Sacramento's KOVR broadcasts local news in HD

Ready to see (local) talking heads in high-def, Sacramento? You're in luck, because CBS affiliate KOVR is finally broadcasting its local newscasts in HD. As of October 1st, locals were able to tune in and hear all sorts of fantastically hopeful news in a higher resolution than ever before, though the switch won't make the weather and / or stock market any easier to predict. Bugger.

[Thanks, Eric]

Every single 2008 - 2009 LA Lakers game to be aired in HD

Getting to the NBA Finals has its perks. 'Course, being situated in Los Angeles, California doesn't hurt either. Either way, LA Lakers fans who can't get enough of HD sports are really in luck, as the club's entire 2008 - 2009 season (we're talking preseason, regular season, the whole shebang) will be aired in crystal clear high-definition. Between KCAL HD, FSN HD, TNT HD, ESPN HD and ABC HD, every last Lakers game, home and away, will be available (at least in the greater LA area) in HD. C'mon NBA -- how about we make this the norm rather than the exception?

[Thanks, Pete]

AT&T takes Total Home DVR to Houston and San Diego

We've a feeling we'll soon be unable to keep up with all the Total Home DVR rollouts, but we aren't complaining one bit about the speed at which AT&T is getting it out there. Hot on the heels of Austin, Fresno, and a handful of other cities getting gifted, AT&T has quietly given Houston, Texas and San Diego, California residents the ability to watch recorded shows on connected TVs anywhere in the house. Dollars to donuts a few more markets get lit up before October dawns.

[Thanks, Artur and Anthony]

Time Warner Cable adds Science HD / Disney HD in San Diego

While Comcast has been handing out HD channels like a rich guy hands out candy on Halloween, TWC has been mighty stingy with its high-def expansions. Handing out a network here and there, we see the carrier gifting San Diego, California with two more: Science HD (780) and Disney HD (763). Not much, but we suppose beggars can't be choosers. Well, actually... [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]

AT&T takes Total Home DVR to Los Angeles, St. Louis and Fresno

We're hesitant to say that the flood gates are open, but it looks like AT&T is pushing its Total Home DVR software out at a pretty regular clip. Just days after introducing it in the Bay Area and merely hours after dumping it on Dallas / Fort Worth residents, AT&T is now bringing the U-verse update to customers in Los Angeles, Fresno and St. Louis. In short, the software refresh enables users to play back any recorded SD or HD program on any connected TV in their home at no extra charge. Who's up for placing bets on the next locale to get the good news?

Verizon taking FiOS orders in Mar Vista, California

Despite Verizon's continued silence on the matter, FiOS has actually landed in Mar Vista, California. Earlier this year, clues were falling in place for the service to arrive, and according to a local, things are finally good to go. As the story goes, a Verizon representative actually stopped by tipster Jeff's house in order to persuade him to sign up for FiOS TV, high-speed internet and digital phone. He (the rep, that is) noted that installation appointments were being setup for next week, so we suspect we'll get the official word soon enough. At least you've got a few days to mull it over, right?

[Thanks, Jeff]

AT&T rolls U-verse into Bakersfield, California

As AT&T's U-verse presence grows in California, it follows logic that Bakersfield would get gifted, too. Following the news that Lubbock, Texas residents would now have another choice when it came to HDTV programming, high-speed internet and digital phone service, the provider has officially launched its services in parts of the City of Bakersfield, Rosedale and Greenacres. Per usual, AT&T will continue to expand in those areas as time goes on, but you can phone 'em up now to see if your domicile is already within reach.

AT&T celebrates one year of U-verse in Sacramento, CA

We'll be frank -- we're getting a little tired of AT&T patting itself on the back each time a U-verse locale reaches its first birthday, but we figured it prudent to point out that said services are now available to over a quarter-million living units in the greater Sacramento area. Since launching in (you've got one guess)... August of last year, the fiber-based programming / internet / digital phone service has expanded to cover select parts of Carmichael, Fair Oaks, Folsom, Gold River, Lincoln, Rancho Cordova, Rocklin, Loomis, El Dorado Hills, Stockton, Modesto, Ceres, Fairfield, Vacaville, Mountain House and Tracy. We appreciate the kind words for yourself, but how's about a little gift for those loyal customers? Say, a few new HD channels?

Verizon's FiOS TV expansions: August 16, 2008

For the second week in a row now, we've got quite a few locales getting blanketed (or at least getting set for coverage) by FiOS TV. Verizon has announced that its fiber-based television / high-speed internet services are now available in Covina, West Covina and Sepulveda, California. Furthermore, Washington state is getting even more FiOS TV love by awarding the carrier a video franchise in Woodinville. We wrap this week up with confirmation that said service is finally headed to Newburgh, New York after initially hearing that a deal was in the works last December. We'll see you next week -- here's to hoping your neck of the woods gets covered within the next seven days.

TWC adds a fresh dozen HD channels in parts of West LA

No longer will you be ridiculed by nearly everyone else in Southern California, West LA residents -- Time Warner Cable has just dropped its latest dozen HD channels in your area. According to a local, he asserts that the SDV conversion has finally been completed in the region, enabling Discovery HD (418), Golf / Versus HD (423), ESPNews HD (426), CNN HD (432), HGTV HD (433), Food HD (434), Disney HD (435), ABC Family HD (436), TLC HD (437), A&E HD (438), History HD (439) and National Geographic HD (440) to be seen at long last. Also of note, USA HD (450) and CNBC HD (451) were added for additional Olympics coverage last Friday, though we'd expect those to vanish in under a fortnight. [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]

Update: Exact neighborhoods and corresponding launch dates now after the jump. Thanks, HD!

Ventura, CA gets two NBC HD channels from Charter, more on the way

Charter doesn't have the greatest reputation in Ventura, California (or most anywhere, for that matter), but the company is apparently trying to garner some love by throwing in two undisclosed NBC stations in high-def just before the Olympics kick off this Friday. Customers will still be waiting until 2009 to see video-on-demand, but HD junkies will be thrilled to know that more channels are on the way. According to company spokesman Del Heintz, nine more HD channels will be added to the lineup in September, though your guess is as good as ours as to which ones will go live. So, who's up for watching to see if it actually delivers on said promise?

First US-based aloft hotel opens in Rancho Cucamonga, California

Some might say that Rancho Cucamonga, California is a strange place for a ribbon cutting ceremony, but we figure that there's hardly a better place in America to have HDTV within an air conditioned room. Sure, it's not exactly in Death Valley or anything, but the aloft Ontario-Rancho Cucamonga is close enough to Zzyzx to warrant an excuse for staying indoors during the summer. The 136-room venue just opened its doors to guests last week, becoming the very first aloft hotel to actually open for business in the United States. Each guest room has its own HDTV and connectivity panel, and the hotel-wide WiFi should keep you satisfactorily connected during your stay. Anyone plan on stopping by?

NBC11 gives Bay Area residents local news in HD

Well, if it isn't about time. KNTV (the Bay Area NBC affiliate) has just recently switched its local newscasts to high-definition, giving residents of Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose the opportunity to catch up on nearby happenings in glorious HD. There has been no big to-do about it, but a video waiting after the jump shows a clip promoting the refreshed NBC Bay Area HD. So, anyone in the area ditching their favorite talking heads to view others in high-def?

[Thanks, John]

TWC posts rollout schedule for HD channels in Southern California

For the zillions of folks located in Southern California, you may be wondering when exactly the new dozen from Time Warner Cable would hit your neighborhood. Wonder no more, as TWC has posted a rollout schedule with loads of communities filed under July, August and September. You know what they say about patience, right? [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]

San Diego FOX / ABC affiliates taking local news high-def

While KFMB-TV has had a stranglehold on the HD news market in sunny San Diego, that's about to change. Beginning in September, the local ABC affiliate (KGTV) will begin airing its local newscasts in high-definition, and for those impatient souls, the local FOX affiliate (KSWB-TV) will be making the same switch on August 1st. Furthermore, KUSI-TV Channel 51 is expecting to take "everything on the channel, including local news broadcasts," to the high-def realm starting in February of next year. Seems like a few other cities could learn something from this one.

[Thanks, Tony]
