VUDU brings Pandora, Picasa and Flickr to connected HDTVs, promises more apps soon

And you thought HDTVs were made for watching TV. VUDU has today slung its (admittedly paltry) library of applications over to its television partners, making both Picasa and Flickr access possible through LG and Mitsubishi sets with integrated VUDU software. Of course, all of this was already available to those relying on one of VUDU's dedicated set-top boxes, but it's always nice to have everything wrapped up neatly within the display itself. In related news, Pandora streaming is also available on VUDU-infused Mitsubishi panels, though for whatever reason, LG has "requested that only free TV and games be available on their devices." All bummers aside, the company has asserted that even more internet apps will be released to VUDU customers in the coming months, so make sure hold 'em to their word.

DirecTV adds an app store, but compelling reasons to visit remain elusive

Confirming the theory that "everything must have an app store" DirecTV has followed the lead of Verizon and launched a central, online-accessible location for subscribers to choose TV Apps which are then downloaded onto their set-top boxes. Currently holding apps including ScoreGuide, weather forecast, Starz On Demand Feature and more the only question remaining -- judging by the cool reaction to the technology so far -- is why? Our friend Dave Zatz points to a subscriber's YouTube video demoing the Flickr browsing experience that has the same performance problems we observed while reviewing Samsung's latest HDTV. From here you can hit the read link to check out what's available, queue up downloads plus view demos from DirecTV or check the user video after the break. While there is surely an effective way to combine TV and the internet, it looks like this implementation isn't it, yet.

Flickr adds HD video streaming for pro users

Flickr is finally catching up with the crowd, now that it's launched HD video uploads for paying subscribers. Time is still limited to 90 seconds and filesize is a mere 150MB, so don't expect anything too impressive to show up, but for Pro users wanting to show off a few quick clips from their HD-capable cameras, it should be fine. Still on a free account? Now you'll be able to upload (SD) videos, but only two per month.

Yahoo! recaps a day of setting the Internet-on-TV movement on fire with Widgets

Okay Yahoo!, we're sorry we teased, we give up, you win. After what certainly seemed on this end to be an endless run of HDTV manufacturers announcing support for the Widget Engine today -- and serving up a hefty slap in the face to Microsoft and others who've been moving the Internet to TV movement for some time now -- all we can do is look over the carnage. Signed up on the app side of platform formerly known as Konfabulator are content providers like eBay, MySpace, CBS, Blockbuster OnDemand (in its first off-2Wire MediaPoint appearance), Netflix, Showtime, USA Today and Twitter, while the Widget Development Kit has opened up to developers interested in putting their apps on the screens of millions. Hardware should street starting this spring from the likes of Samsung, LG, Sony and Vizio leaving the biggest question mark as how the competition and their clumsy external boxes can possibly respond.

Vizio takes the cover off Connected HDTV: Netflix, Blockbuster, Amazon, Yahoo! and more

Netflix streaming is one thing, but Vizio seems to be taking its new status as a premium HDTV manufacturer very well, with the new Connected HDTV platform featuring support for Yahoo! Widgets, Flash, Blockbuster OnDemand (!), Flickr, Pandora, Rhapsody and Accedo Broadband. Due Fall 2009, owners can feel free to go wired or 802.11n style to connect to any of these services in HD, if supported. Clearly missing? Yahoo!, Media Center Extender, but the 2H 2009 fight of Internet-ready televisions is on - set-top boxes better watch their back.

Samsung / Yahoo Internet@TV widgets revealed

Samsung and Yahoo! promise the Best of the Web on select 2009 HDTV models, thanks to the Internet@TV widgets we snuck a look at a few weeks ago. Developers build Javascript and XML apps that then run directly on your Samsung HDTV, starting with USA Today, YouTube, eBay, Showtime and Yahoo properties like Flickr and Yahoo! News. Next up their sleeves? Video streaming and "other popular Internet services" running through the built-in Ethernet or optional Wi-Fi USB dongle. Also, unlike some others, the Internet@TV Content service isn't just a U.S. thing, headed to 12 other countries this year: Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Having the Internet no further away than the nearest remote was your biggest request for '09, right?

AT&T to stop giving U-verse users free access to Flickr Pro

It may be easiest to bang on those cable carriers who all seem to hop on the price hike bandwagon at the same time, but AT&T's making a name for itself in the up, up, up department. Shortly after hearing that a few U-verse TV components would be priced higher come February, we're now clued in to the fact that U-verse users will no longer have gratis access to Flickr Pro. Beginning on January 31, 2009, those currently using a Flickr Pro account will downgraded to the free version of Flickr unless they opt to pay the $25 yearly fee. Who knows -- maybe not enough users were taking advantage? Either way, the news sure bites for those who've been enjoying it on the house.

[Thanks, Justin]

VUDU rolls out YouTube, Flickr, Picasa and games

VUDU labs
Lookee what VUDU brought to the Thanksgiving feast -- a spread of goodies that should dispel mutterings about the little box that could being a "one trick pony." More internet video from YouTube (hopefully with official HD from YouTube to follow soon), photo browsing of Flickr and Picasa and games, too. We use the phrase "games" pretty loosely, as Solitaire and Freecell won't be displacing your console -- unless you're still rocking an Atari 2600 -- anytime soon. FormatWarCentral was particularly impressed with the YouTube navigation, and now we're wondering how far off music playback can be. Sure, none of this is as exciting as the ability to purchase downloaded HD content (although music would come close), but that's just our tryptophan-induced gluttony talking!

AT&T enables Flickr photo viewing on U-verse TV

As carriers (and STB manufacturers) continue to implement new and varied extras to make their service just different enough to reel you in, AT&T's making sure it doesn't get caught stale by enabling its users to view Flickr images from the comfort of their couch. AT&T Online Photos, as it's so eloquently dubbed, is an integrated photos channel that allows users to access their own account and watch slideshows by simply flipping to channel 91 or navigating through the U-verse TV menu. Hey, U-verse subscribers -- why not give this a go and see if it's more useful than gimmicky (or vice-versa)? One more look after the jump.

Digeo announces Moxi-related partnerships, but not prices or release date

Unfortunately, the biggest news about Digeo's interesting Moxi DVR platform is that there are still no release dates or prices attached, which greatly overshadows their new content partnerships with Flickr, Finetune, Accedo and Cloverleaf. It seems that listening to indie bands, performing casual gaming on the TV, accessing web photos and menu overlays is a lot easier to do when the box is in our living room, as opposed to just on display -- again.
