NBC Universal brings Heroes to Blu-ray August 26

Heroes fans can get their full HD fix August 26, when the DVD boxed set of season two is released on DVD, it'll also hit Blu-ray and bring along season one for the ride. No word on price or what extras are in store (or if 1080p will somehow make the whole twins subplot less meaningless, just a thought), although the S1 set on HD DVD last year included HDi internet connectivity, and we don't expect anything less from BD-Live. Universal is going day and date with its movies starting with Doomsday, while NBCU's first dual-format feature film should hit shelves ahead of the holidays.

Xbox 360 HD DVD drive comes with free Heroes S1 set at Best Buy Sunday

Rumored all-in-one units aside, Xbox 360 owners looking for HD DVD still need an add-on drive and this weekend the deal could be getting a whole lot sweeter. Leaked scans of a supposed upcoming Best Buy ad reveal the $99 SRP Heroes: Season One seven-disc HD DVD set will be bundled for free; the recently updated five free HD DVD offer and existing King Kong pack-in combine to take make the $179 drive essentially free. We're not sure what will make the difference in the ongoing format war, but throw in enough free movies and even Michael Bay will have to shout.

Update: This deal also appears to be in effect at Buy.com until 11/4.

What we're watching: ABC, NBC and CBS are rolling out their fall premieres, with several returning shows and a few brand new ones. In between standbys like DWTS and Heroes, keep an eye out for the series premieres of Chuck, The Big Bang Theory and Journeyman.

Heroes: Season 1 seven-disc HD DVD set previewed at Comic-Con

The HD DVD Promotional Group is on the ground at Comic-Con, with the price drop of the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on and accompanying 5 free disc promotional offer, with more details of content to expect this holiday season. The Heroes: Season 1 HD DVD boxed set will be available August 28, including HDi features exclusive to the high def release, like a web enabled download center, Heroes Abilities Test, picture-in-picture commentary and others. This is Universal's first release to take advantage of HD-DVD's online capabilities, but it won't be the last. The seven disc package has an SRP of $99.98, and as mentioned earlier, Xbox Live members will be able to download the pilot episode for free before its release.

Xbox 360 HD DVD player now just $179

The already nicely priced Xbox 360 HD DVD player just got slashed to $179. The new US-only, retail pricing also includes 5 free HD DVD flicks when purchasing the player between August 1st and September 30th -- you know, the same time period 300 and Heroes goes on sale in HD DVD format. Unfortunately, the free titles must be made from a selection of just 15 pre-selected films which Toshiba considers "popular." Nevertheless, the $20 price cut makes the Xbox 360 HD DVD player all the more enticing as an easily hacked, USB-player for HD flicks on your PC.

Update: Xbox 360 owners will be getting downloadable treats to promote the add-on, Microsoft announced that the movie 300 will be available on Xbox Live Video Marketplace in HD starting August 14th. In a repeat of the South Park promotion earlier this year, the first episode of Heroes will be made available for free prior to the release of the boxed set on HD DVD for a limited time.

HDTV Listings for January 22, 2007

What we're watching: 24 or Heroes? Many are debating that question tonight as each has a new episode airing at 9 p.m., not to mention fellow returnees Studio 60 and Prison Break. Luckily we came prepared with dual tuner DVRs, but for those who must choose only one, we hope you find solace in the knowledge that there is no wrong choice. (If you don't watch 24 then the the terrorists have won.)

What we're watching: Happy New Year, and for us the highlight of the day is in just a few minutes when Michigan takes on USC in the Rose Bowl on ABC, but later on tonight we've also got the Fiesta Bowl featuring Boise State and Oklahoma. Not into football? Never fear, with three episodes of Heroes on NBC, a Northern Exposure marathon on Universal HD and Brokeback Mountain on HBO-HD there should be a suitable option for your HDTV viewing pleasure. Let's hope the rest of 2007 is as well-stocked with HD goodness as today is.

What we're watching: Finally an HD premiere from The CW, as Runaway, a series about a whole family on the run from the law begins tonight. Also airing for the first time is Heroes on NBC, as everyday people gain supernatural powers. Slightly less fantastic but still extraodinary is the return of the NFL to New Orleans, with the Saints home opener vs. Michael Vick and the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip received good reviews for its premiere episode and is back with number two, along with the whole CBS lineup bookended by new comedy The Class and CSI: Miami. If Heroes doesn't fulfill your sci-fi urge, there's still Star Trek: Enterprise on HDNet and Doom on Cinemax.
