Neothings LightSpider takes HDMI signals 300 feet over fiber {Engadget}

Mar 10th 2009 4:00PM From what I understand, the Gefen unit uses the fiber in the forward direction only, and uses an additional Cat5 for the bidirectional low speed data. Neothing's does it all on one fiber, and plans to do usb, ethernet, etc. in the future.

FUZE unveils whole-home media system {Engadget}

Aug 16th 2007 9:43AM There are pricing details and tons more info on the product at cedianews.com. The product is actually a Media Center PC, although Fuze goes out of the way to say "it is not a Media Center." Key thing about it is that it is built from the ground up to distribute music throughout the house -- something that really is novel. http://www.cepro.com/article/fuze_may_have_first_media_center_built_specifically_for_whole_house_audio/

Will TiVo be replaced by Media Center PCs {PVR Wire}

Oct 26th 2006 3:41PM Actually, the point of the story wasn't really if MCE would obsolete the Tivo (no time soon, I don't think). There were two other gists: TiVo isn't immune from hiccups -- you know, that nasty IR problem of mine, and yes I've had to reboot on occasion-- but the real takeaway from the story is this: If you want cheaper tivo service, just ask for it. I threatened to cancel because of my MCE, and they dropped the price to $6.95. I hear comcast is doing something similar when Verizon Fios comes to town. Threaten to switch and Comcast will give you a year or two for free.

Exceptional Innovation shows off Media Center distributed audio {Engadget}

Mar 27th 2006 9:14PM well, this blog is slightly off. This touchscreen is not inexpensive. the key new innovation is that lifeware is enabling two-way control via inexpensive distributed audio systems (not pictured!). The caption from my original blog reads like this:

It's one thing to enable feedback and control via costly toucshcreens, as Exceptional Innovation has demonstrated in the past. It's another thing to enable inexpensive third-party keypads to display metadata from an MCE, and enable users to control their PC-based content right from the keypad. That's what EI will show at EHX.

Simplay HD certification {Engadget HD}

Feb 20th 2006 2:55PM New Simplay Designation Means HDMI REALLY Works
By Julie Jacobson, Feb 20 2006
Just because it says HDMI on the front panel doesn't mean a DVD player or other source will actually get its content all the way through to the display, thanks in part to the often-misapplied EEDID communications protocol. The HDMI folks, with the new Simplay HD designation, are requiring that manufacturers get EEDID right.

Think the Xbox 360 doesn't fit in with your home theater? Think again {Engadget HD}

Feb 18th 2006 8:02AM Back end is wide open, so no ventilation problems. Too bad xbox doesn't come in a rack-mount form factor -- they could raise the price and sell a lot more to the ce channel.
