Proton's 42- and 47-inch Premier LCD HDTVs get official

Proton's no stranger to taking the wraps off new products in lively Las Vegas, and this year it looks like a few 1080p gems will be showing their stuff alongside the LED-backlit versions we've been hearing about. Dubbed the first two sets in the company's "premier" lineup, the 42-inch P42D5 and 47-inch P47D5 both sport a newly designed aluminum enclosure, 176-degree viewing angle, and a "Puriti" processing engine that purportedly helps to eliminate jaggies among other color enhancements. Aside from the full blown 1080p support, built-in digital / analog tuners, PIP, and HDMI inputs on both sets, the P47D5 also features a 1200:1 contrast ratio, 500 cd/m2 brightness, 8-millisecond response time, and a pair of integrated 5-watt speakers. Both sets should be on display at next month's CES, and while the 42-incher will sell for $1,999, the flagship 47-inch model will demand $2,999.

Proton bringing LED backlit LCDs to CES 2007

Even though Toshiba's SED technology will be a no show at CES this year, Proton let us know that its LED backlit LCDs will be on display. The last time we saw these HDTVs (the 42-inch 1080p P42L1 and 32-inch 720p P32L1) at Computex they were expected to hit this year but now are slated for a second quarter 2007 release. In case you've forgotten during the long wait for this technology to reach reasonable prices, LED backlighting (like SED) promises more accurate color reproduction than current CCFL-based LCDs.
We'll have to wait until next year to see which one actually delivers.

Puriti 1080p 42- and 47-inch LCDs by Proton

CEDIA is right around the corner (September 14-17) and companies just can't wait to announce their new AV products. Proton has released the deets of their newest 42- and 47-inch 1080p LCDs just a bit early and let us tell you, we are going to look for these at the expo for sure. Their specs are rather nice with a 1,200:1 contrast ratio, a brightness of 500 nits, and a 6.5 millisecond response time. These sets might not come from a major player in the LCD industry, but don't rule it out as a quality product. Who would have guessed that Westinghouse would be considered a quality TV a few years ago? There isn't any announced price or availability yet, but we are sure that info will become available soon. Once we get an update on these Purtiti LCDs, we will pass it onto you.

UPDATE - It turns out that they did indicate via the press release the the 47- and 42-inch sets are currently available for $3,999 and $2,499.

Computex '06: LED backlit LCDs by Proton

Proton is showing off what seems to be the first production LED based LCD at Computex '06. They have plans to produce a 32 and 42-inch LCD in the third quarter of this year - and let us tell you, we can't wait to see 'em. These displays are impressive with the 42-inch have a 1080p resolution with a contrast ratio of 1,200:1. The little brother sports a resolution of 1,366x768 and a contrast ratio of 1,000:1. These are rather nice looking HDTVs but to be honest we are kind of afraid of what the price is going to be. Whenever we find out though, we will let you know.

1080p LCD from Proton at CES

Proton 55-inch LCDWill there be anything left to show at CES or will everybody keep spilling the beans these last few days before the big event? Proton is the latest to have loose lips as the lift the veil on their new LCD line . The 32- and 37-inch surprises will cover the 480p, 720p and 1080i folks while the big boys step it up a notch to appease the 1080p crowd. The higher res sets are sized at 42-, 47- and 55-inches.

Watch for the three smallest sizes in the first quarter of 2006 with the 47- and 55-inch displays hitting shelves in the second quarter. We'll be watching for any sets at the show that weren't actually pre-announced.
