R.I.P. Monsters HD - October 2003 - January 2009

Surviving long after its removal from DISH Network as an online offering, Monsters HD has finally succumbed. Fangoria Online's revealed that it, unlike bloggers, could not survive on the Internet alone. That shouldn't stop you from heading over and checking out a few classic horror flicks for free in high definition, so punch the read link to see Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Jeepers Creepers and others but by the end of this month it will all be over.

HDNet Movies debuting Splinter to get you in the Halloween spirit

Look, we know good and well your Halloween night is already booked solid, but that's not to say you can't start getting spooked out a few days beforehand. HDNet Movies is looking to set the tone this year by debuting the horror film Splinter two days prior to its theatrical release. The flick is the feature film debut from British director Toby Wilkins, and the press release even describes it as "an exhilarating ride of jolts and laughs, and a throw back to the classic creature features of the early '70s and '80s." Sounds like the perfect way to spend an 8:00PM time slot on October 29th, yeah?

Blue Underground goes Blu-ray, announces initial slate of releases

Fitting, isn't it? Blue Underground, a well-respected distributor of cult / horror films, has decided to start releasing projects on Blu-ray Discs. Additionally, we now know the first half dozen flicks that it plans on releasing: The Final Countdown, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Stendhal Syndrome, Maniac, Vigilante and Fire and Ice, though we're sure hits like Uncle Sam, Dead and Buried and Two Evil Eyes won't be far behind. Each disc will boast 1080p transfers, 7.1 DTS-HD / Dolby TrueHD audio tracks, D-Box Motion Code (on select titles) and a plethora of extras. We're still curious to see how the transfers turn out, but this is certainly good news for underground horror fanatics.

Hitchcock marathon to ring in the New Year on HDNet Movies

Got any big plans for New Year's Eve? If not, HDNet Movies is hoping you'll spend the evening glued to the Alfred Hitchcock marathon that will be broadcast as 2008 rolls in. Starting at 3:30AM on December 31st, viewers can catch nine of Hitchcock's classics before the feature presentation takes over at 10:30PM. 'Course, we needn't tell you that Psycho will indeed be the main act, but horror aficionados will also appreciate the likes of Vertigo, The Man Who Knew Too Much, The Birds and Rear Window (just to name a few). Reportedly, each of the movies were "meticulously converted from original film sources" in order to be shown in 1080i, and hey, if you've already made plans to get out of town, just pick up a capacious new DVR and catch up when you return.

NBC Universal announces Chiller, the HD horror channel

While we've already heard DirecTV's claim to carry 100 HD channels in 2007 (or something like that), we've just found that one of those hundred will be dedicated entirely to the horror genre. NBC Universal has just announced that its first 24/ 7 horror channel, to be dubbed Chiller, will launch in both SD and HD formats on DirecTV. Additionally, NBC plans on offering up Chiller content through video-on-demand, although we don't know if HD VOD plans are in the pipeline. Although long-term programming goals haven't quite been nailed down, users can expect a solid lineup of classic horror content when it launches on March 1st, including Friday the 13th, Twin Peaks, The Shining, Psycho, The Birds, Sphere, The Crew, and quite a bit more. Be sure to hit the read link for the full rundown of initial programming.

HDTV Screams: Masters of Horror coming back for a second season

Masters of HorrorThere's not much in the way of high definition thrillers yet, but Showtime's Masters of Horror series fills the spot well, even if some of the episodes are a bit campy. Our friends at TV Squad have let us know that the series will be returning for a second season, no word on which directors will do episodes yet.
