DLPs and LCDs pricy little bulbs {Engadget HD}
May 6th 2006 10:01AM I bought an inFocus 4805 projector last August (2005), it now has 420 hours on it. So I guess that's a bit more than 1 hour/day on average. The bulb life is 3000 hours, so I'm about 1/7 of the way. At this rate, it'll be 5 years? The bulb is around $300 from InFocus.
That's assuming that 3000 hours is accurate. I tend to only watch a single movie on the projector so it gets a lot more power cycles than one that's used continuously. So I may only get 2000 hours, which means that it'll last another 3 years.

Nov 6th 2005 3:09PM For folks who are too lazy to read the original article, the problem isn't the number of vertical pixels (the Magnavox's 768 horizontal pixels is more than 720 pixels required in 720p), the problem is the number of horizontal pixels. With a standard 16:9 screen, the 720p format requires 1280 pixels in a row horizontally. The Magnavox only has 1024 pixels. This means the horizontal resolution must either be squished or that the screen has to be letterboxed in order to show 16:9 content. Sep 6th 2005 12:14AM Thanks for the quick response. The poll is a bit misleading then, since DLP's are only used in projectors (front or rear). So there really shouldn't be a DLP option on the poll. Or, the "projector unit" option should be taken away. I think folks who are using LCD projectors or DLP projectors might accidentally check both.
