New Macs connecting to HDTVs: they just work {Engadget HD}
Mar 6th 2006 3:01PM Great to know. I hope it works the same with an Intel Mac Mini (no reason why it wouldn't). Question about the sound, though. Were you just playing a DVD w/ Dolby 5.1? What about an .avi with AC3 sound or an HD trailer w/ AAC 5.1 from Apples site? This is the last link that I've been waiting to find out about. On my G5 iMac, Quicktime won't pass-thru a Dolby audio stream w/ the optical digital out, but DVD Player will. I don't get it.
iTunes Movie Store? {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Mar 2nd 2006 2:45PM I've never been a fan of subscription based services. I want the freedom to watch a movie whenever I want, as many times as I want. A lot of people only watch a movie once, I'm not one of those people. So for me, the ability to purchase a movie from iTMS is important.
A couple technical things are also important. What will the resolution be? I would hope it's at least DVD res (anything less isn't worth it). HD res would be awesome and the next logical step. Actually, what better way to end the Bluray vs HD-DVD war then by skipping the media altogether? Another issue is sound. I don't know about you, but until Apple updates quicktime to decode Dolby Digital and DTS, the idea of an HTPC is pointless without 3rd party products, and so is the idea of downloading movies that aren't in surround sound.
If Apple starts an iTunes Movie Store where I can buy HD movies in DD sourround and play them using FrontRow with the remote, I'd probably die of excitement. Which is a shame, 'cuase then I wouldn't get to enjoy all that movie goodness.
