Cox provides HD programming, internet at US Naval Base in San Diego

The proud men and women of the United States Navy have to get their HD fix somehow, right? Being that the answer to that is undoubtedly "yes," we're happy to see that Cox Communications has signed on to provide HD programming, high-speed internet and digital phone services to the Pacific Beacon residences at the US Naval Base in San Diego, California. Currently, services are being installed in 512 units at Palmer Hall, while all of the buildings in the complex should be complete (and completely wired) by March 1st of next year.

American Forces Network plots upgrade to HD in 2013

Soldiers are generally used to making sacrifices for their country, but in our opinion one has to draw the line somewhere. The American Forces Network delivers programming to military personnel all over the world, and unfortunately does not plan to convert its satellite broadcast to high definition until 2013 at the earliest for Pacific regions, and 2014 for Europe. At that point all broadcasts are expected to switch to HD, but until then soldiers will have to put up with the same often highly compressed video now available. More details are expected about the plan in the next 18-24 months, but for now the network is advising personnel to skip picking up that new TV since there's not much to watch on it yet. Perhaps if we found a military application for 1080i we could things sped up a bit - at the least, we think it'd improve morale.

Xenonics SuperVision Tactical Package does night vision in HD

Traditional night vision kits aren't anything extraordinary, but Xenonics is taking things beyond the pixelated output we're used to and going straight to HD. The outfit's SuperVision Tactical Package comes packed with a high-definition night vision device, a SuperVision IR Illuminator and mount, a Snyper Tactical illumination light, additional circuit-protected rechargeable Li-ion batteries, additional CR 123 batteries, a battery charger and a waterproof SKB case for those treks through the moat. Granted, this here bundle is aimed at police departments and security firms more than mere consumers, but who's to say you can't have a little fun in your own backyard once the sun heads down?

Super Bowl XLII to be beamed to naval ships in Pacific Ocean

We already knew that pigskin fanatics in 223 countries would be able to catch Super Bowl XLII this Sunday, but thanks to Raytheon's Global Broadcasting Service (GBS), even sailors and Marines stationed aboard ships in the Pacific Ocean will be able to catch the Giants attempt to mar the Patriots' currently unblemished record. The aforementioned technology has been in use for over a decade delivering "high-speed, multimedia broadcasts of mission critical information to military and government decision makers," but this weekend, it'll be used to bring home entertainment to folks far, far away from home. Sadly, it doesn't sound like the broadcast will be in HD this go 'round, but we suppose any football is better than none at all, right?
