CBC plans 282 hours of HD Olympic coverage

Our friends in the Great White North can expect some great HD coverage of this summer's Olympic games, as the CBC recently laid out its broadcast schedule, planning 282 hours of high definition coverage, while TSN promises 150 hours of HD coverage. CBC will also throw in 400 hours of SD coverage, which, may not equal NBC's numbers, but anyone who's viewed both can tell you without a doubt their presentation has trumped NBC's in its ability to satisfy sports fans (with the exception of their curling obsession during the Winter Olympics) with live action for many years. Online streaming of 1,500 hours of event coverage including live events will also be available, so we don't expect Canadians will miss a minute of the action from Beijing.

Sharp's AQUOS HD Netcam makes NHL debut

We were already well aware that TSN and HD were like BFFs, but now hockey fans have yet another reason to tune in to NHL games aired on the network. Starting with tonight's tilt between the New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils, TSN viewers will get a look at the netminder's territory like never before. Tonight marks the debut of Sharp's AQUOS HD Netcam, which is being hailed as the first ever netcam to be used with high-def capabilities. Of course, the remainder of TSN's regular season and playoff broadcasts will take advantage of said camera, and if you're one to call goals into question due to SD replays of the puck crossing / not crossing the line, we suppose your skepticism is about to take a real hit.

Oh, Canada: TSN SportsCentre HD launches today

The first HD broadcast of SportsCentre (not SportsCenter) is tonight at 6:30 EST on TSN for our friends up north. They'll finally have a fully HD studio and high-def highlights of games. Anyone who watches ESPN-HD regularly is aware of how much better it is when you can see the highlights of all the games as intended, we're glad our Canadian brethren will get a look at the latest hockey, curling and Ricky Williams clips in HD. They're calling themselves the first fully equipped high definition newsroom in Canada, on October 2nd the Molson That's Hockey daily half-hour show will also launch in HD. ESPN and Discovery led the charge to HD for many stations in the US and we expect a similar result for Canadian television.

Would you rather have your sports in stretch-o-vision or letterboxed?

Going back through the files, we noticed that Canada's The Score announced last week they were launching the nation's first HD sports channel that is widescreen 24/7. They're achieving this by stretching any 4x3 SD content to fit a widescreen frame, much like TNT does, no word if its the exact same technology.

They will be unveiling native HD content (no stretch-o) during the NBA playoffs, but till then, do you prefer the way ESPN (and presumably TSN also?) does SD. or do you want full frame upconversion, no matter what the distortion?
