AVD plays matchmaker, brings Sonos and Pronto together

The Sonos music system consistently gets high marks for its easy-to-use Sonos Controller remote. But folks who want to control their whole home with a single device can't be bothered by another remote, and they've probably got some money to spend to fix the problem. Make way for the enterprising folks at AVD Australia and QualiFi, who have come up with 2-way communication between Sonos and a Philips Pronto TSU9600 or Marantz RC9001 remote, so you can ditch that now-obsolete $400 Sonos Controller. Up to 8 Sonos areas can be controlled by up to 8 remotes, so yeah, there's room to grow. All this convenience should be available this month, starting at AUD $695 (US $540) for a single remote and zone (Sonos and remote not included).

Hands-on with Philips' TSU line of remote controls

Considering that the bulk of Philips' gear was of the remote control variety, we figured it best to take a closer look at what all the firm was offering. The fellow up there on the right was spotted at last year's CEDIA, but the two siblings beside it are reportedly going to land sometime in the next few months. From left to right, you'll see the TSU9200, TSU9400, and the tried and true TSU9600, all which were designed to make controlling your life from the couch a bit more plausible. Neither of the newbies were particularly comfortable to hold, but when you can flip on / off tunes, switch off the lights, and fire up your TiVo with a simple button press, we guess we can deal.

Marantz's RC9001 touchscreen remote with WiFi extender

We saw a variation of this Philips TSU9600 at CES. Still, it's nice to see Marantz get official with their own VGA touchscreen remote: the RC9001. Like Philips' model, we expect this Marantz model to integrate with Escient Fireball media servers and Lutron RadioRa lighting controls for full multi-room control. It brings along an option for an RX9001 WiFi extender or RX8001 serial extender too -- right, just like Philips. The only difference appears to be the choice of UI which of course, can make all the difference in the world. Expect the Marantz RC9001 to ship sometime mid-September for right around $1,000.
