Blu-ray releases on May 19th 2009

Valkyrie - Blu-rayAfter missing some great movies last week, for no good reason, we're back. The most exciting new release is easily Tom Cruise's Valkyrie, but Paramount also has an old favorite in Enemy at the Gates -- if you love playing the sniper in FPS games then this is a must see movie. Lionsgate gets ready for the latest Terminator movie in theaters by releasing special editions of the previous blockbuster hits. There are also a few TV shows this week which is a trend we like to see as True Blood and 24 both get the Blu-ray treatment. Next week is a little slower though, but Universal does have a few more catch up titles -- yeah we can't believe there are still any left either.

24 spin-off The Rookie: Day 3 Extraction hits online, VOD and DirecTV

Fiending for some Jack Bauer ticking-clock action? 24 won't be back until 2009, but Degree is continuing its series of digital shorts based on the series, The Rookie: Day 3 Extraction. Focused on CTU agent Jason Blaine, this season is made up of six 3- to 4-minute episodes with Jason trying to rescue his boss from a drug cartel, and will be available on VOD and online in HD with 5.1 surround sound. We couldn't find the HD versions just yet, but the first installment is available via Comcast's On Demand under Searchlight or on DegreeRookie.com today, and on DirecTV April 7 on channel 115.

What we're watching: Two hours of 24 pretty much ensures a rise in a Jack Bauer kill count that, quite frankly, has been disappointingly low as of late. Still, the 131st Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is coming on Universal HD and we wouldn't miss that for the world. Decisions, decisions.

What we're watching: 24 or Heroes? Many are debating that question tonight as each has a new episode airing at 9 p.m., not to mention fellow returnees Studio 60 and Prison Break. Luckily we came prepared with dual tuner DVRs, but for those who must choose only one, we hope you find solace in the knowledge that there is no wrong choice. (If you don't watch 24 then the the terrorists have won.)

What we're watching: The Jack Bauer Power Hour is BACK. 24 on Fox is the only option for HDTV viewing pleasure tonight. Not that we wouldn't like to check out the season premiere of Rome on HBO, or the first live high definition game from Hawaii, the Hula Bowl on ESPN-HD. We'd tell you more but we don't have enough time. You're just going to have to trust us.

24, My Name is Earl, other HD favorites pick up Emmys

We love HD shows that go the extra mile to take advantage of HDTVs (My Name is Earl, The Office), or just have special effects and environments that look great in HD (24, Lost). At last night's 58th Emmy Awards Lost and Grey's Anatomy were shut out but all the others listed previously took home statues, as well as other HD productions like HBO's The Sopranos and Elizabeth I. Take a look at the full list of winners, it certainly appears the critics think there are shows worth watching in HD.

High-def can give you one of two things. One - an amazing breathtaking image or two - a really poppy picture. HDTV's can be harder to get a good picture from a normal TV if you deviate from the factory presets. many people will turn up the brightness and sharpness to give them a picture that really 'pops' but in turn killing their picture. Most image problems can be diagnosed back to a bad source like basic cable or the TV's setting are just plain off. Popular Mechanics has the best layout of common HDTV image issues we have ever seen. They took an image of Jack Bauer from 24, picked at all the problematic spots and tell you how to fix 'em.

Even if you are the best calibrator in town, you might want to check out this PM article.

HDTV Listings for May 22, 2006

What we're watching: Sydney Bristow vs. Jack Bauer for one night only. Alias surprises us with a move to Monday for a two hour Rambaldi-revealing series finale. 24 also puts a two hour season finale on deck, accompanied by King of Queens, Two and a Half Men, the last two episodes of New Adventures of Old Christine and CSI: Miami.

Not to be forgotten are the ongoing NHL playoffs, as well as two NBA Game 7s. We finally find out who will be going to the conference finals and who will be going home with Mavericks vs. Spurs at 8 p.m. followed by Suns vs. Clippers at 10:30.

HDTV Listings for May 15, 2006 - Presidential Address update

What we're watching: Finales, finales, finales. Three hours of Grey's Anatomy tonight, two of them new. After last night's episode if you're a fan of the series this is a must-see. Prison Break completes its second season (it only feels like it's been on forever) with the long awaited escape, while How I Met Your Mother, One on One, All of Us and Half & Half wrap things up for the year as well. We were all "witnesses" to the Cavaliers surprising Game 3 victory over the pistons, but with a guaranSheed Pistons win tonight, there's not much sense in tuning in until Spurs-Mavericks at 10:30 p.m.

After all that, I highly recommend Discovery Channel's documentary Shipbreakers if you haven't seen it already, and there's also some show called 24...

Update: The re-air of last night's Grey's is apparently going to air after President Bush speaks, so you may want to put an extra hafl hour or hour on the DVR in case the finale does not start on time. Prison Break and 24 are both listed as being bumped 20 minutes, no word on the other networks. Also don't forget that Presidential Address' can often be a good opportunity to see the difference between the HD broadcast of each major network.

HDTV Listings for May 8, 2006

David BlaineWhat we're watching: Prison Break and 24 are on and in action tonight, notable because they might finally break out of prison (how can  a show called Prison Break not actually have a break out yet? That would be as though they called Lost "Found") and on 24 the President may shoot down a jet just to kill Jack Bauer (impossible).

On TNT we have second round action kicking off between the Clippers/Suns and Nets/Heat so you know what you're getting there. The X-factor tonight is street magician/stuntman/demonically possessed David Blaine's attempt to break the world record for holding his breath underwater on ABC. We'll go out on a limb and say there's some sort of trick to it.

What we're watching: Primetime tonight brings us NBA Playoffs, MLB action, 24, Prison Break & more, but those are all also-rans in my opinion.

For true high definition greatness one must decide between Days of Thunder at 6 p.m. on HBO with the Cruise-y one himself, or the highly stylized Sin City at 6:45 on Starz (much like Sky Captain it is entirely green screened and looks great in HD).

HDTV Listings for April 17th, 2006

24What we're watching: What About Brian gives it another go, with tonight's oddly labeled "premiere" thats actually the second episode. I agree with TV Squad that it is trying to be another Grey's Anatomy but I don't know if viewers will find it as interesting. Hot mid-20's doctors vs.some average looking married guys confused about their lifestyle, you make the choice. We're ok with it as long as it doesn't come on at the same time as 24, because Jack Bauer would kill that Brian guy and then ask his friend's fiancee out for drinks (as long as she's not a terrorist).

Since we still don't have an HD-DVD or Blu-ray player yet, we'll probably be watching The Rock at 9 p.m. on HBO

The Ten CommandmentsWhat we're watching: At 9 p.m. you have a choice to make of great spiritual significance. You can either watch an epic tale of a man on a mission from God, or you can watch The Ten Commandments on ABC. Pending any instructions given to us by a burning plasma TV, we'll probably go with Jack Bauer.

Besides, didn't somebody already make a movie based on the 10 heavily-emphasized suggestions?

24What we're watching: You know we're getting a little tired of terrorist stomping w/ Jack Baue.....waitaminnit, we never get tired of that.

From JackBauerFacts.com:

"Nostradamus once predicted in his journal: "In the century 21st, the one known as Jacques will be the savior of the world... five seasons in a row." Moments later, Jack Bauer knocked down the door, shot Nostradamus in the kneecaps, and yelled "WHO ARE YOU WORKING FOR?!""

Nuff said.

However, since we actually like to DVR 24 and watch it starting 20 minutes later sans commercials, we'll be checking out some womens NCAA Elite 8 tourney action on ESPN. The action is pretty good and the quality is better than CBS' broadcast.
