Verizon to push FiOS TV in Massachusetts furniture store {Engadget HD}

Feb 25th 2008 10:05AM Yeah, it was the Comcast IMAX theater until about a year ago. This store is only a couple exits down the highway from my office. I'll go check it out and post some pics if anyone is interested.

Feb 6th 2008 12:44PM What a wicked offer! I'd love one of these.

Dear Customer, Have Some Ads. Love, Comcast {PVR Wire}

Dec 11th 2006 12:44PM If that's the price of having the HD Yule Log On Demand, I guess I'll take it.

I'm in the Boston area and noticed these ads showing up on Friday, I think. All the more reason to keep watching stuff on XBMC.

Product Placement: the anti-TiVo? {PVR Wire}

Nov 29th 2006 5:40PM I love the Apple product placement in Studio 60. Everyone uses MacBooks and I think Jordan at one point said "I love my iPod." It may have been part of The Option Period episode where they were discussing product placement, but they have always used MacBooks.

What's keeping you from using Windows Media Center Edition? {PVR Wire}

Nov 15th 2006 5:25PM 1. It's Windows. I pride myself on maintaining a Windows-free environment at home.
2. My Comcast DVR is good enough for my DVR needs. Most of my media legwork is done by my file server + Usenet + Xbox Media Center.
3. I like not owning the equipment. DVR functionality is very hard drive intensive, especially if you leave it on all the time. I'm happy to pay $17 per month per box and know that if it breaks, Comcast will give me a new one.
4. "It just works." Component, optical, HDMI, other stuff, whatever. It all works.

For me to build a DVR, it would have to be vastly better than my Comcast box and pain-free and inexpensive to setup. There's nothing out there that fits the bill, really.

There's plenty to complain about with the Comcast box, but it's good enough.

Art-on-demand for your HDTV {PVR Wire}

Nov 13th 2006 12:53PM Very cool! I can't wait to get home and try this out. I hope it doesn't cause any burn-in problems on plasmas.

Nielsen: most PVR users watch recorded shows within three days {PVR Wire}

Nov 10th 2006 10:57AM I know how you feel about avoiding recaps of old episodes. I didn't watch 24 last season until it was over so I could have a marathon. One day I was checking out TVs at Best Buy and on all of the TVs they started showing some 24 clips they from lots of the previously aired episodes. I briskly exited the store.

(Video) Tutorial on how to save a YouTube video to your PC {PVR Wire}

Oct 27th 2006 9:51AM For those of us that don't use Windows, ffmpeg can convert from flv.

This is more or less what I use to encode videos for playback on my phone.

ffmpeg -i source_file.flv -s 320x240 -r 25 -vcodec xvid -g 50 -b 320 -async 50 -acodec aac -ar 44100 -ac 2 -ab 128 your_new_video.mp4

Here's the full run-down of my video encoding stuff if anyone is interested

Hands-on with the Sony Ericsson Z710i {Engadget Mobile}

Oct 23rd 2006 10:36AM #3 - I couldn't agree more. Even though it has long since been supplanted by a K750 and a K790i, I sitll love my Z/V800. If they could make another one with the screen and software of the K790/K800, I'd be all over it. They need not change anything else.
