Germany's CDA starts production of 3X DVD {Engadget HD}

Feb 12th 2008 7:58PM @aplen22

"- Use the less expensive laser that HD DVD uses to keep costs down"

Where does this info come from? HD DVD uses the same laser as Blu ray! The only thing that makes HD DVD cheaper is the fact of the physical properties. HD DVD is similar to DVD because of where the disc substrait is (ie, the reading layer is in the middle of the disc) as opposed to Blu ray where the substrait is at the bottom edge of the disc.

"- Use HDi instead of BD-Java because it's less complex to code and far more superior."

HDi is not a superior code and everyone knows that. More companies use Java because its a flexable code. The only reason why HD DVD is using HDi and touting it as superior is because Microsoft created it! Microsoft doesnt want Java to be mandatory in the future, because it will intrude on "their" coding territory namely Windows!

"At this particular point in time, we've been able to supply more features with HDi and HD DVD than with BD-Java and Blu-ray Disc. But that has not been entirely possible: Some things we can do in HDi are not supported in BD-Java. If you're going to do BD-Java, you need someone who's capable of programming at a low level. With HDi, you don't need somebody with that additional level of training. We don't need programmers to code our discs."

Well you are correct on the whole "...able to supply more features" but thats because BD-Java wasnt implemented! Thats like having a competition with yourself! I would like to see the competition outcome now! The whole "Some things we can do in HDi are not supported in BD-Java," thats bull! the only thing that would make that true is the fact that they are different in code thats all. "With HDi, you don't need somebody with that additional level of training." Well that can be taken both ways. One being that it takes more time in developement, or as I see it, it shows and exploits the most out of the capabilites when additional training is used, instead of having just another DVD with HD content.

Toshiba's Super Bowl 2008 ad: the final act of desperation? {Engadget}

Feb 3rd 2008 11:25PM What the hell you talkin about yeah some of those movies will be exclusive to HD-DVD but apparently you dont have any "common" knowledge that everyone knows. Indie 4 is directed by who? Spielberg, so no Indie 4 on HD-DVD and Star Wars is distributed by who? FOX! As for the Matrix Trilogy they're HD-DVD exclusive until May or until Warner makes it on Blu-ray.

Toshiba planning to undercut Blu-ray, snip MSRP of HD DVD titles {Engadget HD}

Dec 11th 2007 8:31PM A $2 price cut doesnt merit being hard to stay Blu. HD-DVD really needs to come up wit something other than a price cut of $2. And plus who pays retail price any way like the article says!

DVD Forum approves 51GB triple-layer HD DVD spec {Engadget HD}

Nov 16th 2007 2:41PM Didnt anyone notice that this article is from September! The same time that HD DVD had announced that they were trying to get it approved. This isnt new news, except the fact that it was announced at the time not "APPROVED" like the article says

Rock making HD DVD standard on select laptops {Engadget HD}

Oct 4th 2007 8:06AM (enter sarcasm) WOW a company that has HD-DVD as a standard! But wait! Its by a european company that no one has even heard of or bought in the U.S.

The Wall Street Journal talks format war {Engadget HD}

Sep 26th 2007 6:39PM This is all funny. Blu-ray/HD-DVD fanboys all tout all these things like Blu-ray/HD-DVD is a FUD, HD-DVD is cheaper, Sony Betamax = Blu-ray, etc. But everyone should take notice that while websites post "Blu-ray is ahead on discs sold" or "HD-DVD is selling more hardware," that there are more companies marketing and creating more Blu-ray players than HD-DVD players. Almost every 2 weeks there is a new player for Blu-ray. Toshiba is the only company that produces HD-DVD players. While Samsung and LG produce Dual Format Players. Even if HD-DVD was winning and Blu-ray was losing, wouldn't companies think "Hey why are we promoting and coming out with more Blu-ray players when HD-DVD is winning?"

I tell you why, its because they know the numbers more than anyone or any website and they are pouring money into an investment that they see is worth it. Companies wont go blindedly into something new unless its the company pioneering it.

Even when your not including Sony and their 6 players and PS3, there are MORE companies that have MORE models on Blu-ray than on HD-DVD or dual format players.

Has Blu-ray already lost? {Engadget HD}

Aug 28th 2007 6:46PM "At the risk of sounding extreme, here are a few analogies:

HD DVD : BluRay :: VHS : Betamax
HD DVD : BluRay :: iPod : Minidisc
HD DVD : BluRay :: .mp3 : .atrac
HD DVD : BluRay :: .mp3 : SACD
HD DVD : BluRay :: DVD : UMD
HD DVD : BluRay :: CF : memory stick

...look at the track record, you figure it out. Some may not completely fail, but they sure as hell don't "win out"

Wow someone needs to get educated ("Cam").
Yes VHS won over Betamax
and .mp3 won over .atrac
but...

-MiniDisc came out in 1992, Way before Ipod was even thought of to even compete!

-SACD was supposed to be the next step after CD for music, never was it in competition over MP3's

-UMD was a format for the PSP not as a replacement over DVD

-And Memory Stick is more alive and well then CF, and actually the majority of the market has SD and Memory Stick as options, NOT CF

Get your facts straight. Im not saying that Blu-ray will win (hopefully it does) but the "facts" that you posted are out of context. HD-DVD is kinda like Betamax was to VHS. Sony made the Betamax and made it a "closed" format to everyone but themselves. Now learning from their mistake they took the industry into account and made a format that everyone will benefit from. Now Toshiba is the one with a format that is "closed" in a sense. Its still open to the industry, but it doesnt improve from the format its supposed to replace, besides storage space.

Hands-on: the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive {Joystiq}

Nov 13th 2006 8:35AM To #17 - Blu-Ray is a NOT a Sony standard. HD-DVD is approved by the DVD Forum, does anybody know why?.... Because the head of the DVD forum is Toshiba, which if you didnt know is also head of HD-DVD. Toshiba gets practically most of the royalties when a DVD is made and will be true again for HD-DVD. Sony on the other hand created Blu-Ray with other manufactures and place them on the Blu-ray board so that royalties are distributed equal between board members, not just creator.

Oh and by the way Im not a Sony fanboy, just a person who knows the facts
