Nintendo launches TV Guide Channel in Japan, enables Wiimote to control TV

For Wii owners not located in Japan, get ready to weep. Why? Because users in the aforementioned nation now have access to an incredibly fascinating new channel and you, well, don't. Details on the TV Guide Channel are still a bit fuzzy (read: lost in machine translation), but based on what we've pieced together, users can surf through shows on the EPG, share their favorites with friends, see how popular a program is (using demographic data, too) and even receive an e-mail / SMS alert 30 minutes prior to a flagged show's start time. Best of all, however, is the ability to use your Wiimote as a television remote. You heard right -- owners can use their Wii controller (via the sensor bar) to dictate volume, switch channels and flip back and forth between their shows and the TV Guide Channel. Now, how long must the rest of the free world wait? Check out the gallery over on Classic for a few more looks at what you're (probably) missing out on.

HDTV Listings for October 20, 2006

What we're watching: No baseball tonight, but Baseball Tonight is airing its Best of Web Gem Awards for this year on ESPN2-HD. The usual list of shows is on, but we'll probably take a look at Women's Roller Derby on HDNet.

What we're watching: Don't check your calendars, yes, it is Friday and yes, that is Monday Night Football tonight on ESPN. We're not so sure how this move from ABC is going to go when they can't even get the day right, but we'll check out the Steelers and the Eagles anyway. An oldie but goodie episode of Rides featuring Rod Millen and Chip Foose teaming up to customize a Lexus is also on tonight, along with Saving Private Ryan on Cinemax and a late night thriller in Night of the Living Dead.

What show do you wish was in HD?

High definition programming is grow rapidly; It has almost doubled in the last year. Still there are shows and channels that we wish were available in HD. Like Sci-Fi. They have great original shows like Battlestar Galactica and all those Stargate series. Plus, that new Ghosthunters show would be great in high-def. Oh and then there is F/X. Who wouldn't want to see The Shield and Rescue Me in HD? Oh and don't forget about Nip/Tuck. It is ashame that these are some of the best shows on TV and they aren't in HD.

What shows/channels would you like to see in HD?

HDTV Listings for May 8, 2006

David BlaineWhat we're watching: Prison Break and 24 are on and in action tonight, notable because they might finally break out of prison (how can  a show called Prison Break not actually have a break out yet? That would be as though they called Lost "Found") and on 24 the President may shoot down a jet just to kill Jack Bauer (impossible).

On TNT we have second round action kicking off between the Clippers/Suns and Nets/Heat so you know what you're getting there. The X-factor tonight is street magician/stuntman/demonically possessed David Blaine's attempt to break the world record for holding his breath underwater on ABC. We'll go out on a limb and say there's some sort of trick to it.

Debra Messing - The
wedding dateWhat we're watching: Heat vs. Pistons of course, the premiere Eastern conference rivalry plays out once again as time ticks down towards the playoffs. The Heat are shorthanded with Jason Williams and James Posey injured, so Dwyane Wade and Shaq will have to pick up the slack at 8 p.m. on TNT. Also, the game is at Miami, so crowd watching in high definition is highly recommended.

Elsewhere, NBC has committed the terrible sin of replacing The Office with Teachers at 9:30 p.m. so don't be fooled. Instead, if you didn't get enough Debra Messing during Will & Grace, switch over to HBO and check out The Wedding Date.
