As Auntie Beeb forges ahead in her quest to conquer global markets, we've now found that four new BBC networks will be made available in Sweden. Starting this week, Swedes will be able to tune into BBC Entertainment, BBC Knowledge, BBC Lifestyle, as well as a HD channel, as the stations have been signed on to operators Canal Digital, Com Hem, Telia and Tele2. If you can only get one HD channel to start your month, a high-def BBC ain't a bad one to get.

Viasat isn't giving HD consumers any additional high-def scraps to fight over here, but at least the "premium" customers who are shelling out for that ViasatPlus HD service will be able to justify it a tad more. A new video-on-demand service (predictably named ViasatOnDemand) will utilize a customer's broadband internet connection to pull down movies and other programs to the hard drive of their DVR on demand. Sweden will become the first country to take advantage when it launches there this week, while Norway / Denmark get it next week and Finland later this year. Each movie that's currently available on premium channel TV1000 will be available at no extra charge, while other flicks / series will be priced between SEK19 ($2.47) and SEK49 ($6.25) per title.

Granted, HD DVD didn't exactly have a foothold on the Swedish market to begin with, but the red camp is still losing two firms that it certainly wouldn't mind having around. Reportedly, both SF and Scanbox have decided to follow in Warner's footsteps and distribute their high-definition films on Blu-ray alone. As for the near future, there doesn't seem to be a concrete date for when SF will roll out its films in Blu, but purportedly, Scanbox will get things going as early as April.

Don't look now, but Viasat Broadcasting has just launched its first high-definition offerings (including two Viasat-branded premium HDTV channels, TV1000 HD and Viasat Sport HD) on its Nordic satellite pay-TV platform. Reportedly, TV1000 HD and National Geographic HD will be available in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland, while Viasat Sport HD makes its debut in Sweden, Norway and Finland; as for Danish subscribers, they'll have access to TV2 Sport HD. Unfortunately, fetching said programming won't come cheap, as it'll demand SEK/NOK/DKK 99 per month (between $15 and $20) in addition to the currently undisclosed HD set-top-box upgrade cost. Speaking of which, two STBs will initially be available: a Viasat Plus HD PVR box from Pace and a standard Viasat HD box made by Samsung, both of which use NDS middleware / content security and support 720p / 1080i. And we thought we were starved for HD...

Apparently even the HD companies believe it's truly better to give than to receive, as we've seen Poland, Spain, and the ole US of A receive new HD content in recent weeks. Next in line is, well, a little more of Europe, but it'll be "the first HD content" delivered to needy consumers in the Baltic region. NonStop Television has reportedly struck a deal with Estonian telecoms and IT provider Elion to make VOOM HD available on the firm's IPTV platform just a month after it launched in Scandinavia on Canal Digital. The company stated that Elion would be "the first HDTV provider in Estonia," but hopefully not the last. So for you folks stuck up in the northern sects of Europe, take heart, as a taste of HD is coming to cable and IPTV in your neck of the woods this February.
