Universal HD claims there's more than the Olympics going on in August

Universal HD hopes to pump up its lineup around the Beijing Olympics, featuring Olympic Trials highlights in "Olympic Athlete Weekend" on August 2 and 3. Beyond just the coverage around the events in China there will also be plenty of extreme sports and boxing coverage all month. The news that season 4 Battlestar Galactica premieres on the station next month would be more exciting if this were last year and the Sci Fi HD simulcast hadn't launched already, but in case you didn't/don't have the station yet, there you go. Hopefully when the offices are moved from LA to New York -- along with Sleuth and Chiller -- NBC Universal will find some more compelling original content to fill the time after the Olympics are over.

More new HD channels on the way from Discovery, CNBC and Chiller

DirecTV HDYou know times are good when we are surprised when it is more than a week between new HD channel announcements. This week we have a few more channels for you, but not as many of details as we would like on any of them. Discovery will be launching what they are calling four new channels, but one of them is an HD simulcast of the Discovery channel. We're not sure if this will replace the Discovery HD Theater that we have all come to love, or just add even more HD content, but they will also be launching HD simulcast versions of TLC, Animal Planet and The Science Channel. These new channels from Discovery will be carried at launch by at least DirecTV this September. Also mentioned in the press release as coming this year is CNBC and Chiller (who?). While it is still questionable if DirecTV will carry 100 HD National channel this year, -- at least without counting sports packages -- this will certainly be remember as a big year in the transition of cable TV channels to HD. A full list of the channels announced to date after the break.

NBC Universal announces Chiller, the HD horror channel

While we've already heard DirecTV's claim to carry 100 HD channels in 2007 (or something like that), we've just found that one of those hundred will be dedicated entirely to the horror genre. NBC Universal has just announced that its first 24/ 7 horror channel, to be dubbed Chiller, will launch in both SD and HD formats on DirecTV. Additionally, NBC plans on offering up Chiller content through video-on-demand, although we don't know if HD VOD plans are in the pipeline. Although long-term programming goals haven't quite been nailed down, users can expect a solid lineup of classic horror content when it launches on March 1st, including Friday the 13th, Twin Peaks, The Shining, Psycho, The Birds, Sphere, The Crew, and quite a bit more. Be sure to hit the read link for the full rundown of initial programming.
