TUAW Retro Giveaway Part 1: Newtonian artifacts and the web in '96 {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Apr 2nd 2009 10:58AM One of my first websites was a page where I made free Newton Books available for download. I was using a shareware program to make the them so they were really just text documents. One day someone from Australia I'd never met out of the blue emailed me and told me he had bout me the official Newton Book program so I'd be able to make real books with links and other features. It was my first experience of the generosity of Internet strangers. And now that I'm in a better position in my life I try to be generous to people running small websites I enjoy.

AMBER Alert appmaker not happy with submission process {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Mar 10th 2009 10:39AM I actually disagree. If it is going to take a month for Apple to approve apps maybe there should be someone who at the beginning of the process looks at each submission an maybe separates them into three groups.

Group one would be apps that were serious, important, unique, interesting, fun, etc. These apps would add real value to the store if approved.

Group three would be apps that are already a dime a dozen in the store, are not well done, etc.

The second group would be apps that fall in the middle.

The apps then would be put in the submission queue in 1-2-3 group order with the first group getting approved faster than the third group. It might encourage better apps. And group three apps would still be getting approved in about the month it is taking now.

Rockefeller details DTV Delay Act: No guarantees this is the only one, stations can go all-digital before June {Engadget HD}

Jan 23rd 2009 7:27PM The previous administration's fault? The Democratic Congress passed the voucher bill with expiring coupons and not enough money to cover everyone. How could anyone in the Bush administration have messed that up? The bill was faulty from the start! Not supporting Bush on everything here, but blaming him for this is stupid.

The NetShare debacle: Apple, explain yourself {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Aug 5th 2008 4:41PM Yes it must be awful. Not unlike buying software for a device, like a PSP for example, and then having the company stop updating it so it is now incompatible with the product. And then having said company continue selling the product to new people knowing it no longer works. Not that they are sending registration numbers after you pay.

In other words, yes it sucks when a company takes your money and then won't respond to emails. Nullriver knows how it feels now that the shoe is on the other foot.

Poll: Do you utilize picture-in-picture functionality? {Engadget HD}

Jun 21st 2008 4:45PM On college football Saturdays I wear that feature out! Major news stories I sometimes use it to keep up with who has the latest. But other than that there really isn't much other use for PIP. So where else would you use it? I'm not criticizing the feature. Just curious where else you think it could be used usefully.

Kent County Council bans mosquito gadgets from buildings {Engadget}

Jun 16th 2008 10:22AM My wife and I are both 36. I can hear them perfectly fine. She can't hear a thing. I'm sure I'm not unique so you risk losing actual customers when these devices are used.

Mac users don't like people touching their stuff {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

May 31st 2008 10:27AM WHat is more likely is that Mac and Linux users are more representative of geeks and Windows users are more representative of the public at large. Geeks have more expensive gadgets than everyone else and might be more protective. To the general public a cool gadget is their $15 Wal-Mart universal remote. Of course they'll show that off more willingly!

EDGE and 3G and tripping down memory lane {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

May 30th 2008 5:06PM I don't see what the issue is here. EDGE is slower. We all know this. That's like complaining that dial-up is slower than broadband. You use the fastest access you have available. Sometimes that means it's slow.

Macworld offers up new rules for Mac buying {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

May 14th 2008 2:07PM I bought a Mac Pro earlier this year and had to deal with a Genius who didn't seem to want to sell it to me! My needs are way below power using. I create several websites and have to do some minor graphics editing. I wanted to run Windows but only to check my sites in IE. I also use it for iLife type of stuff. So a Mac Pro really is overkill. But I had the money and I love tinkering with my Macs. But this Genius, correctly I admit, was telling me I didn't need that much computer and suggested some other options. This is great I guess for most non-geeky customers. But I wish there was a password you could say to a Genius so they know you are a 15 + year Mac user who knows what he is doing and knows what he wants so they can turn off their newbie spiel.

Nullriver releases MediaLink for PS3 {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jan 8th 2008 11:19PM Be wary. This company produces PSPWare and has been ignoring its customers for some time - not just on updates and support but with processing registrations as well.
