Syntax-Brillian waves the white flag, files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy {Engadget}

Jul 8th 2008 6:47PM So wait, how can you say "there was no mention about them taking on warranties", but then automatically assume they don't? Why would Olevia alienate their customer base? They would be setting themselves up to fail if they didn't take that on, it's not like they really do much warranty work anyway, if you don't register your TV within 30 days, you have to ship your unit in to Olevia for service, it would not be economically feasible to pay shipping both ways for warranty work on a $1000 tv.

Oh, and why would you ever buy stock in Olevia....

Syntax-Brillian waves the white flag, files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy {Engadget}

Jul 8th 2008 3:56PM Olevia is not going under. If you read carefully, it says the parent company is filing for bankruptcy, and a new company named Olevia International Group LLC has picked up 60 million in debt, to carryout the manfacturing. Those 8 employess are of the parent company. I'd bet someone buys them out, which is completely normal especially in a terrible ecomony.

As for people who purchased TV's, the new company is your new contact, until someone buys them out as well.

Band of Brothers Blu-ray box art emerges from fog of war {Engadget HD}

Jul 7th 2008 4:15PM Nfinity - OR, people actually want the series in HD....until now it was only available in HD-DVD, and only in Japanese.

Pioneer's 60-inch KURO PDP-LX6090 plasma gets unboxed {Engadget HD}

Jul 3rd 2008 4:23PM Just because you "downscale" the image, doesn't make it worse. You're going to have the blu ray player send a 1080p image, and have the tv convert it to its native resolution. You are not losing anything by viewing 720p. You are just a sheep that has been herded by blu ray, and most tv manufacturer's. Get whichever set you want, just know that just because you get 1080p, doesn't mean it's a quality image.

Jul 3rd 2008 11:52AM DrXym - again, 1080p ultimately doesn't mean very much. a 720p set from pioneer will look better your samsung, no question about it. The problem is that consumers are driven by hype, and the manufacturer's commercials....which quess what.....are designed to sell product. If you look at the facts, you need a very large image size to see any difference in resolution from the nominal seating position.

Pioneer's 60-inch KURO PDP-LX6090 plasma gets unboxed {Engadget HD}

Jul 3rd 2008 11:34AM Couple things, first, they sell 1080p models. Second, Pioneer can get a 720 native set to look MUCH better than most other's 1080p sets. Why? Because resolution is not the most important factor to image quality. Pioneer knows, and understands, how to accomplish fantastic image quality

Microsoft rumored to be allowing third-party Xbox 360 hardware {Engadget}

Jun 26th 2008 5:38PM Edit: MS is NOW turning a profit

Microsoft rumored to be allowing third-party Xbox 360 hardware {Engadget}

Jun 26th 2008 5:34PM Yeah, the console originally was sold at a loss, but if you knew business you'd realize that the more you manufacture a product, the less it costs. Additionally, MS has used new, less costly chips in the new models, dropping the production cost even further. As it was noted previously, MS is not turning a profit on each console. If MS was to unleash 3rd party hardware, yo'd see more and more issues with playing the new games, it would be a dumb move. The "game changing" announcement will be some overhyped controller, built-in video share, etc

Ask Engadget HD: HD projector or HDTV? {Engadget HD}

May 21st 2008 1:13PM You probably will not have room for a 100"+ screen, nor will you want to purchase replacement lamps at $400+ each. As others have said, unless you can greatly limit the amount of light entering the room, you'll also be disappointed in your projector purchase. Go with a higher end, older model 720p plasma, you can find them on the cheap, have a much better picture than LCD or DLP, and be wall mountable (saving space).
