A hot, hot summer isn't keeping The Weinstein Company from staying busy, as just weeks after announcing its intentions to finally join the herd and go Blu-ray exclusive comes word that it has inked a long-term deal with Showtime Networks. The two have entered into an "exclusive seven-year film distribution arrangement" which will be effective with Weinstein's 2009 release schedule. Showtime viewers can expect to see Nine, Inglorious Bastards and other highly acclaimed pictures from the outfit, and for those interested, you may be stoked to find that the output deal "also includes releases from Dimension Films." The Weinstein Company is the big studio that everyone seems to forget. Back when HD DVD vs Blu-ray was really cranking, it was common to create tables listing which studios were on what side, and somehow despite a pretty good selection of movies, everyone always forgot about Weinstein. Weinstein started out all Red all the time, but later its titles went MIA from the HD media world completely, which has left many wondering how long it would take before every major studio was releasing titles on Blu-ray. Now with less than thirty days to go until Universal goes Blu, we've learned that on August 5th, when The Mist is released, HD fans everywhere should finally have access to movies from every major studio in Hollywood for the first time ever.HD DVD discs from Weinstein having playback issues

Blu-ray seems to get all the bad press but all HD DVD discs aren't immune to playback issues. The latest batch of HD DVDs from Weinstein (American film studio for you non-film savvy folk) including, The Matador, Derailed and Wolf Creek, seem to be glitchy on both the Toshiba HD DVD players installed with the latest firmware and the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive. Viewers are reporting issues that include but are not limited to "overly" slow load times, freezes, and unreadable discs. The studios' home video section responded with the normal press lingo saying that are researching it and closely monitoring the situation but we aren't holding our breaths for a mass recall and replacement resolution though.

Former Miramax heads Harvey and Bob Weinstein have decided to join
Universal in exclusively supporting Toshiba's HD-DVD format. Our friend Warren Lieberfarb (he of the "Sony is
using tactics from the Art of War" statement) is a consultant to their distribution company, Genius, so this is
not entirely surprising. No word on what titles to expect or exactly when, but apparently they will probably release in summer rather than spring with the launch of the first HD-DVD players. Also, Studio Canal has pledged to release 30 titles in europe, while Toshiba is expecting more than 200 HD-DVD discs available before the 2006 holiday season. Will that be enough to stave off the Blu-ray/PS3 behemoth bearing down on them?
The Passion of the Clerks, Sin City 2, Scary Movie 4, Michael Moore's "Sicko", all on HD-DVD only apparently.
