The TUAW how-to guide to iPhone 3GS video recording and editing {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jun 28th 2009 11:11AM I'm surprised that there's no mention of rotation in this "review." I don't know about the experience of others, but mine has been frustrating. It seems that the iPhone can't decide which orientation to flag a video with.
The only orientation that consistently works is vertical. If I record a video horizontally, the resulting movie file is generally not tagged correctly -- meaning it plays vertically even though it was recorded horizontally. This even happens on the phone itself: record a movie horizontally and the phone thinks it should be vertical. No matter how you move the phone, the video is sideways.

AIM and BeejiveIM updated for push support {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jun 23rd 2009 2:09PM I'm really disappointed in the UI and bugginess of the AIM app.
-- The UI is very confusing. It needs the simplicity of iChat.
-- The text in IMs and the font size in the composition field is, what, 5pt? Holy crap, I need to enable zoom in accessibility settings.
-- It crashes. A lot. And when I relaunch, it's magically signed me in to a different account than the one I was using.
-- I get an IM while in the app. I close the app, and then 7 minutes later I get a push notification of the message I got previously while using the app. And vice versa.
-- You know where it says to publish your location? Well, I defy you to find that location for your buddies. Go ahead, try. I'll wait. ... see? After going through all the UI nonsense to find buddy info, you're presented with a location LINK rather than the actual location. And then, tapping it OPENS SAFARI and takes you to an AIM page that STILL doesn't tell you the location. C'mon AOL, even the most lackluster Twitter app will open a Google Map with a pin.
-- Not specific to AIM, but is there any way to change the volume of push notification sounds? Changing the ringer volume seems to have no effect at all.
-- Seems to me that push notification is NOT the way to go if you get a lot of IMs. It becomes rapidly annoying and unwieldy.

The Yahoo Messenger app is much more polished and easy to use. Now if only it would get Push and iChat integration...

Rumor: New iPhone pictures leaked? {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jun 4th 2009 4:13PM Another incorrect bit on that screen art: there's no Spotlight search icon to the left of the pagination dots. And what's happening up there next to the battery icon? If it's that vaunted percentage display, I'd tend to think that Apple's not gonna be showing that in product shots.

Rumor: New iPhone pictures leaked? {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jun 4th 2009 4:09PM Judging from the incorrect screen art, the off-center and too-large back logo and text, and the ridiculous slogan -- which sounds like the result of an non-English speaker feeding a few words into an online translation site -- it's not too difficult to call fake on this.
Still, I can't help but wonder what we're actually looking at, what with the unexplained cutout for headphones on the bottom and one other thing I haven't seen mentioned: the little port on the bottom right side, near the headphone jack.

iPhone 3.0 Firmware Antici... {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jun 4th 2009 10:31AM Sounds like this would be the AT&T carrier update that enables MMS for iPhones, a necessary step *before* 3.0 is released...

Bob Barker almost a no-show at Game Show Awards because of feud with Betty White {TV Squad}

May 31st 2009 4:27PM Sounds to me like Betty, who was to *present* an award, stepped back so that Bob, who was to *receive* a reward, would get his moment.
I prefer to assume that she was a classy lady to do so.

The Hitched or Ditched on-screen promo made me pitch a fit {TV Squad}

May 29th 2009 12:30PM Seriously -- this has been going on for at least the last 5 years, and on-screen promos even longer than that. And it hasn't bothered you until now? I can only assume this is why they keep doing it -- people are slow on the uptake.

Me? I got rid of cable last year partially because it was too difficult to freakin' watch anything through all the screen clutter. Now I watch shows on DVD from Netflix -- no promo clutter, no commercials, no fuzzy picture.

The next step is direct-to-dvd series production. I'll be first in line to buy a DVD set from Bryan Fuller if it means he can bypass the suits at a network and get it right into my eyeballs.

Leno ends his Tonight Show run tonight. Should we care? {TV Squad}

May 29th 2009 12:26PM If it wasn't Leno taking the 5-days-a-week slot it would have been reality shows. I don't watch either, so I don't really give a damn.
When Leno took over from Johnny Carson, he immediately alienated a huge segment of the audience from the get-go -- including me, and I'm not a 60-something senior watching before bed. Still, this is what NBC wanted, an influx of younger viewers from the Fox generation. I guess that demographic is now getting old and can't stay up until 11:30 these days, eh?
I may watch Conan's take on Tonight and have a feeling that Johnny might approve. But the TV will be off during the 10-11 hour.

From the "what took them so long" department -- AT&T myWireless Mobile {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

May 6th 2009 2:25PM Figures. Just a week after I bought the lackluster "Minutes" app that didn't even work properly. Caveat emptor.

Rumor Watch: Apple to buy Twitter {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

May 5th 2009 2:41PM Pundits trying to manipulate Apple's stock again.
