What we're watching: It's 7/7/07, and we've got ongoing Live Earth HDTV coverage on Universal HD all night, with a few hours on NBC as well. NASCAR's Pepsi 400 brings night racing from Daytona to TNT and Miami Vice hits Cinemax at 10.

The HD DVD tour isn't spending all its time in New York hanging out at the Today Show's new HD studios, its pulled up to Digital Life 2006 at the Javits Center. In a press release issued by the North American HD DVD Promotional Group there were also new details about the upcoming December 5th release of Miami Vice on HD DVD; like Fast and the Furious 3: Tokyo Drift and Accepted, it will include U-control special features. Viewers can check out specs on cars and boats featured in the movie, track car chases through Miami streets via GPS, or look at production photos and cast details while the movie continues to play. Firing off more shots in the format war, the group also announced statistics from AC Nielsen showing HD DVD owners have already purchased an average of 8.4 titles each, and Nielsen Videoscan numbers indicating HD DVD outsold "competing formats" -- we're pretty sure they don't mean VMD -- by nearly 3:1 in August. The best defense is a good offense, and the HD DVD camp is taking the big Blu-ray holiday push head-on, showcasing not just new movies but also new hardware like the Xbox 360 HD DVD player and upcoming Toshiba HD-XA2.

Universal Studios just keeps on cranking out the HD DVDs. First up, Miami Vice is hitting the shelves on December 5 as a DVD/HD DVD combo disc embedded with Dolby Digital TrueHD 5.1 audio track. Then the following week The Hulk is finally seeing the light of day and Kevin Costner's Field of Dreams are going to be available on the format. Both of these discs are going to carry a price of $29.99 and the Miami Vice combo will hit at $39.99. At this rate, sooner or later Universal is going to run out of titles in their vast library -- well, maybe not, but they are sure releasing a bunch of HD DVDs lately.

There is a new generation of film makers that are throwing out the norm and embracing high-def. Micheal Mann is willing to work with all new technical difficulties that arises when shooting in high-def. He shot Collateral two years ago in high-def but that flick didn't take place cruising across the Gulf of Mexico at 70 miles an hour. All that salt water and humidity plays havoc with the cameras but he did it. After four and a half months of testing alone, Miami Vice was shot totally in high-def. The filmmaker hasn't given up on standard film but the new medium does provide the viewer with a different experience.

What we're watching: It's movie night on the major networks with The Rookie on ABC and Behind Enemy Lines on CBS. NBC is where we'll be however, with the Miami Vice: Undercover special airing tonight featuring both highlights from the upcoming movie and a re-air of the original premiere episode in high definition. Seriously, as though there is any other option for viewing pleasure.

Almost overnight, the list of "coming soon" titles on the North American HD DVD Promotional Group's The Look and Sound of Perfect website has exploded, with many new titles listed, some for the first time. Included on the list are recent releases like You, Me and Dupree and even yet-to-be-released summer blockbusters like Miami Vice and totally undated projects like Idlewild. We're sure these titles will come out on HD DVD eventually but the question is when. With limited studio support, HD DVD backers will be hard pressed to point out what you can watch on HD DVD because we're sure their competition will make a selling point of what you can't.

To drum up hype for the upcoming movie, stars Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx will be hosting a three-hour Miami Vice special that will include a rebroadcast of the original pilot in high definition. The special is called Miami Vice: Undercover, and will also include a behind the scenes on the new flick now directed by former Vice producer Michael Mann. The website indicates the special will air July 22 at 8 p.m., so put your pastel suit on and clear out some time in your schedule. Keep an eye out for a change however, as the website also lists The Italian Job for the exact same date and time, so one of them will have to move.

Because one of the few things we like better than HDTV is explosions, pastel suits and Miami......in HD. I have no idea if this movie is going to be good or not but all you have to say is Crockett and Tubbs and I am there.
