eASIC eDV9200 H.264 codec promises HD for all devices


We've already got HD in places that the cast of Step by Step would've sworn was never possible way back when, but eASIC is far from satisfied. To that end, it's introducing a new H.264 codec aimed to bring high-def capabilities to all manners of devices, including (but certainly not limited to) toys, baby monitors, public transportation, wireless video surveillance and wireless webcams. The highly integrated eDV9200 is said to "dramatically lower the cost of entry into the high-definition video market, enabling a new class of low-cost applications to fully leverage the benefits offered by HD technology." Best of all, these guys aren't just blowing smoke, as the chip -- which captures streaming data directly from a CMOS sensor, compresses it, and transfers it to a host system or to a variety of storage devices -- is priced at just $4.99 each in volume. HD oven timers, here we come!

Panasonic's HDC-SD100 and HDC-HS100 AVCHD camcorders, now with extra MOS


Ready for some new terminology? Good, try on "3MOS" -- Panasonic's newest sensor adaptation which, judging by machine translated text, is a trio sensors capturing twice the light of a single CMOS of the same 1/6-inch size. Think 3CCD applied to CMOS sensors. The result is said to be superior image quality and impressive low-light recording capability -- twice the sensitivity of its own 3CCD camcorders thanks to what Panny calls its new "heavy lifting iA" enabling them to shoot in a mere 2 lux of available lighting. That's just a glimpse at what you'll find inside the solid state HDC-SD100 (supporting up to 32GB of SDHC) and the HDC-HS100 hybrid offering both SDHC and a 60GB hard disk for storage. These 1080i AVCHD camcorders also features Panasonic's improved optical image stabilization, a 12x optical zoom, 5.1-surround mic, and HDMI-out.The ¥130,000 (about $1,205) SD100 and ¥150,000 (about $1,390) HS100 should hit the Japanese retail block on July 12th.

Thomson intros 9211 HD CMOS image sensor with Full HD resolution

Not that you'll see one of these in your next digicam or anything, but Thomson's latest HD CMOS image sensor could still make the world you watch a lot clearer in due time. The 9211 is currently aimed at industrial applications such as machine vision, medical imaging and high-end video surveillance, and even offers up the ability to capture pixels in progressive or interlaced formats. As expected, this device features a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution and on-chip dual 12-bit A/D converters, but who knows how long it will be before your every step in a Las Vegas casino is logged in 1080p.

Cypress Semiconductor has announced that its OSCAR CMOS sensor is the retina for the eyes of both the ARRIFLEX D-20 camera and the ARRISCAN film scanner. Digicam buffs may scoff at the 6-megapixel OSCAR array, but we HD fans know that's more than enough to produce the crispy images we crave on the big screen. The 2880 x 2160-pixel sensor can read out at high frame rates and run speed ramps, useful for either shooting live or digitizing film stock. The sensor is a "full frame," Super 35 size, so the optical results are the same between the D-20 and its film-based counterpart; a necessity for camera crews and their existing arsenal of lenses. If you're curious about how good this gear is, check for yourself -- the ARRISCAN was used in "King Kong" and "Die Hard IV," the D-20 shot the TV shows "Hogfather," "Tin Man" and "Baker Street."
