Time Warner Cable adds HD channels in Albany / Rochester, NY

It hasn't been long since Rochester received a few new HD networks from Time Warner Cable, but as the SDV (switched digital video) rollout continues in the Empire State, it seems that it -- along with Albany -- is getting yet another helping. Rochester was just treated to Disney HD, Toon Disney HD and ABC Family HD, while Albany picked up Disney HD, Showtime West HD, Sho2 HD and TMC HD. Curiously enough, folks in New York's capital city are currently not seeing ABC Family HD in their EPG despite the addition of Disney HD. Regardless, new high-def is new high-def, right? TWC gifts Albany, NY with ESPNews HD, Travel HD and WNYA HD

Look out, world -- Albany just landed a very fine trio from Time Warner Cable. While most of the nation is sitting around and waiting anxiously for the arrival of ESPNews HD to their lineup, the fine folks in New York's capital are grinning from ear to ear as they enjoy it on slot 1872. Furthermore, Travel HD was added on 1843, and potentially best of all, the local MyNetworkTV (MyTV4) affiliate WNYA was also just added on 1804. Why so important, you ask? The latter channel has inked a deal to broadcast 21 Yankees games in HD that aren't already claimed by YES, and sure enough, the club has its first MyTV4-based showing tonight when it heads to Baltimore to take on the Orioles. Time Warner Cable brings Discovery suite to Albany, New York

Just days after Time Warner Cable gifted Rochester-area citizens with the Discovery suite of HD channels, an eagle-eyed reader located in Albany has noticed that those very channels have also joined their lineup. Effective immediately, those located in and around the capital of the great state of New York can check out Science Channel HD (1825), Animal Planet HD (1835), Discovery Channel HD (1836) and TLC HD (1844). At this point, we're wondering if TWC will ever provide a noticeable boost to the ridiculously deprived Manhattan EPG, but three cheers for Albany, regardless. Time Warner Cable adds three Starz HD channels in Albany, NY

Starz Edge, Comedy, and Kids & Family all went HD last summer, but of course, it's up to your carrier to actually get on the ball and snatch up what's out there. Thankfully for those in the capital city of New York, the trio is finally available to you on Time Warner Cable. More specifically, subscribers can catch Starz Comedy HD on channel 1892, Starz Kids & Family HD on 1893 and Starz Edge HD on 1894. A small upgrade, sure, but a welcome one nonetheless. Five new premium HD channels land on TWC in Albany, New York

One thing is for certain about this -- those holed up in Manhattan clamoring for more HD from Time Warner Cable will only be screaming louder after hearing that the capital city has received yet another dose of high-definition before the state's most notable city. Yep, just a month (and a few days) after Albany received a small bucketful of new HD channels, subscribers in the area are reportedly able to tune into HBO West HD, Cinemax HD, Cinemax West HD, Starz HD and Starz West HD, provided they pay extra for the Premiums, of course. As tipster Mike N. so eloquently puts it: "Not bad for Smallbany!" [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]

Albany, New York CBS affiliate (WRGB) begins broadcasting news in HD

Nary a month after TWC subscribers in New York's capital city received a welcome helping of new HD options, along comes word that its local CBS affiliate (WRGB) has flipped the switch on news in high-definition. As of last week, Channel 6 is now airing newscasts in high-def, but reportedly, it may not have the edge in the area for long. Rene LaSpina, general manager at WTEN (ABC affiliate) Channel 10, was quoted as saying that it was "definitely going to do it," and also noted that "everybody in the country has plans to [go high-def]." Shame those "plans" haven't materialized in but a few cities across the nation, eh?

Time Warner Cable adds new HD offerings in Albany, New York

Hot on the heels of reports claiming that Time Warner Cable (partly owned by Time Warner, parent company of AOL, which owns Engadget) added six new HD channels in Maine comes a note that eight new offerings have emerged in New York's capital city. Reportedly, residents of Albany can now kick back and enjoy programming on History Channel HD, CNN HD, HGTV HD, The Weather Channel HD, Food Network HD, Golf Channel HD, National Geographic HD and Outdoor HD. Of note, our tipster mentioned that he had to reboot his HD DVR in order to actually receive the newcomers, so give that a go if you're running into issues viewing the aforementioned channels.
