TSN to broadcast all of its NBA games in HD

While Raptors TV is still pushing for some HD love in the Great North, powerhouse TSN is gearing up to deliver every single one of its NBA broadcasts in stunning high-definition. As of now, the station is planning to air 78 regular season tilts (including 48 Toronto Raptors matchups) in HD, and as part of the deal, it will also broadcast the NBA All-Star game, a minimum of 17 games throughout the post-season and exclusive Canadian coverage of the NBA Finals. The Raptors action gets going on TSN on November 1st at 8:30PM ET, and fans of the club can check out their entire TSN schedule in the read link below.

Every single 2008 - 2009 LA Lakers game to be aired in HD

Getting to the NBA Finals has its perks. 'Course, being situated in Los Angeles, California doesn't hurt either. Either way, LA Lakers fans who can't get enough of HD sports are really in luck, as the club's entire 2008 - 2009 season (we're talking preseason, regular season, the whole shebang) will be aired in crystal clear high-definition. Between KCAL HD, FSN HD, TNT HD, ESPN HD and ABC HD, every last Lakers game, home and away, will be available (at least in the greater LA area) in HD. C'mon NBA -- how about we make this the norm rather than the exception?

FSN Wisconsin airing 25 Milwaukee Bucks games in HD

FSN Wisconsin has kept Brewers fans happy all summer long, and now that the NBA season is just around the bend, it's about time we heard from the channel on that front. When the Milwaukee Bucks hit the hardwood this year, FSN Wisconsin will be there to broadcast 25 of its matchups in glorious high-definition. The HD fun gets going on November 8th when the team takes on the Phoenix Suns, and you can check out the full schedule in the read link below. Now, if only the club could find some talent...

Raptors TV pushing for HD signal in Canada

It's not easy to light up an HD channel in the Great North, but what is typically the biggest hurdle has apparently been overcome by Toronto Raptors Network. Amazingly, the CRTC approved an application by the aforementioned company to offer a high-def signal of Raptors TV in Canada. Conditions require that the HD version carry 95% of the same content as the SD flavor, while the other 5% must also be high-definition material. Now, TRN must persuade cable and satellite companies that Raptors TV HD is worth the bandwidth, but it seems that industry analysts are pretty bullish on its chances. We can't say our hopes are that high yet, but we've definitely got our fingers tightly crossed for you NBA-lovin' Canucks.

Oklahoma City's Ford Center upping HD abilities

Haven't you heard? The Seattle SuperSonics are packing up and heading down to Oklahoma -- er, sort of, anyway. Said franchise will have to be renamed once situated in Oklahoma City's Ford Center, but whatever they end up being called, they'll surely be looking sharp on television. Reportedly, said arena will be getting an overhaul that will focus on improving the lighting and "capabilities for broadcasting games in high-definition." Eventually, management is hoping to pour some $100 million into renovating the venue, with the project mentioned here to suck up around $450,000 of that. There's no mention of details just yet (they're still waiting for bids), but fans of the to-be team will certainly want to tune in to see just how impressive the end results are.

Verizon lassoes Kevin Garnett in to push FiOS

Merely months after Verizon managed to secure Michael Bay's talents to campaign for FiOS, the carrier has now snagged Celtics superstar Kevin Garnett to push its fiber-based services. The NBA big man is now starring in a 30-second spot for Verizon's FiOS, showing off just how much he adores the innovative Home Media DVR with multi-room recording playback capabilities (its words, not ours). First Frank Caliendo, then Mr. Bay, now KG -- who's next, Don King?

Salt Lake City's KJZZ-14 to air Utah Jazz games in HD

We know, it's not like you Utah residents really want to see a Game 6, but at least it gives you another shot at catching your Jazz in high-def, right? Salt Lake City's own KJZZ-14 has announced its intentions to serve up all 2008 Utah Jazz playoff games in gorgeous HD, and while there's no mention of what it plans to do next season, we'd say chances are pretty good that it'll keep the newfound tradition alive in 2009 and beyond. Those within reach can catch the games via OTA, but others will be asked to turn to channel 657 on Comcast Digital Cable in order to follow along. That is, of course, if you're staying away from the Energy Solutions Arena this Friday night.

Fans react to 3D Mavericks / Clippers matchup

Under normal circumstances, we tend to give 3D a hard time around here, but it's hard to deny the strides the technology has made of late in an attempt to move beyond being a gimmick and into a desirable product. It seems that hundreds of NBA fans that packed the Magnolia Theater just days ago were quite impressed with the first regular season matchup to be aired in 3D. Those in attendance were able to catch a commercial-free 3D broadcast of the Dallas Mavericks versus the LA Clippers courtesy of two Sony 4K projectors and a set of gaudy glasses. Unfortunately, we're not sure if the one-time event will blossom into something more, but feel free to tap the read link for more opinions and a couple more snapshots.

FSN Southwest preps first NBA regular season 3D broadcast

It's good to see those Brits aren't the only ones getting 3D HD sports action this season, as PACE is back and hooking its Fusion 3D tech to an NBA game yet again. For the first time during the regular season (after last year's All-Star Game and a Finals game) -- and unsurprisingly with a connection to Engadget HD friend Mark Cuban (where's our invite man?) -- the March 25 game between the Dallas Mavericks and L.A. Clippers can be viewed live at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, or across town in the Magnolia Theatre with Sony's SXRD 3D projection system beamed onto an 18x42 foot screen for VIPs and 100 lucky fans who can win entry on mavs.com. Now if they could just find a way to simulate buying tickets for way over face value from eBay or StubHub in the theatre, it would be just like going to a real game.

Sportvision breaks backboards during NBA 2008 All-Star Game

Last night's All-Star game continued tradition by debuting new broadcast technology, as you may have noticed Sportvision's "Backboard Slideout" graphic, superimposing pictures and text on a virtual screen during free throws. It was pretty slick, almost indistinguishable from a real billboard. We've gotten pretty used to virtual graphics (does anyone remember football before the yellow first down line?), any opinions on this latest use of the tech, or predictions on how if it can withstand the power of a Dwight Howard dunk?

NBA All-Star Weekend 2008's HD by the numbers

NBA All Star Weekend 2008 is upon us, and while it might not have the 3D cachet of last year's game, there will be plenty of HD to look forward to while voting on the dunk contest. Not just a U.S. spectacle, this year's game will be broadcast in HD in Belgium, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia and Spain. TNT has lined up 32 HD cameras to cover ASW, and 22 HD video servers, all connected via 10 TV trucks, 122 flat screen monitors and 66 miles of fiber cables. The festivities start tonight with the rookie challenge at 9 p.m., but the number we're looking for is how high Dwight Howard jumps in the dunk competition, and if he recreates Andre Iguodala's off-the-back-of-the-backboard reverse jam.

Phoenix Suns to broadcast entire 2007-2008 schedule in high definition

The Phoenix Suns organization has taken the impressive step of announcing it is the first NBA team to broadcast its entire regular season scheduled in high definition. That's right, every game with two-time MVP Steve Nash, Amare Stoudemire and Shawn Marion in HD. It certainly makes sense that with the investment in that core group of stars, and a streak of 71 sellouts at home, that the team should make sure Suns fans get a good look on TV as well, but its still frustrating that we can't get the same commitment this year for a 16-game NFL season. If the local team doesn't step up its broadcast capabilities, we can see people trading in #1 jerseys for #720p and #1080i.

Cavaliers fans to watch the finals in 3D HD

FSN OhioThe best thing about using a series of games to decide the champion of a league is the fact that fans from both teams get to experience at least one home game. But even when your team is away, people often still gather and watch the game at the arena (if not on their big screen); and this year the Cleveland Cavaliers arena-goers are going to have a better viewing experience than most. Rather than watching the away games on the side of a building, though, they'll be catching the action in glorious three-dimensional HD -- with a little help from 3D motion imaging specialist PACE. The game will be captured with PACE's Sports Fusion 3D HD camera systems. Then using TI DLP projectors, it will be displayed on four 46-feet 3D screens. So, even if you aren't a basketball fan, if you're anywhere near the Quicken Loans Arena on Sunday at 9pm, you might want to check it out -- assuming you can even get in.
