Verizon to the FCC: We're not down with tru2way {Engadget HD}
Aug 3rd 2008 2:53AM It'll never happen..
The larger cable companies will fight tooth and nail to leave the customer with as little "choice" as possible when it comes to hardware/software options. I'd be happy with whatever software they offer if they would at least invest in upgrading their networking infrastructure to more FTTH like Verizon is doing.
Sadly, even that's too much to ask for -- I predict they'll spend the next decade fighting to inhibit/restrict p2p and anything else that uses any significant amount of their precious bandwidth. Meanwhile, innovation and consumer choice will be long forgotten.
Carmack says iPhone is "more powerful than a Nintendo DS and PSP combined" {Engadget}
Aug 2nd 2008 10:51AM It's absolutely hilarious reading people's comments who talk about Carmack "talking out of his ass" and "not having a clue what he's talking about" -- especially considering that the majority of the posters probably didn't even bother reading the entire keynote address to put the statement into context.
The kids making these comments couldn't keep up for 5 minutes in a technical conversation with Carmack on GPU rendering/development. Ohh..but HE'S the dumbass right?

Planet Earth and 300 are a couple of my favorites for showing on BR. It's nice to see Cars receive that recognition as well though; first time I saw Cars and Ratatouille.. Wow!

Verizon pushing FiOS internet to 50Mbps throughout US {Engadget HD}
Jun 18th 2008 10:25AM Would be nice if they'd focus more on getting FIOS to the greater part of the country before improving the service for the minute minority that is lucky enough to have access to it.
Still waiting here in Atlanta, Verizon.

FTTH network coming to Norway {Engadget HD}
Feb 29th 2008 8:30AM Well said.
Sadly, I don't predict any country will see that kind of massive restructuring of the telecom industries for another decade. I mean, we're finally just now mandating that they switch over to DTV broadcast here in the US..and how long has that been available?
Aside from the few exceptions like Verizon's FIOS, it seems the entire cable industry moves along at a snail's pace. =/
Sony announces BDP-S350, BDP-S550: first new Blu-ray players since the fall of HD DVD {Engadget HD}
Feb 26th 2008 10:01AM @Tim
Err..right, kinda like the premium we pay for making DVD the dominant format? You should be glad HD format prices have dropped as much as they have; thinking you're going to find a BD player at 'mainstream' pricing levels this early in adoption is delusional.
People are too accustomed to seeing the chinese-manufactured $29.99 DVD players on store shelves, and don't want to wait for BD to hit that mass-market level.

Feb 26th 2008 9:47AM Any information if these recievers include the XBL on screen display? The interface on the 5200/5300ES higher end models..
That would truly make the STR-DG920 an incredible value
