The $500 Playstation 3 is missing something...like HDMI, WiFi and Memory card reader. {Engadget HD}
May 9th 2006 9:50AM Well forget about the dual HDMI ports, I can live with the resource limitation, but not at all included on the 'basic' model? It's not like I can go out & buy a HDMI add-on port (Obviously, i won't be buying the basic one).
Anywho, at zombieflanders, maybe 'Philips' is older than us (or didn't grow up on games) so even a 30 year old is a kid to him. ;)
So called technology experts {Engadget HD}
May 3rd 2006 11:10AM How many times have I heard a Podcast (tech-related) that had wrong information in it, only to hear it corrected in the next Podcast? Plenty. Even the "experts" make mistakes. Give the guy until his next Podcast (at least) to correct them.
ABI Research predicts HD-DVD to keep lead this year. {Engadget HD}
Apr 21st 2006 10:40AM Enough with the PS3 comments.. Yes the PS3 will sell, and yes (according to Sony) it will have a BR drive. This will not determine the end of the war, IMO. Since most of these WILL be hook up to analog TVs, these people won't spend $30 on a movie that they can get for $15 or less or free thru some channels.

Take it with a grain of salt(I assume you're talking about the Alias comment). If you're a fan, you should enjoy the episode.
Why HD DVD will prevail: my opinion {Engadget HD}
Apr 20th 2006 6:08PM Uh.. Ben, I did mention content in post #18 (it wasn't as cut and dry as Sean though). Sure the most content will win, but that won't mean they both won't exist for a long while.
If HD takes off, this won't derail the PS3 sales by any means. So HD can have all the content (except Sony) from the first Holiday season. Sony will not be re-releasing an HD (or HD/BR) PS3, so they still will sell their BR movies like there's no tomorrow. Sony won't bend for years IMO... and by bend I mean start manufacturing HD discs.

"Another thing that goes in Blu-Ray's favour is its made by 'SONY' - a brand that everyone associates with superior quality."
Not everyone dude, that's a bad statement. Sony, is a name that (maybe) everyone KNOWS, but NOT associates with SUPERIOR quality...

"They sell movies on VHS don't they?? Sony is around to make money... if HD-DVD is much more popular than Blu-Ray you WILL see Sony movies on HD-DVD."
No sh*t... I guess that's why Sony has finally gotten around to native MP3 support on their MP3/MiniDisc players. Sure they'll come around because they want to make money.. but it'll be a LOOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGGGGGG time coming before they do.
Why HD DVD will prevail: my opinion {Engadget HD}
Apr 19th 2006 3:02PM 1. Price
Irrelevant, if comparing initial prices. This will be a race to the $100 player (for the public). HD-DVD might get there first, but who knows.
2. Perception
Tipster:
Yes, HDDVD makes more sense than Blu-Ray to the consumer.
What Im saying is that perception can go many ways.
Yes indeed perception can go many ways. And I think most of the non-tech public thinks alike (my perception). I think the public will associate HDDVD for the most part based on the name alone. Well see. Did D-VHS sound like VHS 1.5 to you too?
Consider "HD Radio" vs. XM or Sirius Satellite Radio ... which one sounds like the better technology
HD Radio sounds like better tech to me (my perception). Someone hears the very mention of satellite and may think thats crap, because they cant even get satellite at home, so that may not work for them. Theres that perception thing again. These shouldnt be compared since HD Radio is free after the equipment costs and is very rarely installed in new vehicles like its satellite counterparts. True the variety isnt there, but you get what you (dont) pay for.
3. Head Start
True DC was out first, but it REALLY shot itself in the foot by not having a DVD player, IMO. Also, the PS1 was riding high in 2000, so a lot people waited the arrival of the PS2 and all its promises (and slept on the DC). Why not wait to get a 2 for 1 with a game console and movie player? Headstart is key is irrelevant, since the time different between the two rival formats is not a year or so, but a matter of weeks. Also, the PS3 will be the only nextgen console with a nextgen player built-in (please correct me if Im wrong). BR will saturate the market in terms of number of players.
Im doubting every PS3 owner (or even half of them) will be playing their system on a HDTV (with HD cables), so to them a movie is a movie and if said movie can be shared, downloaded, borrowed and copied (ahem, DVD) then I dont see them buying too much software. To them, the BR player may seems like a bonus that they may never get to fully appreciate.
4: The PC Market
Im that guy that youre talking about. But this will depend on price of blank media and drives for me.
5. Content
Everyone and their momma knows Sony (and its studios) will never(?) release a movie on HD-DVD. So heres how it goes.. If HD-DVD does catch on with the public (and hopefully the movie studios see this and release titles), and those Sony fan boys know that the PS3 will catch on.. both formats will be around for quite some time, for the simple fact that you wont be able to get those Sony movies in any other format if nothing else.

Apr 17th 2006 2:05PM You could probably remove anyone who got a PS2 as there first DVD player as those who remember DIVX.. I guess that number is few..
