HTC Touch HD handled, pre-release style {Engadget Mobile}
Sep 17th 2008 11:23PM This handset looks pretty sweet, actually I think it's got something on the iPhone on the purely cosmetic side of things.
The one thing that WM will probably never equal or surpass the iPhone on is the UI. TouchFLO this or Touch3D or TouchWhatever. I've seen it and it's cool, but it just doesn't have the "Wow" factor of the iPhone.
Plus all the crappy apps one ends up loading on the device are usually developed plain vanilla, and there's no FLO between the cool general UI and your app. It's almost like two different interfaces. Not to mention that a lot of applications are not "resolution aware" and either just don't work, display wrong, or display but cut off certain parts of the app which you can never access.
Win a copy of Devil May Cry 4! {Joystiq Playstation}
Mar 24th 2008 3:10PM I'm gonna say Nero.
But, since I don't know who either of these guys are it's a total guess. Maybe if I get this copy of DMC4 then I can be better informed :-)
Your neighbor's foreclosure may raise your cable rates {Engadget HD}
Mar 10th 2008 3:54PM My HOA has one of these agreements and honestly, it's not a bad thing. $25 of my monthly assessment goes toward basic cable. I only pay $15.99 a month to Comcast for every digital channel offered aside from any premiums, aside from Internet and DVR rental.
We are still free to have dishes if wanted, but the Comcast spigot is on in every unit in our association. Not that I'm a huge proponent of Comcast, but at least it's better than poor quality HD coming down from either of the two satellite providers.
Poll: How many HD channels do you have? {Engadget HD}
Mar 1st 2008 7:22PM I have Comcast out of Romeoville, Il.
I think we get around 11-20, maybe a few more. This isn't counting HBO's and such since I don't get them anymore..
However, there are about 5 or 6 that are worth watching. And fewer than that that offer only HD programming.
AT&T announces eight new HD channels on U-verse {Engadget HD}
Dec 17th 2007 6:47PM This is exciting and all, especially with U-Verse supposedly available here next month (Chicagoland.)
However, I can't even think about switching to U-Verse until they support watching two HD streams into one house. I've got two HD TVs and two dual tuner HD DVRs right now. How often do I watch two HD streams? More often than you'd think. Way more often if I want to DVR something on one channel and watch something on the next.
The one HD stream limitation really sucks. Who the hell cares about a service that is supposed to be so advanced, yet has this huge limitation. Now lets add a few more HD channels so I can pick just ONE to watch in my household at a time.
I hate Comcast, but you have to give me a viable alternative to get me to switch. Come on AT&T.. Get this issue RESOLVED!
iPod Classic hit with endless disk-spinning bug? {Engadget}
Oct 19th 2007 10:08AM I've had an 80G iPod Classic for about 3-4 weeks now, which I bought to replace my 4G 30G iPod Photo (Which still works great by the way, I just wanted the Video capailities and I knew a battery replacement was in the works for the 4G which is to be expected at it's age.)
Originally when I got it it had firmware 1.0.0, and when I first hooked it up to sync with iTunes it updated to 1.0.1. With 1.0.1 it still worked pretty good, however there were some lag issues like everyone was reporting.
Since the update to 1.0.2 it seems to work VERY well. I use my iPod Classic probably every day for at least an hour, sometimes a lot more.
I haven't noticed any abnormal battery discharge, running, poor sound quality, etc.. Honestly, so far, I'm very pleased with my purchase.
How would you change the iPod touch? {Engadget}
Sep 30th 2007 2:19PM I was really excited at the premise of the widescreen video iPod prior to the announcement.
Once the announcement hit, I was totally disappointed. Seriously, why make such a cool device for viewing video on the go, then cripple it by making it only 16G. Hello... Video takes up space.
My 4G iPod Photo has been showing it's signes of age for a little while now so I'd been holding off to buy another iPod until the latest announcement, hoping for the widescreen video iPod. This device sucks.
I carry a Cingular 8525 and my iPod in my briefcase. Once the iPod Touch was announced and proved to disappoint, I tried to load some music onto my 8525 with a 2G SD Card to try and consolidate to one device. That didn't work as it not only didn't really have enough space, Windows Mobile simply sucked at being a media player. It wanted to reindex all the music every time the SD card was inserted, and that took forever. Plus it would constantly freeze when playing music. Not to mention the abysmal battery life. Watching a movie on the device is more of a novelty than a function.
I ended up picking up an 80GB iPod classic on Thursday. I honestly have to say that this device is very cool. It's light years ahead of my 4G iPod photo, and it does everything it does very well. It holds my 16G music library and about 12G of movies / TV shows I have converted since I bought it with plenty of room to breathe. I can't imagine having the Touch and having to choose what movies/music I want to listen to prior, to going on vacation and being limited to only 16G of music/movies combined. The iPod Classic may not have the largest screen, but the screen is bright and has a decent picture for it's size. The new iPod interface is sweet and I have no complaints so far. I also thought that Cover Flow would be useless and a novelty, but it's actually really cool and I use that about as much as I do the conventional artist / album / song search. Others have said the iPod classic is slow, freezes up, not responsive, etc.. I have not experienced any of those issues.
The other beef I have with the iPod touch is it's getting away from the roots of what the iPod is. The iPod is supposed to be a media player. I don't necessarily want half assed PDA features and a web browser. Why complicate the device with a useless PDA (Can't add appointments? No E-Mail?!) and WiFi. WiFi might be useful if it were more prevelent and didn't require a new subscription / hourly fee depending on what coffee shop or mall you happen to be in. For home use, WiFi a mere novelty.
I would have bought the touch had they offered a real storage option. Cupertino still got my money, but on what I feel is a far superior device. The iPod classid does everything it does very well. Maybe in it's next rendition or two when my iPod classic is tired I'll pick up the evolution of the Touch if they finally decide to give it some real storage capacity.

iPod touch first hands-on {Engadget}
Sep 5th 2007 3:18PM Nothing in todays announcements really gets me all fired up. iPod classic is cool, but it's really not worth the upgrade from my 4.5G just yet.
The iPod touch is cool, but who the hell wants a device with all those features that only sports 16GB? I have 16GB of music on my 4.5G Photo now.. Where am I going to put my movies?
I'm sure it will sell like water in the Mojave, but 16GB in a device like this is just plain useless. They should have rolled it with a hard drive, at least 30 or 60GB.
I'll just wait for the 6.5G iPods / 2G Touch devices with larger storage.
