OldSchool posts

Blu-ray releases on December 16th 2008

Old SchoolWith about a week to go until Christmas and a week after The Dark Knight, it's no wonder this week's lineup is way less than exceptional. So because there really isn't anything to get too excited about we're going to prop up a title that we'd bet will be a classic one day, Old School. If you haven't seen this one and you enjoy a good laugh, what are you waiting for? If you have, and can't wait to enjoy it all over again for the first time in HD, then say it with us, "You're my boy blue!" Also this week, Criterion's long awaited titles finally hit the street along with plenty of catalog titles form Paramount and Universal. Universal has what is arguably the biggest day-and-date title with The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, but it's IMDB score of 5.2 has us unimpressed. Next week slate isn't much better, but it does have one we're looking for with Burn After Reading.

Global VR unveils plasma-equipped UltraPin machine

Sure, there's a number of technologically advanced arcade games out there, but it's hard to top a few rounds of good ole fashioned pinball. Revamping the retro-styled machine is Global VR, who replaces the traditional bumpers, flashers, and ramps with a 32-inch 16:9 plasma HDTV (pic after the break). In a presumed attempt to alleviate that all-too-common problem of balls getting stuck and bumpers losing their punch, there's no internal moving parts to worry over, but it still features the "force feedback and digital sound reproduction" that makes racking up those high scores so immensely thrilling. The inclusion of a display allows for multiple themes to be used, and the $6,000 purchase price gets you Attack From Mars, Medieval Madness, F-14 Tomcat, Strikes and Spares, Sorcerer, and Xenon. While we doubt the built-in monitor can double as your secondary gaming display, it's sure to be the centerpiece of any throwback arcade (or living) room.
