JVC's GY-HM100 / GY-HM700 ProHD camcorders capture QuickTime straight to SDHC

Before buying either the JVC GY-HM100 / GY-HM700, you better be darn well married to Apple's Final Cut Pro. Said ProHD camcorders are the industry's first in the solid state line to store files in native QuickTime format onto SDHC cards. Apple's pushing the fact that users don't have to transcode or re-wrap prior to editing, and considering that each one cam can hold twin SDHC cards, you'll be able to capture a maximum of 64GB before needing to reload. And just think, this time next year the successor will hit with dual SDXC support, giving buyers a maximum capacity of 4TB. Decisions, decisions.

Quicktime 7.5.7 update cleans up HDCP Macbook issues, but only on SD vids

Releasing it's stranglehold on iTunes Fairplay DRM'ed content just a bit, Apple has issued a Quicktime 7.5.7 update, that allows standard definition videos to play on external displays without HDCP support. High definition content still toils under HDCP and DisplayPort content Protection (DPCP), leaving oldschool displays at least functional, but sadly low res. Any new MacBook / MacBook Pro owners out there making the non-HD supported Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA journey who can check in and let us know if it's working now? Grab the lastest version with your usual Software Update function or from the apple Support Download Website.

HD Trailer Tuesday

It has been a few weeks since we have had the chance to do one of these but luckily Apple has been too busy as well to update the site with loads of content. They have only added a few new high-def movie trailers to their site and even though today might be a bad day for bandwidth (for Apple - not us), ah, what the heck. First up is Driving Lessons staring one of the boys from those popular Harry Potter flicks. The clip of course looks good in high-def, we love the transitions, but the movie looks surprisingly good. Give it a chance. But if you only have time in your busy day to watch one of these high definition clips, you must watch A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. Wow. Looks amazing in HD but to be honest, this movie is going to be all about the content and most people would be happy with a 480i version if the flick turns out to be half as good as the preview. Lets Go To Prison looks funny and you might just need a laugh or two after Saints. If you are new to this, start at the 1080p option if you have a 'beefy' computer, but more then likely you are going to need to drop down to ether the 720p or 480p option if the system is a little older. That's fine though, the 720p and 480p clips still look great. Enjoy!

HD Trailer Tuesday

Mission Impossible IIIApple's been quite busy getting out more HD trailers over the last few weeks, so there's plenty of downloading to go around. If folks missed the "Mission Impossible III" Super Bowl spot, Apple added it to the list on the same day it hit the high-def airwaves and it's highly recommended. Don't forget to comment if any trailers are a "must see" or a "don't waste your bandwidth".

HD Trailer Tuesday

Harrison Ford in FirewallLooks like the Apple folks took a few weeks off from trailers or they're all catching high-def screenings over at Sundance. There weren't too many new HD trailers over the past few weeks, but now you can feast your eyes on the latest HD trailers:
  • Firewall - Harrison Ford stars as a Rebel pilot Bank security expert whose family is taken hostage for $100 mil
  • Click - Adam Sandler and Kate Beckensale married? You go Happy Gilmore!
  • She's the Man - College comedy; do we need another?
  • When a Stranger Calls - This was too scary looking for me to even get the details. We say: get on the "Do Not Call" list.
  • Hoot - Middle school students fight back against local government and land developers.
  • Dirty - Cuba Gooding, Jr. in fights crime in an anti-gang task force.
There you go: clean out those bandwidth pipes, start downloading and comment with your trailer thoughts!

DivX, QuickTime and more on Xbox 360

Videora
We cried over a lack of native DivX support for Windows Media Extenders before Christmas but Santa must have read our post. Apparently we were good little HD boys and girls because Santa (in the form of Xbox.com forums) just gave us a little gift: a free conversion application!

Videora's Xbox 360 Conversion software takes AVI, DivX, XviD, and QuickTime files and converts them to your choice of WMV, MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 format. We just grabbed a copy from Videora's website to give this a try, so there's more to follow. We're really intrigued by the $30 companion software that allows for "ITvCasting"; it appears that you can use RSS to subscribe to videos in WMV format and have them automatically downloaded to your WMCE PC for streaming on the 360. Thanks Santa!

HD Trailer Tuesday

Thank You For SmokingGot broadband and a monitor capable of 720p or better? Then warm 'em both up because it's time for some high-definition trailers courtesy of Apple's QuickTime site! There are six new trailers available in HD, so start downloading and watching. Hey, if you're feeling like an overachiever, don't let us stop you from posting an "HD Trailer Review" in the comments. Who knows? You could be the next guest movie reviewer over at Cinematical!

There you go, have at it and may the fastest broadband pipe win!

Triple trailers in HD from Apple

V for VendettaThese folks just never stop pumping out the high-definition trailers, do they? Maybe we need a weekly round-up post just to highlight the newest HD trailers from Apple. Should we call it Trailer Tuesday?

Anyway, get the Drain-O out to clean your bandwidth pipes and head over to Apple's QuickTime site to suck down some 720p and 1080p trailers. The latest and greatest include:
Just for fun over the holidays, I'll try to see if these can be re-encoded in a format that Windows Media Center can digest for streaming to Windows Media Extender. Unless it works natively of course; any takers on a bet that it doesn't?
