French national HD channels first to implement Dolby Digital Plus

You know those four French national channels that decided to recently made the leap to high-def? Yeah, well those four are the first HD terrestrial TV channels to implement Dolby Digital Plus. In fact, both Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Digital were chosen by those broadcasters for the Television Numerique Terrestre platform, and viewers tuning into TF1 HD, France 2 HD, ARTE HD, Canal+ HD and M6 HD will be able to listen to 5.1-channels of audio so long as they have the requisite decoding equipment. Interestingly enough, the French HD forum specification "requires that by December 2008 HD-ready TVs for sale in France must include Dolby Digital Plus and High Efficiency AAC (HE AAC) audio." Atta way to be proactive, France!

TBS's quasi HD network to launch September 1st

TBS LogoEver since Turner (also a Time Warner company, like us) got in the HD game we've had a love-hate relationship with them; not only do they stretch all their SD content, but they make things worse by claiming it's HD in the guide data. If you were hoping they would stop doing this, think again, cause it's getting worse, now that they're adding a second channel. Sure TBS HD will have some good quality HD when it launches in September like original programming and MLB playoffs, but they are sure to have plenty of stretched content as well, and they brag about it to Multichannel news by saying shows like Friends will be presented in HD. Sure, anything is possible, but considering Friends wasn't produced in HD, they'd have to go back to the source and convert the entire series to HD from film -- like Sony did with Seinfeld -- to make it happen.

DIRECTV pauses TNT HD in favor of high-def football

DIRECTV has a problem with bandwidth and is taking it out on TNT HD. Sundays over on the high-def version of TNT are usually reserved for low-quality HD movies but not for the rest of football seasons. It seems like DIRECTV is shutting off the station to provide more space for their NFL Sunday Ticket. In fact if you tuned to TNT HD yesterday, there was a large NFL Sunday Ticket logo where movies where suppose to be. After all the football coverage is complete though, TNT HD will return back to its normal programming. TVPredictions.com is reporting that DIRECTV does plan to launch two new satellites to remedy the problem and hopefully provide more HD stations to their starving lineup. The real question is whether or not they will do this once NASCAR starts...
