Analyst: Publishers not supporting Wii to get left behind {Joystiq}

Dec 28th 2006 2:26PM I think this analysts point is very accurate and clear:

There will be more Wii games sold over the next year than the PS3, so the publishers who make Wii games will have a larger base of users that might purchase their games. Not to mention the fact that the Wii games are much cheaper to make.

The biggest question I have regarding Wii game sales is whether we'll see a DS-like Nintendo-published game dominance.

I'm not sure I'd take this stock analysts opinion about CY 2007 financial performance and extrapolate it to an answer for this gen's console war, but whatever.

EA's Larry Probst on Wii and PSP development {Joystiq}

Dec 1st 2006 11:22AM Even with 10-15% HDTV penetration, what is the true penetration of consoles being played on HDTVs? There are a lot of households that relegate video games to a secondary family/living room location or a bedroom, where a second HDTV is unlikely at this point.

I'm just glad my wife cedes control of the HDTV to me!

Explainer: Wii's push, Xbox 360's pull [update 1] {Joystiq}

Oct 16th 2006 12:11PM One thing we can't see is the amount of marketing funds kicked back to the retailer by each company, which is a HUGE factor in the amount of marketing and placement for each console.

My guess is that Nintendo's is fairly low, with Microsoft in between them and Sony. Looking at the PS2 and PSP placement in both ads and stores, I think Sony lines the retailer's pockets with a lot of temporary increases around launches.

Just look at your local Target--chances are the PS3 will be in the easiest-to-see cabinet, just like the PSP was.

Once you factor in distribution costs (unless MS is doing direct-to-store shipments) and interest on inventory, I'd guess that a lot of retailers are actually losing money on each XB360 they sell.

Why is the games industry failing women? {Joystiq}

Aug 22nd 2006 12:39PM Gotta love comments that basically say "who needs a wider audience? Keep making games for me! F you if you don't like it!"

Yeah, just keep narrowing the focus of the industry, that'll really provide the growth needed to justify huge development budgets.

Ford to eliminate dealers in metro areas {Autoblog}

Aug 14th 2006 9:23AM This is going to get ugly...

Forget how long ago, but Ford was trying to use the Indianapolis market as a test for factory-owned buying and repair centers. Seemed like a great idea but the dealership owners were up in arms in a hurry and squashed the test.

Rockstar pulls plug on Xbox Bully? {Joystiq}

Aug 3rd 2006 9:27PM Microsoft's nearly complete abandonment of the XBox has been disappointing for this XBoxer. But since they lose money on everyone that is sold, it isn't surprising. The only model available most places, the Forza "bundle," is a complete joke.

So who can blame publishers for following MS' lead on ditching the console? It isn't like they're turning their backs on the PS2's huge installed base.

Xbox Live attach rate has grown 50 percent, from Xbox to Xbox 360; Live Anywhere the next step {Joystiq}

Jul 13th 2006 3:47PM Definitely an apples-to-oranges comparison, as others have mentioned.

Another important thing to think about is the demographics of who has bought the 360 at this point. Wouldn't it make sense that the more "hardcore" gamers make up much more of the 360 audience than the original XBox and that they are more likely to hop online?

Preview: New Super Mario Bros. {Joystiq Nintendo}

Apr 5th 2006 9:58PM If the "Godzilla mushrooms" are implemented like the P-Wings from Mario 3, then they shouldn't be a problem.

XBLA chief trash talks Sony and Nintendo's offerings {Joystiq}

Feb 3rd 2006 9:12PM This guy clearly didn't look at any PSP-related message boards after the system's emulation abilities spread...

Seriously, why would Kid Icarus not hold up while Joust does?

IGN: DS Game of the Month (January) {Joystiq Nintendo}

Feb 1st 2006 8:38AM I'll second their True Swing Golf nomination. It captures some of the Golden Tee "easy to play" feel while also providing a decent challenge. There are plenty of well done, albeit fake courses and it seems like the difficulty ramps up like it should.

I wish they added single-DS multiplayer modes like a skins game though.
