Poll: Best LCD backlighting choice?

Last week we took a peek into plans for future HDTVs, but it's 2009 and for buying an HDTV in the here and now there's only a few flat panel choices - while plasma definitely has its fans, facts are gentlemen (and most buyers) seem to prefer LCDs. As seen at CES, every manufacturer has kicked the competition for backlighting and image quality up a notch, with higher quality CCFL backlighting and even LED trickling to lower end brands, most notably Vizio's planned $2,000 55-inch HDTV due later this year. Further confusing things, though Samsung will also have an updated local dimming LED backlit line on shelves later this year, it's currently touting slim, energy efficient edge lit LED models, despite their slightly lower picture quality, while some top of the line LCDs with older CCFL lighting keep pumping out high quality pictures. So we bring the question to you, of the technologies currently on the market, which one has you convinced it's a good buy?

Samsung prepping 6.5mm LCD for CES?

Rumor has it that Samsung is set to reveal an ever-so-thin HDTV prototype at CES this week -- a clear trend going into the show. There's a paucity of info about it as of now, but we hear it's going to be anywhere from 6.5 to 7mm thick, and it doesn't appear to be part of the possible lineup we saw leaked a while back. "Thinnest HDTV" ever, huh? We'll see about that soon enough: Samsung's Vegas press conference is scheduled for Wednesday.

LG / Philips readying LED-based LCD HDTVs?

As if every other major television manufacturer hasn't been touting LED-based sets for quite some time, LG / Philips are purportedly reading a 47-inch LED-backlit LCD to be unleashed "as early as the second quarter" of this year, and if things pan out, it'll sport a whopping 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution as well. Interestingly, it seems that the set might appear first under the Philips brand name, with an LG flavor to emerge shortly thereafter. Of course, we've no idea how serious the two firms are on keeping this 2Q forecast a reality, nor how much dough it'll demand when (if?) it finally hits the showroom floor, but with specs like this, a ship date couldn't come soon enough.
