photo Webshare, corrects error messages displayed using SSL and TZO certifications and removes unnecessary temperature sensor displays. Give it a go and let us know how things turn out, will ya?

Minor VUDU update automatically selects YouTube HD when available

You know that nifty little "Watch in HD" option that came to YouTube a few months back for high-def content uploaded to the world's most well known video sharing portal? After a minor update to your VUDU box -- which hit the tubes this past Friday -- your movie set-top-box should now select that option automatically when viewing HD YouTube material. Hey, we told you it was minor, but satisfactory nonetheless.

SlingCatcher updates reportedly on the way, cheers heard all over

Sling Media's SlingCatcher has been hampered since release due to a few software limitations, but according to ZatzNotFunny, project manager Matthew Feinstein has confirmed that both Slingbox PRO-HD high-def / networked drive streaming are on the way sometime this quarter. Supposedly, resolutions are expected to get bumped from 640 x 480 to 1,280 x 540, with the ultimate goal of hitting 1,920 x 1,080. We're also told that UPnP support could be in the cards, and that OS X, SlingSync and SlingProjector software is in development. Mmm, tasty.

Samsung issues v2.3 firmware update for BD-P2500 / BD-P2550 Blu-ray players

Merely weeks after Samsung rolled out its v2.1 firmware update to enable HD Netflix streaming on the BD-P2500 / BD-P2550 Blu-ray players, in flies an update just before the dawn of 2009. As of right now, users can surf on over (courtesy of the read links provided below) in order to download version 2.3, which officially acts to "improve playback compatibility of some movie titles." Fire up the download and give it a go, and feel free to report back with any other, unnamed changes that you discover.

LG's BD300 Blu-ray gets HD Netflix-enabling firmware update

First came Samsung's duo, then came the TiVo. Now, LG's BD300 is taking its turn, just as we were promised it would. Available now, the vBD8.11.480 firmware update will take your deck to the next level by solving the following symptom: "Netflix HD streaming is not supported." The update is also said to "fix the menu flickering when RMC key is served on the BD-Live menu," so yeah, there's that. Get that update going and report back, will you? Oh, and keep a close eye on quality -- we hear it's been wonky of late.

Memorex issues firmware update for MVBD-2510 Blu-ray player

Memorex isn't spilling any details, but lo and behold, it has pumped out a version C firmware for its low-end MVBD-2510 Blu-ray player. 'Course, the player has only been out for a couple of months now, but it is apparently already in need of 23.1MB of refreshing. Oh, and don't bother checking for a changelog in the download hosted in the read link -- you'll just end up sorely disappointed. So, MVBD-2510 owners, we're all relying on you to hook your player up and report back with pluses and minuses. Who's down?

Oppo coughs up BDP-83 universal Blu-ray player details

Lookie, lookie -- we just might have a winner on our hands here. While Denon just announced the world's first universal Blu-ray player at $3,800, the highly respected Oppo is looking to trump said offering with a low-cost version of its own. The heretofore elusive BDP-83 has finally been detailed, as consumers who signed up to know more have received an email (posted in full after the break) with oodles of delicious information. For starters, the player will indeed be fully universal -- a Profile 2.0 BD deck with SACD, DVD and DVD-Audio support -- and for SACD playback, it will support DSD over HDMI and DSD-to-analog without any PCM conversion. As of now, the unit is currently undergoing "an extensive and thorough beta test program," and Oppo is considering opening up an "Early Adoption Program" later this month to give a limited number to mere mortals for feedback. Obviously, there's no finalized date for release, but the anticipated price will hover between $499 and $599.

Escient rolls out Vision version 1.1 software

If you're lucky enough to own an Escient digital media system, then the company has a new version 1.1 of its Vision software ready for your hot hands. The update is free (you did shell out some long green for the Escient system, remember) for owners of Vision VS and VC gear, and promises a more responsive UI, stability and improved video quality -- always good things for your oh-so-connected casa. Also making the cut is 2-way control for Vision Movies, Music, Rhapsody, Photos and the front panel disc drive (CD or DVD only), so your high end Crestron, Marantz RC9001, Philips Pronto and UEI remote controls and multi-room distribution gadgets get along nice and friendly-like with the Escient hardware.

Samsung's BD-P1500 gets firmware update, Netflix streaming not included

Man, we're beginning to sound like a broken record when referring to BD-P1500 firmware updates. Back in June, we were miffed when a Profile 2.0-less update hit; if you'll recall, it was months later before BD-Live capabilities were added. Today, we've seen the deck's more flamboyant siblings receive updates that bring along the highly anticipated HD Netflix stream, yet the corresponding v2.1 BD-P1500 upgrade offers only "improved playback compatibility of some movie titles." 'Course, we never heard specifically that said feature was destined for this player, but wouldn't it be nice? Yes, yes it would.
