Hands-on and unboxing: JVC Everio HD40 camcorder

We got a chance to peek JVC's latest line of Everio camcorders in a controlled environment a few weeks back, but we finally managed to snag a retail HD40 (that's the flagship model in this series) and take it off to our own special corner. Of course, we tackled the first things first: unboxing and hands-on. Early impressions are that the unit is surprisingly light, though it's on the bulky side. Granted, there is 120GB of storage in there, so it may be a fair trade off for some. We're letting the battery charge up and plan to shoot some video with it over the weekend; we'll be writing up a full review here shortly. 'Til then, enjoy the gallery below (complete with comparison shots with the impressive Samsung SC-HMX20C).

Pioneer's 60-inch KURO PDP-LX6090 plasma gets unboxed

Just in case you didn't get a close enough look at Pioneer's next-gen KUROs earlier this year, the folks over at CNET UK managed to bring home a 60-inch PDP-LX6090 and snap a few pics. As expected, onlookers were thoroughly wowed after ripping it from the box and firing it up, with a tag line dubbing it "big, black and beautiful." See what they mean in the read link below.

The Samsung BD-P1500 unboxed

It's been two years since we got a chance to play with the first Blu-ray player which was also a Samsung and here we are with the fourth generation player at our disposal. Right up front we like the way it looks, but there's no doubt this is a different class of machine from the previous generations as a few features are obviously missing like discrete analog outs. But features aside, we plan to run this thing through the paces, but for now click through for a up close look at Samsung's latest Blu-ray player.

Amazon Unbox content going HD on TiVo

We had a pretty good feeling this would go down eventually, but we certainly didn't see a confirmation (of sorts, anyway) coming this soon. Jim Denney, VP of product marketing at TiVo, has been quoted as saying that although the current version of Amazon Unbox can't process high-definition content, TiVo and Amazon will jointly announce HD capabilities "in the not too distant future." Granted, the content -- whenever it does actually arrive -- will only be accessible by "cable subscribers" with adequate bandwidth, but it's not like that's any sort of surprise. Sadly, details beyond what you've seen here were left out, but at least you can sleep soundly tonight knowing that high-def Unbox material is most certainly on the horizon.

Sony TG3E: world's smallest 1080i camcorder unboxed, sized-up with 720p champ

Get a load of what just arrived at the doorstep of our European HQ -- the world's smallest 1080i camcorder, Sony's TG3E. Otherwise known as the TG1 in the US, this pup is small and sturdy and definitely looks the part of a Full HD (as it's defined for camcorders) 1080i shooter. Hell, Sony somehow managed to turn that boxy design into something sexy to hold. However, Sanyo's 720p Xacti DMX-HD700 (in red) still trumps the TG3E in size and weight. Unfortunately, it gives up significant lines of resolution in the process and uses inferior materials to boot. We'll be back later with a full review of this pup as soon as we find a nice, tropical island which can pamper this beast in the luxury a $900 camcorder deserves. So until then, check the gallery over at Classic and call out in the comments with any questions you'd like us to tackle.

Pioneer BDP-95FD Elite Blu-ray player unboxed

There are some days when we just can't believe we get paid to work for Engadget -- and a day when a Pioneer Elite BDP-95FD Blu-ray player and VSX-94TXH Audio/Video Receiver show up at our labs, is most definitely one of those days. Pioneer really knows how to make some nice looking hardware and as you hold them, there's no doubt you have a premium product in your hands. Our initial impressions of both components have us very impressed and while we slave away putting this high-end hardware through the paces, you'll have to wait for our full review. So enjoy the pics and if you think of any questions about this new hardware, drop 'em in the comments and we'll do our best to report back.

Samsung BD-UP5000 gets unboxed

Samsung BD-UP5000
Samsung's BD-UP5000 showed up at our door today for a proper review and just like we love to do, we're bringing the unboxing experience to you in advanced of the full review. We'll be running this thing through the ringer in the next few weeks, but our early impressions are good -- despite the lack of next-gen audio codec support. If you have any tests you'd like performed, now's your chance to be heard, otherwise hold tight while we play work diligently.

VUDU set-top-box gets proper unboxing

We know, the VUDU set-top-box has been covered up and down around here, and while you've already taken a look at the thing from all angles, there's just nothing like a proper unboxing on the world's unofficial unboxing day. All done with your presents? Hop on over to the read link and check out Mr. Zatz cracking open one of his own.

Mojo's original programming heads over to Amazon Unbox

Hot on the heels of Mojo's decision to add more finance-based programming to its 2008 lineup comes word that the network's original content will be made available through Amazon Unbox. Apparently, the two outfits worked things out so that Unbox users can now get ahold of After Hours with Daniel, Three Sheets, King of Miami, Dr. Danger, Uncorked with Billy Merritt and Wall Street Warriors, and you can expect Pressure Cook and Test Drive to be added soon. Per usual, each episode is $1.99, and they all look to be live right now for those interested.

LG's BH100 Super Multi Player unboxed

Well this is more like it. After waiting forever between the initial announcement and first retail availability of the first wave of HD disc devices, LG's BH100 really rocketed to the shelves, and has just participated in its first unboxing (that we've heard of) mere weeks after the announcement at CES. We're a little disconcerted by that big front-and-center dent on the box, but the unit itself looks just dandy, and gadgetaholic promises a full review in the coming days. But that's not what you're here for, you just wanted to see this little guy ripped from his Styrofoam cocoon and flap his little Red and Blue wings, so hit the read link for the whole event. Fly, BH100, fly.
