Audio Karma Fest going down in Livonia, MI this weekend

Audio Karma Fest 2009 logo
If you don't have plans for this weekend yet and you're in the neighborhood of Livonia, MI, maybe pencil in some time to check out Audio Karma Fest. It sounds like it's going to be quite the playground for audio- and videophiles, with demos of the really expensive stuff from some high-end brands. For example, McIntosh will be showing off the limited-run Classic System and unveiling its MR88 AM/FM/XM/HD tuner. Paired up with McIntosh equipment will be some high-ticket speakers from sister company Snell; and if you want to boost your speaker design chops, you can't do a whole lot better than sitting in on a Joseph D'Appolito seminar. Also getting the "for your eyes only" treatment is the US unveiling of the Marantz UD9004 universal Blu-ray deck. Hit the links for more detailed info on what vendors are bringing to the party; playground admission is $25.

Live at CEDIA 2008: bring on the pixels

Now that IFA is behind us, the consumer electronics world is turning its attention to Denver, Colorado to see what CEDIA has to offer. We're expecting hordes of new HDTVs, projectors, speakers, AV receivers and even THX-certified soundproof doors (yes, really), but it never fails that at least something on the show floor completely takes us by surprise. We've touched down here in the Mile High City to bring you up-to-the-minute updates, and for the most obsessive coverage, be sure to point your browsers to Engadget HD for the next few days.

CEDIA 2007 roundup

CEDIA 2007 was bigger, louder and more pixelated than ever, and as always, we were live from the Mile High city to bring you (just about) everything the show had to offer. In case you blinked along the way, here's a rundown of our coverage, and don't forget to check out the rest after the break:

Toshiba's 55-inch SED TV to be a no-show at CES

If you had high hopes of seeing Toshiba's "soon-to-be-released" SED TV showcased at CES in just a few weeks, well, you can probably already read the writing on the wall. Unsurprisingly, the set has seemingly hit another snag on its journey to retail reality, as Toshiba has announced that "technical issues" will keep the 55-inch surface conduction electron emitter display from being present at the show. While another delay hasn't exactly been confirmed, in all likelihood there's yet another one behind the scenes, and it could be due to the tension between Canon (Toshiba's partner) and Nano-Proprietary. Reportedly, the two firms are in "closed-door settlement talks" over licensed technology to be used on SED TVs, and the matters at hand could be forcing Toshiba's hand to hold back at CES. Nevertheless, it's a shame we won't be getting up close and personal with the mystical display in just a few weeks, but Toshiba feels that the issue(s) should be "resolved soon," and insinuated that we'd see a demo here in the States before too long.

What we're watching: Tonight we say goodbye to the ill-fated Windfall, disappearing forever after one disappointing season on NBC. College Football season is here and ESPN brings us SEC action featuring South Carolina vs. Mississippi State. Two for the Money is on HBO-HD while Quiz Show airs on Showtime-HD.

Update: Occasio has informed us below that MHD is airing the VMAs in HD tonight, so be sure to check that out, right about...now

What we're watching: What is this? New programming? Yes sir, Bones and Justice are all new on Fox tonight and you won't have to make any excuses with us for watching. Bones returns from last season while Justice is a new series. The three big HBO season finales make an encore appearance tonight in case you missed Deadwood, Lucky Louie and Entourage. Transporter 2 makes an appearance on Cinemax, and as commenters have pointed out, the US Open is running all day on Universal HD.

What we're watching: Monday Night Football -- on a Monday this time -- showcases the return of Carson Palmer and the Bengals after last season's torn ACL and season-ending loss to the Steelers as they face Brett Fav-ruh and the Packers. Prison Break and Vanished have their fall seasons off and running as they debut their second episodes, joining Saved and The Closer as Monday regulars.

What we're watching: More football, we'll get an early look at Larry Johnson running behind a revamped Chiefs offensive line against the Giants before our fantasy football drafts, remember even Reggie Bush thinks he should go #1. We've also got another lame duck episode of Windfall, while one of our favorite episodes of Discovery Channel's Blue Realm, The Giants of San Benedicto features great HD scenes of giant manta rays.

'Jeopardy!' and 'Wheel of Fortune' going high-def in September

Some shows are just made for high-def especially when you consider the $4 million King World Productions and Sony Pictures Television are spending to enhance the sets of Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune. The two game shows are in the midst of a massive makeover before they both launch in high-def on September 11. That $4 million went to widen the sets, add more color to make that HD just 'pop,' and replace the Jeopardy monitor wall with a seamless projection system. This will make 'em the first game shows to go high-def and now all we need is for the Price is Right to go high-def. No, we aren't thinking about Bob Barker's beauties, but what's better then Plinko in high-def?

HDTV Listings for July 30, 2006

What we're watching: It's a summer Sunday you know the HD drill by now, network reruns, Deadwood followed by comedies on HBO, Brotherhood on Showtime, Mojo lineup on INHD. Still, we never miss a chance to check out Clint Eastwood as The Man With No Name so A Fistful of Dollars on HDNet is definitely worth a look.

HDTV Listings for July 19, 2006

What we're watching: Stephen King's Nightmares & Dreamscapes is back for the second of it's four-week run on TNT. Meanwhile ABC's The One: Making a Music Star apparently is in HD, even though their site does not list it that way, just like Kyle XY and unlike So You Think You Can Dance?. On ESPN the mighty Detroit Tigers face their division rival White Sox again while on Showtime you can check out Jet Li in Black Mask.

Why doesn't ABC want to tell the world their shows are in high-def? There's no shame in that.

HDTV Listings for July 9, 2006

What we're watching: We've got the usual HBO shows for a Sunday night lineup but tonight you may want to flip over to Showtime for an all new show, Brotherhood. The basis for the story are two brothers, one a politician and one a career criminal living in a small Rhode Island community. If you need more convincing you can check out a review of tonight's episode on TV Squad (spoilers).

HDTV Listings for July 3, 2006

What we're watching: Saved and The Closer check in to their usual Monday night positions, but also tonight is a Discovery HD Theater all new show, Best Ranger 2006. More than two dozen two-man Army Ranger teams competed for 60 straight hours to see who is the best. With events like an unknown-distance run blind weapons assembly/disassembly, this pretty much blows away the Olympics.

Otherwise, ESPN brings us Atlanta vs. St. Louis in baseball, while HD DVD owners can check Constantine on Cinemax and compare quality.

HDTV Listings for June 23, 2006

What we're watching: Nothing on tonight that you haven't probably seen already. 24 is still about Jack Bauer slicing and dicing terrorists, Jennifer Love Hewitt is still talking to dead people on Ghost Whisperer, and models are still beating each other senseless on Perfect 10: Model Boxing.

Yup, just your average Friday in the summertime.

HDTV Listings for June 22, 2006

What we're watching: Thursdays in the summertime are a dry HD night. ABC and Fox don't even make an effort, while CBS, UPN and WB only show reruns. There's another new episode of Windfall on, but not much else other than baseball, with games on ESPN and INHD.

Looks like a night of Earl and The Office, we'll pull some day-old pizza out of the fridge to celebrate.
