We are finally getting our first Summer blockbuster in time for the holiday season,
after some rumors of delays, as
Iron Man is set to hit the shelves tomorrow. This is the first title to be released in some time that is expected to once again raise the Blu-ray bar and be the best selling titles to date. But this isn't the only news this week, for starters Discovery has its latest title,
When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions, which we expect to sell well, but nowhere near what
Planet Earth did. Universal has a decent slate as it has a few catchup titles HD DVD and DVD fans have been enjoying for some time like
Knocked Up and
The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Halloween is very obviously right around the corner as all the horror flicks are being released in droves this week, like the famous
Dawn of the Dead and
Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Another catalog we look forward to enjoying for the first time all over again is
The Sixth Sense. Noticeably absent from the list this week is two Olympic titles like the Opening Ceremonies and a Michael Phelps special, that are only available on DVD. Looking forward, next week is the first time Disney is going into the vault and releasing a classic on Blu-ray with
Sleeping Beauty, and there are a bunch more horror movies on the schedule as well.
Although we all still have to wait until next week to finally get our hands on what is almost sure to be the best selling Blu-ray title of all time, the first week of December has a lot to offer the HD movie fan. Universal takes a break from it's normal slate of catch up titles and has the arguably best offering of the week in the way of Wanted. But the best movie this week in our heart -- and many other based on the fact that it is the #1 movie of all time according to IMDB -- is The Shawshank Redemption from Warner. The ol' WB also has the popular Austin Powers Collection as well as the classic Casablanca and the comedy from Bam Margera. Fox has a day and date that many will be interested in with The X Files as well as a few holiday classics like Home Alone. Sony also has a day and date this week mixed in with a few catalog titles with Step Brothers which we're sure is as silly as it is funny.
Just when you thought there wasn't any way there was going to be any more super hero movies this year, along comes Sony with Hancock. While there's no way this is the biggest movie of the season -- Dark Knight is due in a few weeks -- it is easily the biggest movie of the week. Next up are a couple of solid catch up action titles, The Kingdom and Jarhead, from Universal which are most definitely entertaining. Fox and Warner both have something for the family with, Space Chimps and Fred Claus. There is a bit more to be excited about next week though as Disney, Fox, Sony and Universal all have at least one nice offering. 
As we get closer and closer to the end of the year, each and every studio keeps releasing new titles in record numbers, as is evident this week with over 20 new titles. Dreamworks's animated feature Kung Fu Panda is the biggest this week and while it is expected to sell well, we'd be surprised if it managed much of DVD's market share. Another animated movie which is probably more in line with the Blu-ray demographic though, is Futurama: Bender's Game. Steve Carell's latest comedy is out this week from Warner with Get Smart, which is sure to be good for a laugh. Although these movies will be the most popular this week, the theme is most definitely Planet of the Apes with six classics released by Fox. The next few weeks is much of the same,as we count down to the remaining blockbusters due this year like WALL-E and the Dark Knight.
We're switching up the format a bit on the weekly Blu-ray release post, because the number of titles being released each week is so great, and the total number of titles so insignificate, that from now on we're just going to focus on the movies we find interesting and drop the title count all together -- mostly because it's impossible to keep accurate anyways. The biggest news this week is that Weinstein is finally releasing its first Blu-ray titles, so for the first time ever, every major Hollywood studio is on the Blu-ray band-wagon. The biggest title this week -- which isn't saying much -- is Sony's date-and-date 88 Minutes. Following the catalog and TV show releases trend we expect to see the rest of the month we have one of our favorite shows, Pushing Daisies, if you haven't seen this show in HD, the picture quality and female cast members alone, make it worth your while to take a look. The big catalog this week is a movie from our youth, Risky Business, which we look forward to checking it out in HD for the first time ever, but next week's Godfather series is sure to be a bigger seller.
