Ask Engadget HD: What's the best large LCD (42-inches and up) for the buck?

It looks like the time is right to pick up some the best HDTVs 2008 had to offer on the cheap and Louis has the same question as most of us, which one to pick?

"My old CRT is on its last legs and I've decided my next HDTV is an LCD for my TV watching and Blu-ray needs, but with all the options I'm having trouble telling the difference. I'm not worried about any extra features unless they affect picture quality, and I want to go bigger than my last (40-inch) TV. Samsung, Sharp, Sony or ?????? -- which one should I be checking the sales pages for?"

We've done this on the plasma side recently, but surely some of you are among the many rocking brand new LCD sets. Let us know which of the outgoing models made your eyes happiest in the last year.

Ask Engadget HD: What's the best plasma to pick up?

With plasma sets apparently gaining back some of that ground it has been losing to LCD for, like, ever now, this question from Raul seemed like the perfect fit for this week's edition of Ask Engadget HD.

"I've got my heart set on getting a new plasma on Black Friday or as the holiday sales get going, but I'm running into too many options that I think will work. Obviously, I want deep blacks and the ability to hang it on my wall, but I'm trying to keep the cost down. Are these Vizio PDPs even worth looking at? Is the KURO really the end-all answer? Help!"

Surely more than a few of you out there have plasmas -- KURO or otherwise -- and are willing to throw this guy a bone. No size was mentioned, but we're guessing he's looking in the 42- to 50-inch range. Have at it in comments below!

UltimateAVmag makes "Best of the Year" picks

Considering the subjective nature of any "best of" list, it's always enjoyable to toss out results and watch onlookers pick apart the decisions. That being said, we're thrilled to have yet another list of winners at our disposal, this one crafted by the folks over at UltimateAVmag .com. The highlights include JVC's DLA-HD1 as projector of the year, Sony's 70-inch KDS-70XBR2 as RPTV of the year, Revel's $35K Ultima2 Studio2 System as speaker setup of the year and Onkyo's TX-SR875 as AV receiver of the year. In an interesting move, Sony's PlayStation 3 was chosen as disc player of the year due to its "speed and reliability," and Toshiba's HD-A30 took home budget product of the year honors. The standout victor in all of this was Pioneer's PDP-6010 KURO plasma, which isn't at all surprising considering the reviews. Granted, this isn't the first time a Pioneer PDP has grabbed the gold in similar competition, but this particular model snagged flat-panel of the year and product of the year medals on its way down the red carpet. CNET unveils its top-rated HDTVs

Yeah, we've already let you guys voice your opinion on the best HDTV out there, but now its time for CNET to dish out an updated version of the "top-rated HDTVs regardless of type, technology, brand, or size." Taking a respectable fourth is the Samsung LN-T4665F, which was praised for its excellent shadow detail and beautiful styling, while the Pioneer PDP-5070HD managed to squeeze into third thanks to its accurate color decoding and impressive array of inputs. The first loser (or runner-up, depending on perspective) was the Mitsubishi WD-65831, which was dubbed "as good as it gets" in the 65-inch range for those not savvy with high-end plasma pricetags. Unsprisingly, Pioneer's stunning PRO-FHD1 took top honors due to its excellent detail with 1080-resolution material, deep blacks, and all around excellent picture quality. Of course, this very set also took home the gold in an earlier showdown, so if you've been teetering on how to blow wisely spend $8,000 or so, the choice seems pretty clear at this stage.

Swanni's 2006 'Best & Worst' HDTV list - now here is the best

Yesterday, we brought you Philip Swanni's Worst Celebrity in HDTV listing and today, here now here is the best. Starting out this year is the stunning Scarlett Johansson followed by the almost equally breathtaking Beyonce Knowles. Evangeline Lily and Josh Holloway, both of Lost fame, hit the list at three and four but Eva Longoria holds down number five desperately strong. Charlize Theron rings in at number six followed by Christina Aguilera at lucky number seven. Elizabeth Hasselbeck represents The View on this list at number eight while Ben Affleck somehow made it onto the list at number nine. Number ten is Martha Stewa...what? There has to be someone better looking then Martha Stewart to finish Swanni's Best & Worst list. How about the two My Name is Earl babes, Jamie Pressly or Nadine Velazquez to name two better candidates then the jail bird Stewart.
