Samsung's IFA lineup of HDTVs emerges {Engadget HD}
Jul 18th 2008 12:24PM Hmm, I'm wondering if that is a typo on the site, because the 7 series LCD is already out and it jumps from 7 to 9. It looks like the A780 was supposed to be the A850 because it seems doubtful that they would jump to localized led dimming on a partial series upgrade. Also, it seems odd that there is no upgrade from the (presumably) A780 to the A950 shown other than a color change.
Best Buy accounts for most Blu-ray purchases, but Amazon and Wal-mart are catching up {Engadget HD}
Jul 10th 2008 12:07PM I'll buy from Best Buy only when they are having deals going on. The 2 for $30 deal actually had some good movies and I picked up a couple, but other than that, they usually have terrible prices. I'm a sucker for movies that are priced abnormally low. That's what had me buy I Am Legend off of Amazon when it was $19 and everyone else had it for $25+ and why I bought Cloverfield for $17 the other day. Sometimes I think I even buy movies not intending on ever watching them. Hopefully, this holiday season we will see a return on some of those BOGO deals for Blu-Ray because BTGO just isn't a good enough of a deal.
Gangs of New York Blu-ray transfer not up to snuff? {Engadget HD}
Jul 8th 2008 11:25AM At least so far movies with really bad transfers have been remastered and then an exchange program was used.
Customers getting quicker to return flawed HDTVs? {Engadget HD}
Jun 23rd 2008 10:57AM I don't know. There are still a lot of people that read the Consumer Reports reviews and come into stores thinking that Vizios are the best TVs you can get. Most people also don't understand that there is a huge difference between what you see on the sales floor and what you see in your house after calibration and proper lighting. What I see as being the more likely thing to happen is that Vizio changes its strategy to create premium TVs. The only way I see brands like Samsung and Sony choking out Vizio is if the market drives prices low enough that the premium price on them no longer becomes a factor. Well, that and possibly quicker development in the OLED department than expected.
Sony's 46-inch KDL-46W4100 LCD HDTV gets reviewed {Engadget HD}
Jun 8th 2008 1:03AM I always tell people about the viewing angles. I also tell them that they have been greatly improved and to look at the tv in the angles that people will be viewing it in your house to see if the viewing angle is acceptable. For most LCDs now, the picture quality doesn't change dramatically with off angle viewing other than the picture being a little darker and for most of the people that would be viewing off angle, the change is not noticeable because most of the people that would be bothered by the viewing angle issue are people who have set ups that are designed to give a good viewing angle.
Warner to release a Blu-ray title before it's available on DVD {Engadget HD}
Apr 23rd 2008 7:27PM I'm really surprised that no one had done this earlier, especially Sony. Really, Sony would have been the company that we would have expected this from because it is the only studio that really had a deep seated interest in which format won. The only problem is that this is going to cause some consumer confusion when people think that the movie is out but then find out that it is only out on Blu-Ray. That, and I wouldn't be too surprised to see some retailers put the DVD out a week early and get hit with heavy fines.
PS3 video service to use open standards? {Engadget HD}
Apr 22nd 2008 6:31PM I wouldn't be surprised if this just ends up meaning that the videos will work on the PSP...not that that would be a bad thing.
Warner to finally bring V for Vendetta to Blu-ray {Engadget HD}
Mar 31st 2008 9:23PM At least they didn't make everyone wait for the fifth of November.
PS3 2.20 update to offer portable copy of Blu-ray films to PSP? {Engadget HD}
Mar 24th 2008 12:57PM The thing I'm more interested in is whether or not you'll be able to copy the files to the PS3 and then use remote play to access the file. Sure, the streaming of the movie probably won't be as great, but having at least 20GB of space as opposed to for most people 1 or 2GB would be a great plus. Then I wouldn't have to pick what movie I think I'm going to be in the mood for in advance if I'm going somewhere with wi-fi.
The quest for a DTV converter box {Engadget HD}
Mar 18th 2008 3:15PM The registers at Wal-Mart don't even let you use two of them in the same transaction. You have to make two separate transactions, even if you are buying two boxes.
