Ask Engadget HD: Is it (still) a good time to buy a TiVo? {Engadget HD}

Nov 2nd 2009 11:01AM For the SDV issue, TiVo officially supports the use of "tuning resolvers" (basically a USB device that does the upstream end of channel changing the way the cable companies' units do) that solve this.

Nov 2nd 2009 10:57AM You can also get an eSATA expansion drive (WD "MyDVR" 500GB & 1TB) for S3 & TiVoHD for pretty cheap, to get more storage for your unit.

US government lays out cash for wall-based, in-home 'smart meters' {Engadget}

Oct 27th 2009 5:13PM While the snarkiness of the original post is notable, it's worth pointing out that "telling people to just turn off stuff when they aren't using it" is not of lasting value.

Without getting political about the costs of implementing this, the point is to draw attention to people's ACTUAL use by monitoring it, and doing appropriate things to /reduce/ one's own energy bills (as well as conserve energy in general). Without the reinforcement of units like these, a lot of people just do "whatever" and don't pay any attention to their actual energy use. I would go farther and say to people "Look at what you'll be able to do with the money you saved from energy efficiency". Kinda like the Geico "Money staring at you" commercials.

Oct 22nd 2009 1:22PM Uh, but they're completely different styles of games. If you have a specific budget for gaming, I understand. But the games are totally different experiences. New SMB Wii for me will probably be about the co-op.

Blockbuster On Demand goes live on TiVo boxes {Engadget}

Oct 13th 2009 3:15PM The S2s can't handle Netflix / YouTube etc. because they have older video-decoding hardware that doesn't decode H.264 that used by these new services. The processor can't software-decode, so there is a very legitimate reason for the new hardware not to handle them that has nothing to do with "leaving S2s out in the cold".

Peek Pronto with lifetime service: $299 {Engadget}

Sep 28th 2009 6:29PM TiVo Series 1s still get data, but no more software updates. There's a difference between "support forever" and "it still works".

Gadget lifetimes tend to be quite short, and a device like a Peek probably has a shorter lifetime than your average TiVo.

Wacom's Bamboo Pen & Touch unboxed and previewed {Engadget}

Sep 27th 2009 4:41AM Are you intimating that Wacom isn't doing a good job supporting hardware from 15 years ago? Okay. Interfaces have changed considerably in that time. USB was revolutionary for peripherals.

I have virtually NO hardware from that era that is still supported, except maybe a PC keyboard. Complaints about a 1995 tablet are pretty absurd, IMO.
