WarGames returns to theaters via digital distribution & projection network {Engadget HD}

Jul 9th 2008 7:21AM "A strange game. The only winning move is not to play."

That line alone makes this a classic. We all knew global thermonuclear war wouldn't actually happen in the film, but it did a fine job of taking you to the brink. I wonder if Reagan and Gorbachev ever watched it.

VIZIO intros XVT Series of 1080p LCDs / plasmas {Engadget HD}

Jun 25th 2008 10:39AM Question for you true videophiles out there: Why do plasma TV manufacturers even bother listing the contrast ratio? Since they're based on CRT technology, which I understand to have an "infinite" contrast ratio, I've always thought the numbers game was only relevant for LCDs.

Any clarification would be helpful. I'm thinking of going back to plasma because I miss the picture I used to get with tube HDTVs.

Samsung first on the block with 240Hz LCD prototype, 100% better motion, wavier hair {Engadget HD}

May 15th 2008 2:53PM Isn't there a limit to what the human eye can percieve anyway, in terms of fast-moviing activity/objects? I thought I read somewhere that it tops off at 60 Hz. If someone knows for sure, that would be great, because the latest 120 Hz Samsung looked smooth enough in the store for me if I ever decided to get one (though it didn't look like traditional film). I just don't feel like sifting through tons of Google-ized misinformation.

vmcNetFlix add-in enables Xbox 360 viewing of Netflix 'Watch Now' content {Engadget HD}

May 15th 2008 2:26PM Thanks, Mike and Stephen for your helpful and intelligent responses. I don't have the space for another PC, but I suppose I could get a dedicated router.

Incidentally, I finally get quicker response times when surfing Media Center on the 360. Not sure exactly what I did, but the lag is gone. The only problem now, though, is that it doesn't recognize the Xvid files I have stored on my PC. Adding insult to injury, my PS3 used to be able to see and play these files, but now I get this "No media servers were detected" message each time I search, which makes no sense. And yes, I have it enabled in the XMB.

I'm afraid correcting one will negate the other, but if I have to choose, I'd much rather have PS3 wireless connectivity. It's interface is much smoother and intuitive. Um...help once again? Anyone?

vmcNetFlix add-in enables Xbox 360 viewing of Netflix 'Watch Now' content {Engadget HD}

May 13th 2008 12:20PM Can someone explain why---despite my best efforts---the connection betwen my Xbox 360 Media Extender and my PC is so weak? My Live connection speeds are usually excellent (thanks to the latest Linksys Router); I can download a 1GB+ file in under 30 minutes when the network isn't clogged. But navigating throught the extender on the 360 is like wading through quicksand with cement shoes. I haven't gotten it to work correctly once, so I can forget about streaming NetFlix movies unless there's a fix I'm unaware of.

BTW, my PS3 has no trouble streaming/copying downloaded movies from my hard drive...when it decides to actually SEE my PC, ha ha! Any help will be much appreciated.

Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending April 20th, 2008 {Engadget HD}

Apr 28th 2008 11:26AM If it's slick, bloody, and appeals to 14-year-olds, chances are very good that it'll hit #1. And who has more discretionary income than them or their parents these days, gas prices notwithstanding?

That said, I enjoyed it, but not nearly as much as Transformers, warts and all.

Analyst: PS3 to lead Blu-ray installed base until 2013 {Engadget HD}

Apr 23rd 2008 7:41AM @ loosely

I would avoid calling anyone a retard when it comes to upconversion.
Way before HD DVD and Blu-ray came along, I had an LG upconverter
that was all the rage on the forums. It was one of few players that
enabled 720p/1080i over component (as long as you stuck with the
original firmware), and suddenly my DVD collection looked "magical"
to my eyes.

If I had a 1080p-capable display back in 2003, paired with an
HDMI-only upconverter from Oppo for 100 bucks, I would've easily
bought more DVDs and been done with it. That's what Joe Consumer is
doing now, and our economy isn't exactly casting a $600-$1200 Blu-ray
player in the best light right now.

FYI, it's "take a poll at work," unless readers want to do bodily harm to those who disagree with their answers, LOL.
