Cable One makes some HD channels viewable only with CableCARD / STB {Engadget HD}

Nov 21st 2008 7:11AM This is a new development, programmers are starting to require their HD channels be scrambled before allowing carriage on cable systems. Example: Turner Networks requires that CNN-HD, TNT-HD, and TBS-HD be scrambled before they can be added to a lineup. Of course this requires a cable system to spend about $40,000 for controllers, scrambling equipment, and spend $400-500 on "advanced" cable boxes or Cablecards systems. Cable systems below 2000 customers can't justify this expense, which means they won't be able to carry these channels, causing them to lose customers to DirecTV and Dish, meaning the complete end to smaller cable operators. 80% of the actual cable systems in the US are small systems. Those who dislike the "cable monopoly" should be thrilled that there will soon be only satellite for television, two providers in lockstep price-wise. Progress.

Poll: With over 100 HD channels, are you switching to satellite? {Engadget HD}

Aug 4th 2008 5:41AM Most of these so-called "HD channels" have yet to show anything in actual HD on them, so it is pretty much all marketing-speak at the present time.

Popular Mechanics gets wise to HD compression {Engadget HD}

Jul 28th 2008 6:43AM This practice is common among programmers, dictating channel position (low or high resulting in discounts in the price), who they must be next to (Discovery HD Theater must be positioned next to National Geographic HD, ESPN must be next to ESPN2 and ESPN Classic), and other requirements.

Poll: Do you receive your local news in HD? {Engadget HD}

Jul 27th 2008 5:40AM Tulsa has one station doing local news in HD. None of the Oklahoma City stations are and no station in any other market in Oklahoma is. The only station that has said a word about doing HD newscasts is OETA, the statewide PBS network. They have plans to do HD local newscasts later this year ('08).

Verizon pushing FiOS internet to 50Mbps throughout US {Engadget HD}

Jun 19th 2008 5:59AM Using phrases like "throughout US" and "entire US footprint" gives the impression that FIOS is available everywhere. Then you get to the real truth with the phrase "16 FIOS-enabled states", which is only a little more than one quarter of the US. FIOS is still only available in a very small area, and always will be. This is a bit like AT&T touting 3G as being "nationwide" despite its not being available at all in 18 states and only working in 2-3 cities in the states in which it is available. Fiber is not expensive, it's actually very cheap these days, but the electronics necessary at the home or node are still very expensive and have not come down in price at all in recent years.

Ask Engadget HD: Is switching from cable to satellite worth it? {Engadget HD}

May 1st 2008 5:45AM If the 100 or so channels DirecTV and Dish are touting actually had HD programing on them it would be fine and worth the price, but it isn't right now. In reality, most of these do not and have never shown any actual HD programming, just "stretch-o-vision". Jurassic Park showed up on my DirecTV guide the other day on TNT, but it was just VERY bad stretched SD. I don't think CMT-HD and SpikeHD have ever shown a true HD program, they exist in name only. There are a few good 24/7 HD channels, maybe 4-5 excluding the premium networks. This number used to include Food and HGTV-HD feeds, but they have been reduced to 25% true HD when they went to simulcasting the analog feeds. Hopefully all this will change but it's going to take a long time.

Tulsa's NBC affiliate (KJRH) becomes first in Oklahoma with HD news {Engadget HD}

Feb 27th 2008 6:33AM I live in Oklahoma and like it here. It's cheap and the people are friendly, unlike on the coasts. In relation to the article, Kansas City station KMBC has been broadcasting in HD for quite some time now, and it is closer to Tulsa than Dallas. I guess the KJRH people don't know that.
