As of now, around 1,500 domiciles in Merriam and Olathe have access to the company's 100Mbps fiber-based internet, and it's hoping to reach thousands more homes by early 2009. Additionally, the FTTH network is bringing along a respectable array of high-def channels to those who dig the bundle, though a specific lineup wasn't mentioned. It's not quite Sigbritt Löthberg fast, but it's pretty nimble.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

NEC intros three plasmas, 1080p PXT-50FHDP1 included

Not quite sure if NEC's three latest will ever be revealed outside of Australia, but we'll take a look if for no other reason than to appease those in Perth, Sydney and Darwin. Starting things off is the PXT-50FHDP1, a 50-inch 1080p plasma that packs a 100Hz refresh rate, a 30,000:1 contrast ratio, multiple HDMI inputs, a built-in EPG and an integrated TV tuner. As for the other guys, we've got the 42-inch PXT42XD3 and 50-inch PXT50XD3, both of which arrive with their own HD tuner, three HDMI ports, a 30,000:1 contrast ratio, RS-232 control ports and a 1,024 x 768 / 1,365 x 768 resolution, respectively. As for pricing? Try $3,499 for the Full HD fellow, $1,599 for the PXT4 and $2,199 for the PXT5.

[Via ARN]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Cox delivers a half dozen HD channels to San Diego, California

While Time Warner Cable and AT&T have been bolstering their HD lineups in sunny San Diego, Cox has been sitting idly by watching the time pass. Finally, the carrier is stepping up and doing a little something to keep things competitive by offering up a fresh half dozen HD channels in the California city. Beginning on October 15th, Cox will deliver MTV HD (730), Spike HD (745), VH1 HD (746), Nickelodeon HD (747), CMT HD (761) and Planet Green HD (783), while Palladia HD will be relocated to slot 732. If you're still unsatisfied, you can also look forward to Comedy HD and AMC HD hitting the EPG in the near future.

[Thanks, Jason]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

MGM reveals specifications, extras for Spinal Tap on Blu-ray

The mere mention of Spinal Tap gets our gears turning, and saying that phrase in the same sentence as "Blu-ray" pretty much stops us in our tracks. The cult classic will be making its long-awaited high-def debut on January 20th, 2009, and MGM has just revealed a few new details to keep the buzz, um, buzzing. The flick will boast a 1080p / AVC MPEG-4 transfer on a BD-50 disc, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless surround track, three audio commentaries (with Rob Reiner, stars Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer, and other filmmakers), a host of deleted scenes, five music videos, trailers and TV spots. Of note, the BD will feature an exclusive "Create You Own Band" BD-Java game, though we can see the novelty there wearing off pretty quick. MSRP is set at $34.99, though it'll probably be available for a few bucks over eleven on launch week. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

AT&T launches Total Home DVR in Cleveland, doesn't bother to tell anyone

Filed under: DVRs, Set-top boxes, Fiber

AT&T's continuing to roll its Total Home DVR software out at a fairly regular pace, and the latest region to get gifted is Cleveland, Ohio. 'Course, the provider has yet to officially spill the beans or anything, but it's not totally unheard of for areas to get the updated functionality without any indication that it was coming. In fact, Circuit City is sending out notifications to consumers that pre-ordered the unit to inform them of the holdup. According to the note, the manufacturer (that'd be LG) has yet to release the product to the store for shipment, meaning that there's no telling when it'll finally be received. What's the deal, LG? Is this just a momentary snag, or something we should really be concerned about? Check the full e-mail after the jump.

[Thanks, Jeffrey]

Update: Seems that only some retailers are getting their shipments delayed -- hopefully you get lucky.
Continue reading LG's BD300 Netflix / Blu-ray deck gets delayed

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

History Channel UK bringing HD Bio and Crime channels

Life and crime go together kind of like life and taxes, so it's fitting that The History Channel UK is bringing out HD versions of the Biography Channel and The Crime and Investigation Network to Sky's lineup. Between Bio's pledge to get serious about HD and the worldwide party that History is throwing, this gives Brits something to cheer about. According to CNET's tests, the difference in power saved by more efficient (but not necessarily ideal PQ) default settings could be as much as a $100 a year, although that will vary based on the TV and the settings. Of course the new rules mean only 25 to 30-percent of TVs are expected to be able to meet the standard, but when you see it on a box, it will actually mean something. Punch the read link for the final draft, we're just going to turn some unnecessary lights off.

[Via Crave]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Richard Lawler

Memphis, TN gifted with 3 new HD channels from Comcast

The Memphis area hasn't seen any new HD channels from Comcast since April, so it's about time the carrier did its subscribers there a solid and threw in a few more.
Where you stand on the NFL Network vs Comcast dispute more than likely depends on how much you enjoy sports programming; but no matter how valuable the channel is to you, The NFL Network has a point. The FCC recently agreed that is discriminatory for Comcast to put the NFL Network on a sports tier when at the same time Comcast owned sports networks get to be included on the most valuable basic tiers. We love sports, but we also don't mind paying for them, so we wonder why all the dedicated 24 hour sports networks aren't all on the same tier. Of course all of this will be for not if the rumors about ESPN and the NFL getting together are true.

It's also announcing that beginning this weekend, the network's entire slate of in-house programming will be transitioned to HD. In just a few days, viewers will be able to see the CFL on TSN pre-game show in spectacular high-definition, and in the future, you'll be able to catch NHL on TSN, TSN The Reporters with Dave Hodge, Raptors on TSN and In This Corner with Russ Anber -- all in HD. When this is complete, nearly 75% of everything the channel airs will be in high-def, though there's no telling when that final quarter will be seized.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending October 5th, 2008

What a week for Blu-ray where -- according to Nielsen VideoScan data from Home Media Magazine -- revenues were an all time high and over twice as much as any other week, ever. Looking at the top twenty it's very apparent this was due to Iron Man, which sold like 20 times more copies than any other release. Iron Man was also able to steal 17 percent of the sales from DVD, which is the highest we've seen from any other day-and-date non-boxset release, ever. This is a great start to the fourth quarter for Blu-ray and while next week doesn't have any titles anywhere near as popular as Iron Man, it does have a wider array that will appeal to a broader audience. This combined with the historical tread that shows that home media sales are up during poor economic times, should make for a very Blu Christmas.

Thanks to a recent realignment, a few analog channels have been moved to the digital tier, which will not only mean more expense for those currently operating sans a digital STB, but freed bandwidth that can be used for new high-definition channels. According to Lisa Washa, Charter's vice president and general manager, the "number one request it gets from customers is for more HD channels," though judging by CTO Marwan Fawaz's comments, you'd think the carrier just wasn't listening. At any rate, you Fond du Lac customers can look forward to an undisclosed amount of new HD options "later this month."

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

JVC shows off 8k x 4k D-ILA projector, asks when SHV is dropping by

Filed under: Displays, JVC, LCoS, Projector

Think 4k x 2k is intense? Get a load of this. At CEATEC 2008, JVC is once again proving its mastery of the projector art form by showcasing a somewhat ridiculous 8k x 4k beamer. The prototype device boasts a native resolution of 8,192 x 4,320 and packs a dynamic contrast ratio of 1,100,000:1. In case you couldn't guess, its purpose is to display Super High Vision material in all of its natural glory, though only time will tell when that content (and this machine) are widely available to enjoy.

[Via AboutProjectors]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Verizon's FiOS TV expansions: October 11, 2008

Verizon's making up for lost time this week. Last Saturday, we realized it had gone the entire week without stretching its FiOS TV footprint any further, but the same can't be said today. In addition to bringing its fiber-based services to apartment buildings in Yonkers, NY, the outfit has either gone live with or nailed down cable franchises in a smattering of new locales. For starters, FiOS TV is now available to even more communities in Los Angeles and Orange County (CA), while the villages of Cove Neck and Brightwaters on Long Island (NY) granted the provider the all-important franchise agreement. Expansion efforts were also seen in six new New Jersey cities; Hudson, Massachusetts; Bel Air, Maryland; and Chesapeake / Portsmouth / Virginia Beach, Virginia. We'll see you next week -- here's to hoping your neck of the woods gets covered within the next seven days.

Read - California expansion
Read - Long Island, NY expansion
Read - New Jersey expansion
Read - Massachusetts expansion
Read - Maryland expansion
Read - Virginia expansion

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Boondock Saints gets Blu-ray release date, can you say Veritas Aequitas?

It's not often that we get jazzed enough to leap from our seats about a particular Blu-ray release, but we're brimming with excitement over this one. The 1999 cult classic Boondock Saints will be arriving well before Saint Patty's Day 2009 in high-def, as Fox Home Entertainment has selected January 13th as the launch date for the Blu-ray edition. As for extras, you can look forward to a feature audio commentary by writer / director Troy Duffy, another by Billy Connolly, deleted scenes, outtakes, case and crew filmographies and a printable script. The film itself will be presented in a 1080p / AVC MPEG-4 transfer on a BD-50, and as for audio, it'll have a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless track. MSRP is set at $34.95 -- liberating, isn't it?

[Via HighDefDigest, image courtesy of MyFreeWallpapers]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Sony's $400 Profile 2.0 BDP-S550 Blu-ray player now shipping

Now that Sony's BDP-S350 is all taken care of with that BD-Live-enabling update, the focus shifts to its mightier sibling. Not that this curious scenario hasn't happened before with 007 films, but a full month and change before Daniel Craig wows audiences again as James Bond, we already know when said film will be waiting for us on store shelves. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Spain has reportedly confirmed that the DVD and Blu-ray release of Quantum of Solace will happen in March of 2009, though an exact date has yet to be chosen. Eager to live in the fantastical future it has prophesied, NTT DoCoMo went to CEATEC and demoed an upcoming addition to its Pocket U service: MH2H (Mobile Home to Home), which gives you the ability use your cellphone to stream content from your computer at home to a friend's TV. The phone connects to your friend's WiFi network and sends his or her DLNA-compliant receiver the IP address of your also-DLNA-compliant server, then tells said server to accept the connection and start streaming any videos, songs, or photos you feel like sharing. When you leave, the connection ends and every one goes back to partying on their own isolated media islands like it's 2006.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Samuel Axon

HDTV Listings for October 10, 2008

Filed under: CBS, The CW, Discovery-HD, ESPN-HD, Fox, Listings
What we're watching tonight:
And to think, most of you probably had no idea that these two were even having issues. After Paramount's parent company, Viacom Inc., acquired DreamWorks in 2006 for $1.6 billion, things were never exactly pleasant. Now, the two have finally hammered out a deal that will enable them to part ways and retain "joint custody," if you will, of around 40 movie projects. Where do things go from here? Spielberg and his team of executives are out to form an "independent studio backed by one of India's biggest conglomerates, Reliance ADA Group, which plans to invest $550 million for a 50% stake." Under the settlement, Spielberg's new firm (which will still go by DreamWorks) will take the lead on upwards of 20 film projects currently owned by Paramount. With Panasonic's Profile 2.0 DMP-BD55 Blu-ray player sliding in at $399 (and the BD35 at $299), Panny had to do something with that inflated sticker hanging on its DMP-BD30. When it originally launched back in October of last year, it was one of the fancier decks we'd seen -- evidenced by the $500 price tag. Today, said unit can be had for $259.99 (with free shipping to boot). We know, this is just the natural downward spiral of prices on aged units, but honestly, we think it's more than that. We think the time for lower BD player prices across the board is upon us, and we suspect that'll be magnified on the day after Thanksgiving. Call it a hunch (really, it's a hunch), but we reckon $300 for a Blu-ray player will seem outrageous by Q1 of 2009.

[Thanks, Jason]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

LCDs switching to cheaper, lower quality white LED backlights

Filed under: Displays, LG, Samsung, Sharp, LCD
In the year 2009....LED-backlit LCDs will probably be increasingly common, and why not? Everyone wants a flat panel with questionably-measured contrast ratios full of so many zeroes they run off the spec sheet. but in order to bring the tech to the masses, Digitimes reports manufacturers may switch from current red/green/blue LEDs to white LEDs.They claim white LEDs meet the mark in terms of power savings, but won't measure up when it comes to accurate color reproduction. Victor Matsuda, Chairman of the BDA Global Promotions Committee, was recently quoted as saying that "[the BDA] has good reason to predict that this Q4 sales period will see the Blu-ray Disc revolution take hold in US mainstream markets and [that it] will witness strong sales performance in every other geographical region." Comically enough, he also stated that "the availability of affordable players is an important factor," which contrasts pretty starkly with comments made by the BDA just weeks ago. If you've been waiting (and waiting) for a few more value-added features to hit U-verse TV, you're in luck. Assuming you're located in Atlanta, Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Indianapolis or San Diego, that is. AT&T and AccuWeather.com have jointly launched a weather on demand feature in the aforementioned cities, and there are plans in place to spread it across the entire U-verse network by 2009. Just as it sounds, users will be able to use Weather On Demand in order to fetch the latest forecast at the press of a button, and of course, it's completely free.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

TiVo soliciting beta testers for "Hawk" Series3 / TiVo HD software update

Filed under: DVRs, Set-top boxes, Others

Generally, we'd say it's hard to tell what TiVo has up its sleeve with this newfangled "Hawk" software, but given that we already took a peek at what's potentially the next big TiVo interface late last month, we can't help but think the two are related. TiVo has been sending out solicitation e-mails to select Series3 / TiVo HD owners in order to enlist them in a beta program to test out a software release slated for launch sometime this fall. Users are being asked to deal with a few quirks and report them in a timely fashion, and they're promised a small parting gift for their participation. Of note, "Hawk" won't work with Series1 / Series2 boxes, and while "fall" is definitely mentioned, so is the word "December." Meaning? Don't get your hopes up that this release will be headed down the pipes in gold fashion anytime soon.

[Thanks, NotMe]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Blue Man Group fittingly makes Blu-ray debut on Rhino Entertainment

Oh c'mon, you always knew Blue Man Group would never side with red, didn't you? Months after the format war ended, the famed group is finally making its Blu-ray debut on Rhino Entertainment, which, coincidentally, is also making its Blu debut. On November 4th, the Blu-ray version of How to be a Megastar Tour 2.0 will hit shelves, with bonus features including a music video, a parody called "Mono Makes a Plea - Save the TVs," a how-to manual (saywha?), and the Blue Man Group documentary Inside the Tube. MSRP on this one is expected to be $19.99.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Sony's 52-inch BRAVIA KDL-52XBR6 gets reviewed

Filed under: Reviews, Displays, Sony, LCD

Sony's XBR6 series won over hearts long before they even went up for pre-order, but now that they've begun to filter out, you're probably wondering if the image quality is as stunning as the overall design. The lucky souls over at CNET were able to feast their retinas on this 52-incher for awhile, and when time came to pen the review, they had only a few negative things to say. The only knocks were the high price, intermittent color accuracy issues and below-average screen uniformity, but those downfalls were (generally) overshadowed by the accurate color temperature / decoding, bountiful array of ports and energy efficiency. Moreover, this HDTV produced the "deepest black levels of any non-LED LCD TV" it had ever tested, which is sure to thrill those who like it dark. Unfortunately, the bloated sticker ($3,699) and image quality niggles kept it from snagging a perfect review, but 4 out of 5 ain't bad.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Velocity Micro intros CineMagix FuzeBox Home Media Server

Remember that Velocity Micro FuzeBox that was talked about back in August? As the title implies, Velocity Micro paired with Fuze Media Systems in order to create this here HTPC, which features CableCARD support, multi-zone audio, optional Blu-ray burner, Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, 750GB of storage space, multicard reader, gigabit Ethernet, a whole slew of ports and a FuzeBox MCE remote to boot. Best of all, the system gets going at just $1,995, though speccing it out will get that figure much higher in a hurry.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

DirecTV now carrying HD locals in 100 markets

While DISH Network just recently hit market number 70, DirecTV is throwing itself a party after reaching the big 100. With the addition of Columbia-Jefferson City, Missouri and Evansville, Indiana, the satcaster can now claim to have HD locals available in a hundred US regions. The milestone means that some 83% of the US can now get DirecTV and their HD locals sans an OTA antenna, and if all goes to plan, it'll hit 121 cities by the year's end. We suppose a round of golf claps is in order.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Mitsubishi's 65-inch LaserVue L65-A90 gets evaluated

We'll be frank -- Mitsubishi's 65-inch LaserVue L65-A90 was one of the most stunning things we saw at CEDIA 2008, so we're not surprised to hear that one of the very first production units impressed the lucky folks over at TheTechLounge. Said individuals were able to take a first-hand look at Mitsu's forthcoming beast, and while the situation was obviously optimal for viewing, they couldn't help but praise the TV. The demonstration included two LaserVue sets, one of which was displaying 3D 1080p content from an HTPC and another that was setup beside LCDs for comparison. When staring at the aforesaid comparison setup, critics noted that "color performance on the LaserVue was noticeably more impressive." There's lots more reaction and images where this came from, so delve on into the read if this here set is on your wish list.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Plasma surprisingly gaining ground on LCD?

Filed under: Industry, Displays, LCD, Plasma

Here we are again, smack dab in the crossfire as another plasma versus LCD battle rages on. This time, it's plasma surprisingly on top, with sales of LCD TVs seeming to slow as PDP adoption grows. One may assume that the global economic situation would cause a drop in sales across all platforms, but according to a new report from DisplaySearch, that's hardly the case. In fact, one David Hsieh (VP of DisplaySearch in China) even asserted that "plasma sales are booming while LCD TV sales are beginning to slow." The reason? Low prices. Now more than ever, consumers are able to snatch up big screen PDPs for a remarkably small outlay, and in many cases, comparable PDPs are priced a hair lower than a similar LCD. Of course, we very much expect LCD TVs to be all the rage when prices tank during Black Friday, but it's good see plasma showing signs of life once more. It had us worried there for awhile.

[Thanks, Vanbrothers]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

DISH Network unloads HD locals in a handful of new markets

Of late, it's been DirecTV doing all the dishing of HD locals, but at long last, we've got its biggest, most bitter rival stepping to the plate and doing some damage, too. Beginning today, it will offer television to 62 cities in India, and according to Atul Bindal, president, Bharti Telemedia Services, the outfit will be "aggressively marketing its DTH service by offering superior quality at competitive prices." Additionally, the carrier will be utilizing the MPEG-4 standard with DVB-S2 technology in order to broadcast more content using less bandwidth, making it ripe for HD delivery. Initially, at least, packages will start at Rs.2499 ($52) in northern India and Rs.1499 ($31) in southern India, which includes the price of an STB and installation. There's no high-def content on tap just yet, but we'd be shocked if that's still the case a year from now.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Verizon's FiOS TV coming to Yonkers apartment buildings

Around this time last year, we heard that the FCC was looking to facilitate programming competition for apartments, and apparently, it has succeeded. Just this week, Verizon proudly announced that its FiOS TV programming service was on the way to residents in 2,029 Yonkers public housing apartments. In total, 18 buildings will get gifted with the fiber-based services (TV and high-speed internet), and the carrier has already begun the build-out of the necessary fiber network. There's no word on when or if a similar agreement could take other apartment complexes by storm, but it appears the biggest hurdle has been lifted.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

Iron Man Blu-ray review roundup

Considering that Iron Man is the best selling Blu-ray Disc of all time, it makes sense that there are countless reviews of it out on the web. If you've somehow held back from picking up a copy of your own, you'll be glad to know that pretty much everyone in existence agrees that this film rocks. The most noticeable positive was the absolutely outstanding video transfer, making this flick one you'll undoubtedly pull out when trying to wow your friends with your system's capabilities. Amazingly enough, critics on the whole were even more impressed with the audio, with TweakTown going so far as to say that the sound
