We know, we know, we're really late on this one -- thanks Sony -- but around here we think it's important to review every Blu-ray player. And we're sure there are some who don't want to wait for the replacement due out in a few months, so here's the impressions of Sony's current entry level Blu-ray player. The good news is that although this player is missing many critical features, it shares just about everything we loved with the much more expensive BDP-95FD that we reviewed last month (psst: it's obvious that Pioneer and Sony work together on their Blu-ray players). So if picture-in-picture, internet content, TrueHD and DTS-HD aren't important to you, then you may want to save some money and pick one of these up now.

Pioneer discontinuing BDP-LX70A Blu-ray player in UK?

You've got permission to file this one in the rumor folder for the time being, but we've received word from across the pond that Pioneer may be nixing the über-pricey BDP-LX70A Blu-ray player in the UK. For those unfamiliar, it's the Euro version of the prestigious BDP-95FD that we reviewed just last month. There's no word on exactly when the product will be discontinued (nor if the US version will follow suit), but we are hearing that numerous back-orders have been canceled and that a replacement model won't be around until August. Taking a step back, ditching such a high-end player that had a fairly decent following doesn't seem to make sense, but then again, who thought Pioneer would ever let anyone else get their panels inside the almighty Kuro?

There are Blu-ray players, and then there are Blu-ray players, and when it comes to the best of the best, the Pioneer BDP-95FD is at the top. If you're the type that believes in love at first sight, then this might be the player for you, because one thing's for sure, you get a good looking player for $1k. But since looks aren't everything, we spent the past few weeks putting Pioneer's Elite player through the paces. As much as we love it, it's not all good, so read on for the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Pioneer BDP-95FD Elite Blu-ray player unboxed

There are some days when we just can't believe we get paid to work for Engadget -- and a day when a Pioneer Elite BDP-95FD Blu-ray player and VSX-94TXH Audio/Video Receiver show up at our labs, is most definitely one of those days. Pioneer really knows how to make some nice looking hardware and as you hold them, there's no doubt you have a premium product in your hands. Our initial impressions of both components have us very impressed and while we slave away putting this high-end hardware through the paces, you'll have to wait for our full review. As if Pioneer's booth wasn't sensational enough already, the inclusion of the brand new BDP-95FD Blu-ray player made it even sweeter. Make no mistake, Pioneer is awfully proud of this creation, as an on-site rep was claiming that it was "the best Blu-ray player on the market" while bragging to onlookers. 'Course, this Elite device does tout some of the nicest specs we've seen, and yes, it pained us to leave the booth without being able to bring one home. Bottom line: this "reference quality" BD player looked incredibly good in person, and judging by how well Pioneer's other Elite merchandise has been received, we've got high hopes for this one.

Pioneer intros BDP-95FD Blu-ray player

We've already seen more than a few Blu-ray and HD DVD players make their debut at CEDIA this week, and Pioneer's now tossed an entry of its own into the pack, unveiling its new high-end BDP-95FD Blu-ray player. As Pioneer is quick to boast, this is apparently the first such player to offer bitstream output of "all advanced audio formats" including Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital+, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio. Otherwise, the player will give you full 1080p24 video, along with HDMI 1.3 connectivity (including HDMI-CEC technology), and Pioneer's "exclusive" Home Media Gallery, which will let you network the player with your computer or other DLNA-compliant gear. Just don't expect to be able to do all that on the cheap, with the player set to pack a $1,000 price tag when it's released in October.
