Netflix for PlayStation 3 requires a disc, software solution coming late 2010 {Engadget}
Oct 27th 2009 2:26AM I'm very glad I don't have to worry about my Gold subscription ending anymore, but I really want to see an expanded HD offering on the streaming service...Whichever system can bring me more HD through Netflix (yes, I already pay the $2 extra/month for Blu rentals, but I want instant on...) will contribute the most to my monthly electric bill...
SNES / Sega Genesis USB cartridge adapter now available for pre-order {Engadget}
Oct 19th 2009 3:14PM Actually, even better money says he doesn't realize USB didn't exist in 1991, thus rendering these useless to his target market...
New Xbox 360 Elite holiday bundle and Wireless Controller Game Pack announced {Engadget}
Sep 29th 2009 1:53PM Yeah, I think the wireless console is pretty overrated myself. I thought it was funny reading Konami's flowchart for getting Metal Gear Online up and running, every wireless scenario ends in "You really should get a wired connection. It's a lot more stable." I've got my Xbox360 and PS3 wired, and I don't have connectivity problems. Using a Gig-E network is also a much better idea for streaming vids from a media server. I've noticed a lot less lag on the PS3 since going to wired.
Chevy Volt nabs shaky 230 MPG rating, might not ship in 2010 {Engadget}
Aug 12th 2009 1:24AM Uh Yodaman, I think you mean miles per kilowatt-hour or Joule...The Watt is simply a measure of power (instantaneous), not energy... But otherwise I agree.
Xbox Live Update has arrived, everything is going to be alright {Engadget}
Aug 11th 2009 11:08PM For the poor, cash strapped bastards, and/or those who don't enjoy paying to listen to 13 year olds curse in whiny voices, you could always snag a free Live Gold subscription offer. I was actually in both camps for a long time, then I got one from Sam's Club :P
Poll: So how do YOU think Blu-ray is doing? {Engadget HD}
Jun 28th 2009 11:08AM I put HD-DVD 4 LIFE, but it's more a "something else" for me. That something else being the ICT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_Constraint_Token). I don't trust Hollywood enough to say "well, you've promised my equipment will work 'til 2012, that's a good enough reason for me to invest". The whole reason I waited until HD-DVD was kaput to buy it was because I was guaranteed that ICT would never get implemented (since no new content is being made, and no firmware updates given, no worries), and of course there's the fact I get movies for $5 new now :P
If there were some law preventing the use of ICT, then I think I'd be more accepting of Blu. The prices would have to come down to DVD-like prices as well. I'm just not willing to accept a time-bomb of a format (I'm pretty sure the manufacturer of my TV is out of business, so no firmware updates for me if the TV's HDCP key were compromised...)
I also agree with LarryL's comment. I've been on the HD bandwagon since 2006. My folks just bought their first HDTV a couple months ago, and feel that Cox Digital is good enough for them *shudder*. Even my wife is fine watching SD cable (I can't do it, the blurriness kills me) on our 720p set.
Microsoft exits the encyclopedia biz, kills Encarta {Download Squad}
Mar 30th 2009 9:06PM I have to say good riddance. It used to be really good, when it came on CD/DVD. But as the years progressed, I bought the 2003 edition, and half the content I paid $50 was only available if I subscribed to their web edition.
Lenovo stops selling Linux-based PCs via the web {Engadget}
Sep 15th 2008 1:49AM Actually, mine didn't have the option (even though the heading stated that it was pre-loadable w/ SuSE). Did the same thing though.
Psystar to countersue Apple for antitrust violations, will ask court to declare Leopard EULA void {Engadget}
Aug 27th 2008 8:55AM @zedster:
You made me think of something...XCode is built on gcc, not just "linking" to it, which means that gcc should be licensed to them under the GPL, not the LGPL. Apple then proceeds to include XCode with OSX... Which, if I'm not mistaken, means that the GPL would apply to the entire contents of OSX, since XCode is a component of OSX...
Mind you, Psystar really doesn't have a leg to stand on (if they really weren't just ripping off Apple, they should have filed a claim of GPL violation, then stripped out the trademarks, ala CentOS) but it would be great to see OSX up til now GPL'd (especially for those poor bastards using G5's who are going to be shut out of Snow Leopard).
Psystar to countersue Apple for antitrust violations, will ask court to declare Leopard EULA void {Engadget}
Aug 27th 2008 2:12AM Wow bondsbw. I think that is possibly the most well-reasoned, rational and fair argument I've ever seen on this site, and actually makes me feel somewhat agreeable towards EULA's.
