Reminder: TWC's Start Over going live in New York / New Jersey

Something actually launching on the very day it was supposed to? Say it ain't so! According to the New York Post, Time Warner Cable actually is rolling out its Start Over feature -- which gives users a chance to "restart a show they may have missed from the beginning with the press of a button" -- in areas of New York / New Jersey on July 1st. Reportedly, it'll hit HD subscribers first in Staten Island, with other systems to follow shortly. It should be noted, however, that the feature will only be offered "up to one minute before the program is over, and as part of an agreement between Time Warner and broadcasters, unlike a DVR, viewers cannot fast forward through commercials." Give it a go here in a few hours and let us know how it turns out. [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]

Verizon's FiOS TV expansions: June 21, 2008

Verizon's simply expanding too quickly for us to dedicate an entire post to each and every new locale, so from here on out, we'll be rounding these up weekly for those who care to take a peek. This week, the operator stretched its fiber-based TV services to Amherst, Hamburg and Lawrence, New York, six more communities in New Jersey and two more towns (Ashland and Plymouth) in Massachusetts. Furthermore, service is finally available to order in North Andover, MA, and if you're looking for more detail on those Garden State areas, we're talking parts of Bayonne, Perth Amboy, Plainfield, Loch Arbour and Lakewood. For more dirt on each, dive into the read links below. We'll see you next week -- here's to hoping your neck of the woods gets covered within the next seven days.

Comcast adds three HD channels in Jersey Shore

Yep, Comcast has added in three new HD nets along the New Jersey shore, and we're giving you exactly one guess as to which three we're talking about. ABC Family HD (195), Disney HD (239) and Science HD (194) were just added in Ocean and Monmouth counties (you did get that correct, right?), and we have a sneaking suspicion they'll be reaching other systems very, very shortly. Where will they end up next? Stay tuned, it's sure to be a thriller.

[Thanks, Joe]

TWC's New York / New Jersey HD explosion seen a bit early

Hard to curb your enthusiasm, isn't it? For Time Warner Cable customers situated in New York / New Jersey, tomorrow's the big day. Er, maybe today is the big day. According to a Brooklyn resident who just so happened to see what his EyeTV could capture via Clear QAM tonight, NY1 HD (along with a host of others) were spotted as being available. 'Course, nothing has been updated in the EPG just yet, but rest assured, the whole gang should be showing up very soon indeed. [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]

Verizon spreads FiOS TV to more of New Jersey

Barely three months after Verizon spread the FiOS TV love to more of the Garden State, the carrier has just announced that even more folks in New Jersey can sign up and grab hold of its fiber-based TV service. The news comes hot on the heels of Comcast's recent HD onslaught in both North and South Jersey, and while a specific number of households isn't mentioned, we are told that parts of Mount Holly, Westampton, Helmetta, Jamesburg, Spotswood and Pallisades Park now have access. It's good to have choices, isn't it?

South Jersey getting ten new HD channels on Comcast

Despite our disbelief, the Comcast HD train is still on a roll, this time making its way up to South Jersey. While other locales have been grinning ear-to-ear after getting just a handful of newcomers, folks in the lower part of New Jersey can get set to receive ten fresh ones -- on a Saturday, no less. Effective April 12th, customers in the area can find HGTV HD, Discovery HD, TLC HD, Food Network HD, History HD, Sci-Fi HD, CNN HD, Animal Planet HD, USA HD and AMC HD on their EPG. Also of note, AMC, TCM, History Channel, Cartoon Network and Inspiration will be moving to digital, and "up to 50 channels" could be repositioned in the shuffle. It's time to let go of all that pent-up envy felt for your northerly neighbors, alright?

[Thanks, Carlos]

Time Warner Cable drops HD bombshell on New York / New Jersey

Lookee here, it's all coming true. The bits we heard about a massive HD rollout coming to Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, NY (not to mention New Jersey) are now being confirmed by Time Warner Cable. On April 30th, the three previously highlighted areas will have access to 50 HD channels, while those very stations will be available to all digital subscribers in Manhattan (!!!), New Jersey, the Hudson Valley region and Mt. Vernon "later this year." Additionally, TWC is gearing up to add over 250 HD VOD options, launch Enhanced HDTV (which includes Start Over) and position itself "to carry 100 high-definition channels" in NY and NJ by the close of 2008. Progress is a wonderful thing, innit? Check the full list of upcoming HD channels in the read link. [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]

Verizon planning 2009 New Jersey FiOS rollout in Atlantic / Cape May counties

Verizon already services quite a chunk of New Jersey, but in a recent writeup explaining how cabling was currently being laid to bring FiOS TV to more of southern NJ (Cumberland county, in particular), we noticed that Vineland and Bridgeton weren't the only nearby regions with fiber in their future. According to Dennis Bone, president of Verizon New Jersey, FiOS should also be rolled out in "Atlantic and Cape May counties, beginning in Middle Township, by 2009." If all goes well, the company hopes to have around 300 communities across the state with access to at least FiOS internet, if not FiOS TV, by the end of 2008. Still, one has to wonder when the service will start moving out from the same ole footprint.

Comcast adds SNY HD for North Jersey customers

In what has clearly become a breakthrough year for baseball in HD, North Jersey based Mets and Jets fans can rejoice as Comcast is adding SportsNet New York HD just as we expected. Coming to channel 198 for Union, Plainfield, Meadowlands, Jersey City and Northwest-based customers today, and in other markets Thursday, viewers will get every 2008 Mets game in high definition. Time Warner Cable, Cablevision, RCN, DISH Network and DirecTV customers who already had the channel are now encouraged to find other things to fuel their air of superiority, we recommend noting your remarkably luxurious hair, your kid's middle school honor student status, or an above average number of Facebook friends.

Nine HD newcomers headed to Northern New Jersey

Rest easy, Northern New Jersey residents, as the nine HD channels mentioned late last month are coming your way, too. According to a new internal memo from Comcast, folks up in the Union, NJ region will see Discovery HD (224), Food Network HD (216), HGTV HD (213), A&E HD (211), History Channel HD (217), Sci-Fi HD (226), USA HD (222) and Animal Planet HD (230) added to their lineup, but they'll be waiting until May 15th to get the goods. Also, we're hearing that SportsNet NY HD (SNY HD) will be arriving on March 25th (similar to Ocean County), and it seems that Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network and History Channel are all being relocated and going digital only. For what its worth, users in the area are surmising that the changes will include a trio of HD channels on a single QAM, which could lead to less-than-impressive results when May rolls around.

[Thanks, Sriram]

More details on Comcast changes / additions in New Jersey

As February closed, we got word that Comcast users in unspecified parts of New Jersey would be getting nine new HD channels on March 27th. Now, we're finally getting a touch more information on the whole ordeal. Reportedly, Comcast is gearing up to "reorganize its channel lineups in Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties" in order to compress six channel lineups in southern New Jersey into two and to bring AMC, Cartoon Network, The History Channel and Turner Movie Classics to the all-digital side on April 12th. As for Ocean County, Cartoon Network, The History Channel and Philadelphia broadcasters KYW-3 (CBS) and WPHL-17 will make the leap to digital. For a breakdown of which high-definition channels are being added in which locales, head on past the break.

HD VOD atop list of changes coming to TWC New York / New Jersey

Just days after we learned of a few channel transformations coming up in the TWC New York / New Jersey markets, along comes word that quite a few other alterations are in the pipeline. For starters, HD VOD is slated to launch on May 15th in Staten Island (which currently has an "all digital" system), and other markets (Brooklyn / Queens, Manhattan, Hudson Valley and New Jersey) should receive the service before the end of Q3 2008. Additionally, Start Over and Quick Clips will reportedly be coming to all of the aforementioned systems on July 1st, but a soft launch is apt to sneak in a month prior. Still not enough? No worries -- Time Warner will also be busting out a new service dubbed Virtual Video Store, which will supposedly offer up a library of older movies for rent at just $1.99 apiece. Now, let's see if TWC delivers, shall we? [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]

FSN New York becoming MSG Plus HD, more HD coming to Staten Island

We're not certain if this change will affect more than a few key areas of New York and New Jersey (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Bergen, Mt. Vernon and Hudson Valley to be precise), but Fox Sports Net New York is set to become MSG Plus in mid-March. As expected, FSN NY HD will also become MSG Plus HD, but channel slots on TWC aren't expected to change. Around the same time, YES HD in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island will be relocating from channel 730 to 753, while NY1 HD gets added to the Time Warner Cable lineup in Woodside and Staten Island (only, unfortunately) on slot 701. For subscribers on Staten Island, you can also look forward to seeing Discovery HD (766), Animal Planet HD (786), TLC HD (752) and Science Channel HD (755). Needless to say, Manhattan gets the proverbial shaft yet again, but we'll keep you posted if things change. [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]

Comcast adding nine HD channels in New Jersey

While we're pretty sure New Jersey residents (along with many other cable subscribers nationwide) were envious of Virginians earlier this month, it looks as if Comcast is taking its additions up north. Reportedly, the cable company is scheduled to add SportsNet New York HD, USA HD, Sci-Fi HD, Food Network HD, A&E HD, HD Theater, The History Channel HD, HGTV HG and Animal Planet HD to the lineup on March 27th. Granted, not all parts of NJ will be affected, but we are hearing that systems in the Jersey Shore communities from Sandy Hook down to Long Beach Island should find 'em late next month.

FiOS TV celebrates one year, comes to more homes in New Jersey

Just as CES was hitting full swing here in Vegas, Verizon cranked up a party of its own in order to commemorate one year of FiOS TV in the Garden State. A dozen months back, the service initially launched in around 100 New Jersey communities, and as of today, FiOS TV touches some 270 communities in 15 counties. Thankfully, however, VZW actually invited quite a few individuals to join in the festivities -- namely residents in 11 Gloucester County communities, which can now order up FiOS TV in their neck of the woods. Also of note, customers in the area who sign up for the fiber-based television service by February 3rd (and have everything installed by March 1st) can look forward to receiving a free 19-inch Magnavox LCD HDTV. Not exactly a KURO or anything, but hey, gratis is gratis.
