UK watchdog bans 'really fast' iPhone TV ads {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Nov 27th 2008 10:09AM Well, I'm sure that the iPhone isn't the first phone ad to show things "beyond realistic performance". Its an ad, I'm sure they wouldn't want to show the page taking 5 seconds to load or it taking 15-30 sec. to install an app in a 30 second commercial. Its ment to get you into the store, not to get you to buy it ASAP.
I'm sure allot of phone ads showing what it can do exatruate this too. Apple is just getting flack for it for two reasons: The iPhone is popular and their Apple (aka very large company, which usually makes you very open for negative criticism).
Example, RIMs ad for the BlackBerry Storm here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARf_e_sV31k, and HIC's ad for the Touch Diamond here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aZgRB3OstE. Maybe they both should be sued for the same reasons, such as showing some things loading instantly. Basically, I just think that the British Government is just blowing hot air in my opinion.
Insight testing 100Mbps high-speed internet in Kentucky {Engadget HD}
Nov 15th 2008 8:24AM Well, I live in the Northern part of Kentucky and I have their 20Mbps service, which ironically pulls 30Mbps most of the time but I am definitely not complaining, its still damn fast.
But I just wonder how their going to go over the DOCSIS limitation of 50Mbps? Maybe they will just continue a two-speed system like they have now (you can get rather 10Mbps or 20Mbps), I am sure they will have 50Mbps for current cable equipment and maybe 100Mbps requiring a new modem.
But my best guess here is that the 100Mbps is going to be for their Insight Business sector, which I am sure they do offer some fiber lines and whatnot.
Farewell FireWire? {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Oct 15th 2008 6:35PM I understand for some people where loss of FireWire might be a negative, especially for those who use audio and video editing equipment but in the mainstream industry, other than these certain things, the majority of devices are USB. Though I do think Apple should provide a USB-based FireWire adapter so people can continue using FireWire 400 devices.
But personally, I plan on getting the new MacBook either way, since I never had to use FireWire for anything. All my drives and equipment is USB based. Plus, the GPU alone is a good reason as the GMA X3100 literly can drag down the performance of OS X (I've used my brothers Mac and display Macs and compared it to my current 2.4GHz MacBook, My MacBook feels slow in comparason due to the X3100), much less any games your playing. So I am VERY glad they decided to finally ditch the GMA.
Atleast there's still FireWire on the MacBook Pro but its FireWire 800 (Though I heard there are simple adapter to connect a FireWire 400 device to a FireWire 800 port).
Apple schedules laptop event for Oct. 14; leaked photos abound {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Oct 9th 2008 4:04PM I'm waiting to see what they do with the MacBooks though buying my MacBook only afew months ago, it makes me wonder if I should sell my MacBook (early 08, 2.4GHz) when these come out or not. I guess it all depends on the specs because the design from the leaks look like an aluminum version of the same design they been using (kind of like what the AIr is).
Though I've been kind of wanting a MacBook Pro as well since I've realised I want to play afew games and whatnot on my MacBook and the GMA X3100 on it does a semi-OK job but I want the nVidia 8600M the Pro has.
Life With PlayStation is really live, really {PS3 Fanboy}
Sep 18th 2008 6:52AM I think they could of done abit more but it seems nice so far. However it only covers the "major" cities in the US. My city, Cincinnati, is of course no where to be seen in this >_
iPod classic refreshed, only comes in 120GB flavor now {Engadget}
Sep 10th 2008 9:57PM I'm glad I got the 160GB iPod when I did then (wanted it to store allot of movies, huge music collection, and some data, etc.). I understand wanting a thinner iPod but this is a downgrade discontinuing the 160GB. Personally, if I was Apple, I would add the 120 as a new option so people could have 80GB for $199, 120GB for $249, and 160GB for $299. (which ironically, those are all the correct prices). I was expected that they would have a 250GB to replace the 160GB.
So yea, I am very confused of why Apple would do this.
BlackBerry Bold hits Rogers on August 21st, so get your thumbs worked-out {Engadget Mobile}
Aug 19th 2008 6:49PM Figures since I just got a Pearl to replace my old RAZR which snapped at the hinge, I love it so far =3. Personally like it better than the Windows Mobile phone I got from work in several areas (which is a HTC Mogul). Like WM feels abit sluggish at times and seems to have allot of glitches (like the tap-keyboard disappears on the Mogul at times, and IE closes itself as well, and apps sometimes crash). Then again, all the "smart phones" have their flaws, BB and iPhone included.
Also, the iPhone is nice but is AT&T only here in the US unfortunately (I have Sprint). Then again, so is the Blackberry Bold....
Japanese Gov't: iPod nano batteries caused fires {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Aug 19th 2008 4:49PM Well, Apple, like most manufacturers gets their batteries from other manufacturers, and there was almost a pandemic of batteries bursting into fire on laptops, Dell and Apple's included. So this isn't exactly any one's fault since naturally, these were manufactured before the batteries defects were known.
However, I am sure this will make Apple issue something with these older nanos to prevent this from happening again.
Dell explains NVIDIA GPU issues, throws out BIOS updates to help {Engadget}
Jul 26th 2008 7:24AM I hope so, I work for a contractor for repairing Dell computers in my area and I've noticed a trend of most of the motherboards I replace in laptops (mainly Latitudes) having video issues (no video, lines in video, "corrupted" video, etc.) are usually the boards the nVidia GPUs. So first hand I know this nVidia GPU defect is affecting computers and I hope nVidia does something about it.
PS3 Fanboy review: Lost Planet: Extreme Condition {PS3 Fanboy}
Feb 29th 2008 10:04PM Not surprised, Capcom has a history of poor ports (such as the PC version of Resident Evil 4, which was just downright horrible) so I am not surprised this one was bad. I'm just surprised the PC version didn't get as bad off (which I will be getting the PC version here soon since its coming free with the Core 2 Quad I just bought).
But yea, this game just seems like another sloppy port that they didn't even bother optimizing. I rented the game on Xbox 360 and thought it was pretty good but didn't think it was great (its right around 8.0 material, more or less). But downgrading some of the effects was just sad, especially since the PS3 is capable of rendering those same effects, showing it was obviously a lazy shortcut.
I just wish developers would stop being so lazy and do better ports and especially optimizations for ALL the systems, especially the PS3, which has been a victim of this at times (which includes EA's port of Orange Box).
