Engadget HD's recession antidote: win a ZVOX Mini soundbar

ZVOX Mini soundbar
This whole global economic crisis, and its resulting massive loss of jobs got us thinking. We here at Engadget HD didn't want to stand helplessly by, announcing every new round of misery without giving anything back -- so we decided to take the opportunity to spread a little positivity. Today we've got a cute little ZVOX Mini soundbar to give away. Perfect for a bedroom, this little guy can pull duty for music and/or TV and will sound so much better than the dreck that passes for TV built-in sound. Read the rules below (no skimming -- we're omniscient and can tell when you've skimmed) and get commenting! Hooray for free stuff!

Big thanks to ZVOX for providing the cheer!

The rules:
  • Leave a comment below. Any comment will do, but if you want to share your proposal for "fixing" the world economy, that'd be sweet too.
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you'll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)
  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you'll be fine.
  • Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don't make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.
  • Winner will be chosen randomly. The winner will receive one (1) ZVOX Mini soundbar. Approximate value is $200.
  • If you are chosen, you will be notified by email. Winners must respond within three days of the end of the contest. If you do not respond within that period, another winner will be chosen.
  • Entries can be submitted until July 14th, at 11:59PM ET. Good luck!
  • Full rules can be found here.

Apple iTV set top box announced: 2007

Apple is finally entering the living room with their long-awaited set top box, codenamed the iTV, due in Q1 2007. The box can stream video from a connected Mac/PC or directly from the internet. No word yet on HD content specifically, but with the component and HDMI jacks on the box it's certainly come to the high-def party with the proper attire. Besides that there are USB, Ethernet, RCA and optical audio connectors, plus included 802.11 "wireless component video". You can watch movies, podcasts, view photo slideshows all on your HDTV through an updated Front Row-style interface on this half-height Mac Mini lookalike, all for $299. Continue on for pics of the back and interface or check out Engadget's coverage of the event.

Update: Engadget has a hands-on and close up photos of the unit and interface, it is tiny. Still no word on supported output resolutions.

Pics of the HDMI-mini connector

Just a little HD p@rn for you this morning. This is the new HDMI mini connector that will be used for high-def camcorders and such. It was recently approved in the HDMI 1.3 specs. Nothing real fancy or cool but still interesting.

Hooking up a Mac Mini to your HDTV: If it doesn't just work

Then you probably don't have a television that includes a digital input like DVI or HDMI. If you own an older HDTV that is a likely scenario but not one that should prevent you from enjoying the 1080i Apple loving that our friend Ben has shared with us. robg of Mac OSX Hints.com  has created a walkthrough for connecting a Mac Mini running OS 10.4 using RGB cables and adjusting overscan.

Even if you're not a Mac-phile check out his page anyway for the DVD quality/HDTV quality comparison of the Harry Potter trailer available. Blow them up full screen and check out the additional detail noticeable even in those stills.

Update: You can also get more information on Rob's HD experience with the mini in this article.

WWJD? Results @ Engadget

Mac Mini HD (photoshopped)

Because the day isn't complete without a Mac rumor, and in lieu of more real Apple rumors, Engadget  decided to have their readers make some up. In answer to the question "What Would Jobs Do?"  in his surprise announcement tomorrow, readers created their own potential Apple products.

Although it only garnered an honorable mention, this one was our favorite for obvious reasons. Check out the rest, there are some really talented and funny photoshoppers out there.
